View Full Version : Can Magnets Damage Cell Phones?

I had a plastic swivel clip holding my cell on my belt, but it exposed the phone and as I walked one day, I hit up against something with my hip and scratched the phone. So, I see people wearing these types of cases:

I went and got one and I see that the flap is held snug by a strong magnet (I tested it, the magetic strip does cause metal to stick strongly to the inside..). Im wondering, and no one in the malls I asked could answer this; can the magnet damage the phone? I know magnets and computers are a no-no, so what do you think? Can the thing I bought to protect the phone actually harm it and defeat the purpose? Does anyone else use these and have anything to back up or disprove my concern? Thanks.

Why would a man who cares about his phone, allow it to rattle in his pockets agains keys and coins?

why would nobody have any common sense?

Here is what you do. You dont put the phone in your pocket, you clip it on the top of the pocket, but backwards so that the phone sits against your leg and the only thing exposed is the clip. That way the phone screen stays protected, and the phone isnt on your belt.

I think Im going to keep it out of the magnetic case for the day until I can get home. Id like to know if these cases can damage the phone though, and if so, why do they make them? Whos familiar with electromagnetic fields?

The tricky thing is finding a cell phone case without that huge rotating clip they all seem to have nowadays.

A magnet can damage a cell phone, if it were strong enough.

it could flash the ROM where all you rnumbers are stored and where the OS for the phone is located.

However, you would need a REALLY powerfull magnet. nothing you come into contact with on a daily basis would do it, unless you are an MRI repairman and someone switches it on while you are in there.

Take a 300 pound magnet and drop it onto a cel phone from a height of ten feet.

Proof that Magnets can damage cel phones.

God hates Magnets.

It utterly amazes me that there is not an iota of information on the entire internet regarding this subject. How can it be a universal understanding that a magnet can harm a floppy disk, but nothing exists that either supports or denys that magnets can harm electronics. Its stunning.

Here is another bit of bafflement with the internet; I bought a watch on eBay, a G-Shock watch, model # MTG950BDJ-9 Looks like this:

It has a metal band that is way too big, and there is nothing in the manual that says how to adjust it's size. Nothing online or on the Casio website or anywhere else on the internet has any sugegstions as how to make it fit a human proportioned wrist. Did I just buy a very expensive paperweight? Will I now have to pay a jewler to adjust this thing for me? I can basically get this thing on my thigh right now...

Why is it getting so hard to find stuff online anymore? Its like that Richard Bright thread, a famous guy dies and there is not an image of him on the net. WTF???

Thats a cool watch, Maybe after you get it sized we can catch the late show of back to the future at the cinema

The reason there is nothing on the 'net about the magnets is that no one has magnets strong enough to do the damage. you would need a very strong magnet VERY close to the inside of the cell phone

its a situation that just will not happen

and buy a real watch!

The one I wear is pre-Apollo! Older than me, and still running as accurate as any Japanese watch out there! Haven't even gotten a tune-up in over 7 years. What I spent on this watch over 15 years ago is already less than what I spent buying a Casio or Timex every 6 months.

And it makes a great impression. People who appreciate quality always comment!

But how do you adjust the band!

Take a jeweler's driver, or a fine tipped awl, and pop the link (or links) just before the clasp. Re-insert the new last link. Done.

Save the removed links in a safe place.

I did it! I figured it out by your description, and by the process of eliminiation too. It took a while, and supreme patience, but after taking out 2 on each side, I found it was too tight. So I added one, and it was slightly too lose. But I saw that I could adjust the buckle part, and got it perfect! I have changed regular watch bands before, and knew about the compressing pins thing (like the toilet paper tube holder thing). It was just a matter of getting them back together and thank goodness I have this micro screw driver set that made it all possible.
