One of the things I've been wanting to do for a while now is figure out what kind of lighting equipment I would need to take photos of things without the use of flash.

A good example is that I have things I want to take photos of but not have the reflection come back. I've also recently started selling things on ebay and even beyond that, I would like to be able take pictures of things so that they are well lit but not without getting a reflection back. I'll get whatever equipment I need, I just don't know what to look for or where to start. I've seen lighting umbrellas, white boards, etc that help enhance the item but I don't know which to get or if I need a special lamp. Any help is appreciated.

If your camera has a hot shoe or a jack to add an external flash, you could start with a flash that has a tilting head. You can either add a deflector (like in the pic), or bounce the flash off a low white ceiling.

You can also get something like a Quantaray MS-1 Wireless Flash Booster / Slave.

They cost 20 bucks at Ritz Camera. You can place several in different locations and angles. They don't connect to the camera. When your flash fires, it triggers these.

I've used them, and they work great. Also, you can tell people you own slaves.

That's a pretty good price. If you do a lot of selling it would be a good investment. I've found that the quality of the pic makes a huge difference. I've had items that were the same as what other people had, but mine sold for more because their pics sucked.
