Warning: The following post contains somewhat gross and shocking material about bodily functions. Go no further if you're squeamish.

On Thursday, my boss provided the office with a free lunch from one of our clients. This is normal; we usually get free lunch from this local italian restaurant once or twice a month.

I enjoyed some pizza and some chicken ceasar salad, and I went home. I had a sandwich for dinner, and then started surfing online.

Between 12midnight Thursday night/Friday morning and 7am Friday morning, I crapped about 7 or 8 times, I puked five times (twice the same time as crapping), and I passed out three times, once into a pool of my own puke. By the end of it, I was crapping something that was whitish or gray.

I had never experience food poisoning before, and trust me, after the experience I had, I never want to again. I have no doubt it was the chicken ceasar salad that caused it, but I dunno what else could have done it... most of the food I ate was pretty innocuous.

It wasn't pretty. I'm still not done all of the cleanup.

Not only that, right now, I'm drinking a weak gatorade/water mix, and ramen soup broth. Let the Robert Reed jokes commence.

Well first off....why didn't you go to the hospital? If I passed out in a pool of my own puke I would have called 911 myself.

Second, are you feeling better? I would take it easy for a few days. If you are gonna eat anything, soup soup soup and juice. Re-build up your fluids. Also you might want to take a one-a-day vitamin with each meal and rebuild up your nutrients.

I would love to drop 15 lbs in 2 days (not like that though)

Have you considered contacting the restaurant and letting them know the hell you went thru from them? Did anyone else from your office get sick too?

Feel better!

To be fair, Gatorade (and most sports/energy/vitamin drinks) is pretty shitty for you. Usually amped up in empty calories and sugars, ESPECIALLY high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which promotes obesity in pretty much anyone. You'll get the same result with plain ol' water with out all the retarded health consequences.

rehydration after vomiting or diahrea, some sodium, glucose, and
potassium are good (necessary) in whatever you drink (gatorade, chicken
soup, etc.). they replace lost electrolytes and help the gut uptake the
fluid- water follows the salt. but too much sugar in the drink can be
bad- it actually sucks the water out. i think the WHO recomends for
kids in africa with bad diarrhea to get a solution with something like
90mEq/L sodium, 20 of glucose, and 20 of potassium- but not just water.
i think gatorade has too much sugar and not enough salt, but they want
people to at least drink it.
Well, like you said, soup. Eat soup, drink water. Drinks like Gatorade ultimately often end up making you feel WORSE when sick or hungover. Gatorade truly only "works" as a "sports drink." It's meant for people working their asses off. Otherwise, you're just pumping your system up with shit that'll ultimately either make you feel like crap or, well, fat. Water, low sugar apple juice, low sugar orange juice, soup...you're MUCH better off with those options than Gatorade.

Forget Gatorade -- find Glaceau's Smartwater. It's water, but they pump it full of electrolytes. Kind of like Gatorade, without the bad taste and sugar. I think you can find it at Safeway, or sometimes at the local stop'n'rob marts. It'll keep you hydrated and restore the minerals and salts you've lost. Get well soon!

Check the Wiki link, HBox.

Breaking it down into the most basic terms as possible, HFCS doesn't fill us up nearly as much as "regular" sugar does. You end up filling yourself with excessive calories when your body isn't actually hungry. Obviously, willpower is the key here, but HFCS makes it a LOT harder, especially since it shows up in pretty much everything, including most healthy foods. It's used because it's much cheaper to produce and ship...but man, what a cost!

BUM-BUM-BUMMMMMMMM!!!

Here it is, and I don't agree with the fat tax idea in the article:

Biologically, the calories from sugar-sweetened beverages are fundamentally different in the body than those from food.

The
main sweetener in soda — high-fructose corn syrup — can increase fats
in the blood called triglycerides, which raises the risk of heart
problems, diabetes and other health woes.

This
sweetener also doesn’t spur production of insulin to make the body
“process” calories, nor does it spur leptin, a substance that tamps
down appetite, as other carbohydrates do, explained Dr. George Bray of
the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

“There’s
a lack of fullness or satiety. The brain just seems to add it on,” said
Dr. Louis Aronne, a Weill-Cornell Medical College doctor who is
president of the Obesity Society.

Two
studies by Penn State nutritionist Barbara Rolls illustrate this. One
gave 14 men lemonade, diet lemonade, water or no drink and then allowed
them to eat as much as they wanted at lunch. Food intake didn’t vary,
no matter what they drank.

The
second study gave 44 women water, diet soda, regular soda, orange
juice, milk or no drink before lunch. Total intake was 104 calories
greater for those given caloric beverages than those given diet soda,
water or no beverage. Caloric drinks didn’t help women feel any fuller
either.

Then there
is the “jelly bean study.” Purdue University researchers gave 15 men
and women 450 calories a day of either soda or jelly beans for a month,
then switched them for the next month and kept track of total
consumption. Candy eaters ate less food to compensate for the extra
calories. Soda drinkers did not.

[quote]Many studies of different types link sugary drinks and weight gain or
obesity. Some even show a “dose-response” relationship — as consumption
rises, so does weight.

Collectively, they meet many criteria for
proving cause and effect, Dr. William Dietz, director of nutrition at
the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wrote in an
editorial accompanying a study in February’s Journal of Pediatrics.

In
rebuttal, Adamson, the beverage industry spokesman, sees no such
consistency. He cites a 2004 Harvard study of more than 10,000 children
and teens. Consumption of sugar-added beverages was tied to body-mass
index gain in boys but not girls, a gender difference that warrants a
“jaundiced eye” to claims that soda is at fault, he said.

He
also points to a Harvard study finding no link between weight changes
and soda consumption among 1,345 North Dakota children ages 2 to 5 — a
group that arguably drinks far less soda than teens and adults.
_dap(250,300,'&PG=NBCMSH&AP=1089');
“Whatever
association there is doesn’t seem to be large,” said Richard Forshee,
deputy director of the Center for Food, Nutrition and Agriculture
Policy at the University of Maryland who has received research funding
from the beverage industry and global sugar producers.
As for soda being linked to poor eating patterns, “you don’t know which is cause and which is effect,” Drewnowski said.

People
who consume lots of fresh-squeezed juice, vegetables and fruits are
fundamentally not the same as those who subsist on colas and bologna
sandwiches, he contends.

“There
is a difference: The first group is rich,” Drewnowski said. He thinks
government subsidies of fruits and vegetables would be better public
policy than taxing a chea

is what they try to give all the kids in the hospital that are dehydrated (if
they can take fluids by mouth instead of IV.) usually it is considered
to taste sort of bad, so sometimes they mix it with apple juice. but
pedialyte is close to an ideal solution for rehydration.
