Do you know the scientific explaination for the strange odor that urine gets after you eat asparagus? I have been wondering this for years.

If you take "FRESH" asparagus, steam it until slightly teder, and serve it in a butter sause, it can be VERY good! I think a lot of you dislike this veggie because of the way it was first presented to you. Canned and over boiled ANYTHING is gonna suck! Except canned Niblets Corn! KICK ASS!

TAZZ1376 - That's a good question becasue although the "aroma" is present, not everyone can detect this smell.

The smell comes because asparagus has an amino acid in it called methionine. During the digestion process, the body breaks this down into methyl mercaptan. This is what you smell when you urinate.

You must have the gene to smell this mercaptan to smell this. I don't know if the gene has any other purpose. For some reason decoding the asphaagas pee smelling gene isn't the top priority of the genom project.
