I just bagged a new Les Paul today from Victors Music in Paramus. I usually play Fenders, but I fell in love with it as soon as I picked it up. It's heavy as hell, but sounds great. I know there are quite a few musicians on the board, and was just curious what you play or prefer.

i have a Squire 'made in japan' which is my first guitar and a Fender Strat... I added a seymour duncan hot rail to accompany the two single lace sensor pickups "at the advice of a friend"... to be honest it didn't make much difference.

i'd love to get a Les Paul, one reason is the sustaining humbuckers, and i played a friends LP once and there was great action on it... maybe an SG

i've seen the Parker Fly and it looks like it leaves alot of room to get to the higher frets pretty easy on it

Personally, I play a washburn, so I would love either a fender or a
gibson. Still, that les paul you have there is a thing of beauty. Enjoy
it and know many of us are jealous.

Fenders.

But 2nd up would def be Gibson, Tho I'm toying around with the idea of picking up a PRS-

Definately Gibson, the necks on Fenders are too narrow and my chubby little fingers get all scrunched up. As for thinking of getting a PRS, I think I would need a better job to afford one.

I was a Fender man all the way, playing nothing but Teles and Strats until I picked up an SG a year or so ago.

I love it to death and it's become my favorite guitar.

Next on my list is a Schecter.

<sup />

To the question of Gibson or Fender, the best answer is "both".

Throwing out the cliches here, the differences between a Les Paul and a Strat are so striking thats its almost an apples to oranges comparison. Strats and Les Pauls are both screwdrivers, its just Strats are phillips heads and LPs are flat heads

In my opinion,

For a power sound nothing beats a Les Paul. I played along side a singer who played a Les Paul special into a Marshall 30th Anniversary custom. I've never heard more presence in a setup than that combo.

I see strats superior for lighter rock and dirty blues (think Stevie Ray Vaughn). Its not a power sound, its a fat sound. It has a round feeling to it. (I know these adjectives dont make much sense) Put a fender strat in the neck position and dirty up the channel
with some overdrive or distortion and thats the sound I'm talking about. After getting deep into SRV I decided to buy a strat. After trying out a least a dozen different varieties I converged on the SRV signature. Its an amazing guitar, but Id never play hard rock or something heavier with it. Just blues.

The funny thing is, my guitar of choice (and I have sig pick with it) is an Ibanez RG570. Its made of bass wood which is the crappiest wood for guitars. BUT for some weird cosmic reason it matches my technique very well and I love it. To handle tuning changes at gigs I bought a second and now I have an 1989 model and a 2000 model =).

I have to admit it took me quite some time to get used to the feel
of a Gibson after playing Fenders exclusively for almost 20
years. The odd thing is I prefer the sound of a Gibson and used
to modify my Strats and Teles by outfitting them with humbuckers.
For some reason I never tried an Ibanez but that might be a good call.

While
we're at it, let's all just admit that this thread is just an excuse
for us to post pictures of our dream guitars.

i am of the opinion that the guitar does not make the man and that the man makes the guitar. you can have a plain o'l acoustic laying around and if you have the ability to make that thing sing "which many but not all people can do" then you really have something to be proud of...

and i am defenitely not saying I am that guy but i've witnessed it many a time by playing with very good guitar players over the years. in our most recently failed project our lead guitarist played gibsons and ibanez's. a couple times he rehearsed with my Squire and thought it felt and sounded great. I have another buddy who has the most beat up acoustic you could find, but he makes it sound great by his playing...

There's a lot of truth to what you say, Funk. But as the great
Albert Collilns used to say, "A guitar player's tone is his face."

While a capable player can make anything he uses sound great,
getting exactly the right tone does take some searching. I'm a
"plug in and play" kinda guy, with the only pedal I ever use being a
TS-9, and I even use that sparingly. Without a gaggle of effects,
making the guitar sound exactly how I want it to requires the proper
equipment.

Rarely can effects make a bad player sound good. Rather they give the player more tools to work with.

Personally I use effects sparingly as well (although I don't consider distortion an "effect") even though as a product of the late 80s my signal chain is an ADA MP1 preamp into an Alesis Quadraverb into a Behringer UltraEFX into a Marshall monobloc 200W power amp into a Marshall 1960A straight 4x12. I generally run with 3 channels (clean, dirty, and distorted) and just use a Crybaby Wah between my guitar and pre-amp. Even when I don't use the wah, I like how it loads down the guitar a little bit.

I do like the sound of Les Pauls, but I could never get comfortable playing them - unless I'm playing real heavy stuff, my right-hand style is more in the Lindsey Buckingham style - plucked/finger picking/pseudo-picking (I use the edge of my thumb).

My main guitar right now is an American Standard White Blonde Telecaster w/ maple neck. Never thought I would own one, but something made me try this one and I was hooked. Because of the finish, this uses a light (swampash) ash body that makes it much lighter than other Teles. Also has a great natural (unplugged) sound.

My other electric I use quite a bit is an Ibanez RT650 - early 90's. Ibanez seems to have forgotten they made this model. Was their shot at a Strat killer. Has a thicker neck 24-fret than other Ibanez, mother-of-toilet seat binding and pickguard on an alder body with a book-matched maple top, locking tuners, graphite nut, HSH pickups with coil taps. This guitar is amazingly consistent, so much so, that it has been borrowed for dozens of recordings because you know it is going to sound the same from session to session, saving studio time trying to match sounds.

tele7
03-19-2006, 06:57 PM
I find the same to be true Paul. I was actually in the market for a Relic Telecaster, but could not justify 2500 bucks for another tele. Other than a 78 gibson (the paul) I don't own a real les paul, so, what the hell. I went for it. After playing only fender, it takes getting used to. It's kind of uncomfortable, heavy and can't really see the fingerboard while playing it. With that said, it fills a niche that was missing in my collection.

PaulF
03-19-2006, 07:50 PM

I'm also the type to look for something different from the other guitars I own. I still have my first electric, which was a BC Rich Warlock, an Ovation shallow electic/acoustic with a maple top (instead of the usual spruce), a standard Stratocaster which was given to me to replace the HM Strat that my friend sold for drugs, and enough parts for a couple of Strat style guitars from a run of about a dozen I built for some friends and other acquaintances about 12 years ago.

I've also owned over the years: a first year Fender Jazzmaster (really bad condition, but sold it to Jim Mouradian), a BC Rich Sea Gull built for Dick Wagner (from Alice Cooper - I found out it was stolen from him and made attempts to get it back to him - don't think it ever did. I had bought it at a store in Boston), my HM Strat - one of the early American made ones, a couple of Dean and Washburn Destroyer/V style guitars. Some really cheap Yamaha acoustics.

Still on my wish list is a really good nylon-string classical guitar and, yes I would like to add a Gibson to the list, but more likely a double-cutaway Junior.

Bobo, What is that thing behind the guitar to the right? Looks like something from a "Jug" band ?

It's called a Morin Khuur (MOO rin HOOR), it's the National Instrument of Mongolia, The Chinese call it a Ma To Qin (MAH Toe CHEEN) which translates to "Horse Head Fiddle." It's basically a 2 string cello. I paid less than $800 for my American - though I'm friendly with the store owner and he always hooks me up.

I've got a couple of Epiphones, which I guess puts me on the Gibson
side. One's a black Les Paul Standard, which I like a lot, but I also
picked up a LP 100 as a backup and found I like it better sometimes.
It's a Les Paul shape with a thinner body, like an SG. The tone's a bit
edgier and it plays pretty well, eventhough it's fairly cheap ($250).

I've
been thinking about getting a Tele, but I think I need a new guitar amp
next. Looking into a Traynor - anyone used one of these things?
