I was walking yesterday morning, about 7 am on a Sunday. I walked about 6 miles and was a mile and a half away from my house and walking on grass when I stepped in a depression and twisted my ankle painfully. I had no phone, money or access to any other help, so I decided to walk back home. Hobble is more like it. As I was walking back, I saw a shopping cart and thought maybe I could use the cart to help make the walk back a little easier, but I decided against it for fear that Id look like a bum. I made it home and for whatever reason, decided to take a hot bath because my body ached. I know now that it wasnt the best idea! I have twisted my ankle many times before too, so Im kind of used to it. In fact, I was walking on the grass to strengthen my legs.
So now, I have it wrapped in an Ace bandage and Im resting it. Im told its pretty common, so does anyone else want to share any horror storys? I was there when Sexy Bastard broke his ankle at the game, and know that others on here have also had leg injurys..
Is it really true that once its been sprained a few times, that your always prone to injury? Has anyone had surgery to correct it?

I once sprained my ankle very badly in high school. It was one of the last days of school, I was in Gym and we were playing basketball. I twisted it so bad I had to be carried to the nurses office. I wanted to go home but I had a final the next period. I could have rescheduled the final, there was one more day of school where I had that period scheduled and could have taken it. So before calling my mom my friends carry me to my next class so I can ask the teacher if I can reschedule it. This fat, rotten cunt says no. I'm fucking carried in there, unable to walk, and this selfish whale says no. So I'm just left there waiting a half hour until the period starts. Because I can't take it early, and then go back to the nurse and call my mom and leave. Oh hell no, this bulbous emperor who teaches fucking Microsoft Word and Excel for a living can't handle that. So I have to wait to take the final. So I finally finish the final, go back to the nurse, call my Mom, and she isn't home. I find out later she was home about 45 minutes before I called, but then went out to the store. So I have to walk to my bus, like a fucking gimp, in agonizing pain, IN THE POURING FUCKING RAIN. And then walk all the way home from my bus stop. My ankle didn't heal fully for months. I almost slipped and fell on the walk home. And then I find out why she didn't reschedule: that lazy cunt didn't show up for the next class. If I ever see that bitch again I'll piss in her face.
used to get bad sprains playing basketball coming down off somebody's foot. all i know is it was fucking agony when it would first happen, i'd see stars. my ankle looked like half a softball and took weeks to heal up. after a bad car accident it took 4 months for my sprained ankle to heal up.

Yowch!

Mines not black and blue (yet) but its swollen and I was able to drive and get to work today. It wont stop me from walking as an excercise once the pain goes away either. Id like to know if anyone had any operations that can stop it from happeneing or if they are really effective, or if Im better off just trying to strengthen them without surgery..

Besides having my toes broken for various reasons ((competitive kickboxing back when I was a bit younger did it often)) my worst foot injury was running off one of the docks at a lake in the Poconos and having my foot land right on a spikey rock. I couldn't walk for about a week, which sucks when you're in the mountains and just want to run around ((especially since I was a wee bink back in those days))

If you sprained it in the same way as the diagram you posted, I feel for you. I did that in high school (jumped to try and slap the top of the canopy in the bus lane, and landed with just the big toe side of my foot on the concrete). My foot folded under, and within 10 minutes my ankle was bigger than my calf.

Worse part was, just when I was about to be able to give up the crutches, I put one of the crutches on a piece of paper on the floor, by accident, and the crutch flew out from under me. I landed on the crooked foot, and re-injured it the same damn way.

OUCH!!!

Are there any special sneakers or shoes that are designed to prevent this from happening?

Are there any special sneakers or shoes that are designed to prevent this from happening?

I have really bad ankles from multiple dislocations, I had an orthopedic surgeon tell me to always wear hiking boots or heavily padded sneakers that come past the ankle for support. I have had good luck w/ New Balance & Rockport. Recently I have lapsed into wearing cheap velcro sneakers from Payless which don't cover the ankle but sorta cradle it. In the summer I don't wear shoes at all.
