Bastards!!! Now, they are taxing shoes and clothes. Next up will be food!

I worked for the state for 5 years. They have no problem whatsoever with spending your tax dollars. The salaries that are earned in state-related jobs are obscene. I saw people earning obscene salaries and these people did literally nothing.

The USA is probably five years away for riots/protests like they are currently having in France.

Like many people, I work harder and longer--and get taxed more and more--and then get raped at the gasoline pump.
NJ politicians have an electorate (booty-call) that never
complains. In fact, we ask for a bigger reaming every election
year.

Relax and enjoy it NJ, The more you struggle, the more it hurts.

Property taxes go up.

No they aren't. He's increasing rebates.

This state is in a horrible financial mess. This stuff is neccessary. And it's not like he's just rasing taxes and then spending money like a madman.

To cover the rebates and rising state expenses, the Corzine
administration says it needed to raise taxes and fees by $1.8 billion
and cut $2 billion from state spending.

Corzine's biggest spending decisions, however, reverse years of shaky financial practices by his predecessors.

He wants to pay $735 million into the state's debt-plagued public
employee pension system, the largest payment by any governor in years.
Corzine also plans to repay $300 million to the Unemployment Insurance
Fund, money that had been raided to balance earlier budgets and put the
state in danger of being forced to raise payroll taxes.

Still, the Corzine administration cut back. Nearly every department had
its budget reduced. The Department of Transportation and the Department
of State lead with nearly 17 percent of their budgets cut.

Corzine's budget will call for job cuts through layoffs and
attrition of non-union employees, Abelow said. It reduces support
for state universities and colleges by $169 million to less than
$2 billion. Aid to cities and most schools will be little
changed, other than payments for employee pensions and increased
aid for building new schools in the state's poorest districts.

Face it, this was going to happen. People wonder why President Bush cuts taxes and increases spending andraises our federal debt to ridiculous levels. Because when somebody tries to do the right thing, everybody flips out. This is the uncomfortable truth of the position this state is in. Whoever was Governor would do something similar. Unless they lived in denial, like Bush.

Although it is probably bad message board etiquette to quote yourself I'm doing it here and will keep doing it whenever I spot a thread blaming those "Tax & Spend Democrats" for decisions forced on them by their "Borrow & Spend Republicans" predecessors, particularly in NJ. Here's what I said in January:

Although I don't live in NJ and theoretically shouldn't care, I never like to miss an opportunity to throw Christie Todd Whitman, or at least her reputation, under the bus. Here's why: in 1997, faced with a budget shortfall caused by both her proposed tax cuts and big payments to the the public employees pension systems, she decided (rather than dropping the tax cuts or negotiating less generous contacts with the unions) that she was feeling lucky and borrowed like $2.5 billion at about 7.5% and then turned it over to her buds on Wall St. to invest. Her theory was that the stock market would earn enough to pay off the loans (and Wall St.'s fees) and also fully fund the pension system without having to raise taxes. It worked for two years, then not so much, and NJ's taxpayers have been making up for it ever since.

I realize this isn't a Goldman Sachs message board so if what I wrote above doesn't mean anything to you think of it this way - she decided to earn her rent by using her credit cards to buy scratch-off lottery tickets. And this has been standard practice for the Borrow & Spend wing of the Republicans ever since. And what our buddy W has done on the national level for the past five years makes Whitman's antics look like stealing a candy bar from Wal-Mart in comparison.

Should you care? if you're old enough or rich enough, probably not. You'll either be dead or can take care of yourself as the fiscal government shit hits the fan (taxes & interest rates up, money for schools, hospitals, roads down). If you're neither of those things you probably should care because it is your future and future prospects that are being pissed away.

End of lecture.
[/QUOTE]
If you folks in NJ (or anywhere really) want the pressure for tax increases to abate, you have to expect fewer services and elect politicians who are willing to accept nasty political fights with municipal workers' unions (& possible strikes) as a cost of getting there. Frankly, I think Corzine (like Bloomberg in NYC) represents the best chance to clean up the mess in NJ (to the extent it is fixable). Both guys were extraordinarily successful in growing financial businesses to the point they became models for the market segments and made both themselves and their backers very rich. If they use their talents in the same way in the public sector we'll see significant improvements. Bloomberg has had some success already and I suspect Corzine will as well. I'm willing to bet that both of them have dreams of being President in the intermediate future, so I think both are going to work pretty hard fixing their local books as further resume builders since the country as a whole is going to have to wake up from the Bush delirium and start fixing the national problems as well.

End of second lecture.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the tax dollars collected went to helpful and necessary improvements for the citizens of the state?

I'm begging all of you: please don't be so naive and degenerate this into a "Republican vs. Democrat" argument. The amount of wasteful spending on both sides is criminal, and if you don't think hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars are thrown to corporations and friends with no show jobs because your man is a member of a certain party, you are living in a fantasy world.
