What a talent. First Don Adams, now Paul Dana. I thought he was kinda old for driving race cars. What an inspiration to all aspiring 80 year olds who want to be on the IRL circuit. Tough.

Now that I've seen the video... I'm not sure what to think.

For those of you unaware of how auto racing works, each driver has a spotter who tells him where the accidents are, to slow down, and to go "high or low". Also, the track is equipped with warning lights to tell the drivers that there's a problem on the track and to slow to "caution speed".

I counted - there was approximately 6 seconds between the start of Carpenter's accident and Dana's impact. Plenty of time to alert the driver.

Now, Dana apparently PASSED two drivers who slowed to caution speed - and then plowed into the car.

Later on, in the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Bristol, Michael Waltrip got into an accident because he thought the spotter told him "Turn 1" instead of "Turn 4".

So this leads me to several things.

1) Why didn't Dana slow down? The warning lights on the track were functioning even if...

2) His communications weren't working ..

3) Spotter fucked up and told him the wrong location. Even so, Dana should have slowed down.

more than once today they have complained about having tech difficulties with the headsets and frequency.

as sick as this may sound, if you watch the wreck in slow mo - you can see he almost missed him. he hit the back of his car - another second or two and he would've slid by. tragic.

They were saying on ESPN this morning that his spotter told him to go low, which was correct when the car first hit the wall, but the car that had hit the wall rolled down towards the infield. When you're going 200mph I'm not sure if there was enough time to for him to readjust to go high.

At that speed, a slight tug on the wheel changes your angle/vector dramatically. Same physics apply in "bump drafting".

He was going WAY too fast - he passed two cars. Something's not right here.

Sheepy - IRL is Indy Racing League.

Maybe it was just a tragic accident. The kind that happen in a dangerous sport.

Why does SOMEONE have to be blamed everytime? Sometimes, shit happens.

One of the theorized reasons Dale Earnhardt died is because he wasn't wearing the HANS safety device, which protects your head-and-neck in front-impact situations.

Indy Racing IS dangerous - but something like this shouldn't happen in a freakin' PRACTICE.

Anyone have a link to the video?

As for the accident, Dana was a writer who started racing late in life. This isn't the first time a new driver has screwed up by not slowing down during a caution.

Thanks Tenbats. Horrible crash. I'm surprised they pulled the other two drivers from tomorrow's race. Race teams don't normally do that. Their first response is usually, "he would want us to go on".
