I sat through Wagner's Das Rheingold? last night.

2 1/2 HOURS of no intermission torture. Old fart next to me started snoring in Act 4, so I don't feel bad for my opinion.

Hate to be cliche, but I'll stick with the Italians.

Does this post strike anyone?

Closest I ever came was seeing "A Chorus Line" on Broadway. Fucking awful. Theatre is fucking gay. I went to the bathroom and just stood in there avoiding the show. I went at least twice a half hour at a clip.

Opera, and theater in general, literally puts me to sleep. However (and I know this isn't the Confessional Forum, but I'm going to put myself out there), I enjoyed Les Miserable when I saw it on Broadway and am looking forward to the limitted engagement that is being planned. Let the gay jokes fly.

Been to several operas at the Met in NYC. Used to live right down the block from there so it was easy to go to.

Personally, I loved it. The productions were incredibly staged and elaborate. The music was OK but the whole experience was well worth it.

My mom was a mezzo-soprano/contralto and sang many times at the Met. Kudos to you for hanging in there for Rheingold.

Wagner's ring cycle is really intnse but it's what most people
think of when they think of the ladies with horned hats and huge
knockers.

Italians wrote the best opera imo.

I saw "La Boheme" at the Met a few years ago. I greatly enjoyed it. The subtitles helped.

My mom was a Soprano, so I was digging Corelli and Caruso since childhood. I've also worked in the business, and I'm proud to say that I've supplied my friend Teresa Stratas some great country music tapes. I saw The Ring Cycle a while back, not the best for beginners. I suggest something romantic and Italian, perhaps some Puccini for starters.

I saw Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte back in high school.

I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it.

I suggest the City Opera at Lincoln Center...it's cheaper than it's bigger sister and you can go casual.

I saw Carmen there a few years back...a great starter Opera. All the music is familiar and you can catch some rising stars.

I was engaged to someone who worked as a stage manager in opera, so I saw enough to know that (for the most part) it wasn't for me - somewhere between ballet and musical theatre. But I did see enough to know the differences between good and bad operas - the ones that were good ("Carmen" with Denyse Graves and "Pagliacci" with Placido Domingo) were really outstanding experiences. The ones that were bad really did make me want to poke my eardrums out. I really would love to see "The Ring Cycle" live at some point in my life, just because of the obnoxious length of it all - kind of like "because it's there."
