What were you doing?

PS... I was faking being sick when the Pope was shot, when Anwar Sadat was assassinated, and the day after John Lennon was shot. I think that's why I won't let my kid get away with faking it.

I was in 6th grade. One of the teachers in my school HATED Reagan, and would often go off on speeches about how he was ruining the country. When Reagan was shot, I blured out "That should make Mr Brenner happy!" And he just gave me a look like he wanted to shoot me right then and there. .

I remember being glued to the t.v. - i was in 8th grade at the time, and for some reason i think we had snow day, but that may have been when Air Florida crashed. There was the briefest of moments I remember when they actually reported on all the networks that James Brady had died - ABC news correspondant, Frank Reynolds, was furious on the air when he found they reported false information: "Let's get it NAILED DOWN...somebody...let's find out! Let's get it straight so we can report this thing accurately!"

They then went to a commercial, and when they returned Ted Koppel was suddenly sitting next to Reynolds, sort of as a calming influence. I remember more, tho, the freaked out/sick feeling of the news announcing that James Brady was dead, and the lingering thoughts that the President of the United States might actually be dead too.

Reynolds was the co-anchor of World News Tonight, but when he died of cancer a couple of years later Jennings became the sole anchor.

Lennon getting shot was a huge cultural touchstone - and here in D.C. the Air Florida crash - and of course several years later with the Space Shuttle. I don't remember much about where I was or what my reaction was to the Pope getting shot, but I do remember noticing that the one-two assaults on the Pope and Reagan (less than 2 months apart) really changed forever the accessibility of world leaders with the public.

Oddly, maybe even more memorable for a lot of us was Eddie Murphys "Buckwheat's been shot" segments on SNL.

I was 45 days from being born, which again reminds me I will be 25 in 6 weeks
My grandparents had taken my brother and me to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. (My parents were in Philadelphia for the Final Four in which Isiah Thomas' Indiana Hoosiers beat James Worthy's UNC Tarheels for the NCAA title that same night.) Some lady had heard on the radio that Reagan was shot so they put on a TV for us to watch the news.

Funny thing is, there was a fire in the Metro that day. I think it even killed one or more people, but they hardly talked about it, because of all the spectacular live rescue coverage of Air Florida.
