I bringing this guy home tomorrow:

His current name is Diesel which I really don't like. The people at the SPCA said it isn't that hard to rename him. They said just to use his new name all the time and especially when feeding him or giving him treats. They said it should only take a few days for him to respond to his new name. Has anyone ever done this? Do you have any tips?

Get him a PIMPED OUT water dish with his new name on it. Everytime he uses it, he'll read it and get the hint.

By the by, what are you changing his name to? Unleaded?

First of all, very cool of you to get a shelter dog. So many good pets available, so few homes.

I dont think you need any special tips to get him to know his name. Just do like they said and give it a few weeks. The first few days will likely be a big adjustment for him, and after that he should be ready to learn the routine in his new digs. You'll be fine. Dogs are very adaptable, within a month he'll sit, sit up, roll over and play dead by you contacting him by mental telepathy. OK, thats bullshit. But he'll still be fine.

I have talked about my pooch in numerous threads, but here it necessitates repeating.

We rescued "Jessie" by way of Friends of Animals. She was scooped up 1 day from the chambers of death at Paterson Pound. Lived in a Vet's office for a few weeks. Then was on display at Petco, where FOA tries to find homes for these poor creatures every Saturday.

The wife BEGGED me! "OOHH, isn't she cute Oh look, she is giving me kisses!! Well, she got the dog, and I got a Best Friend!

Marge still calls her Jessie after 10 years!

To wrap it up, her name was Jessie, we named her KC!

It's easy to change the dog's name. I did it with mine. His name was Lil' Pup, and we changed it to Buddy. The key is to start by using his old name and new name together for a couple of days. Then just start dropping the use of the first name.

Buddy figured it out in about 2 or 3 days. During this process, make sure you don't use any of the standard nicknames that people eventually use (sweetie, pup, pooch, etc.). You can call him dumb-ass AFTER he's used to his new name.

PS... When he barks I call him Barky Barkerson.

we got two cats recently from the shelter, they'd already been named pete and lucy. we always meant to rename them but it never really happened. on the other hand, our dog we got from the shelter and they had temporarily named her something stupid at shelter, so we changed that and it worked really well.
I renamed my dog when I brought her home back in August of '04 ... she was about 5-6 years old ((no one really knows for sure)). The shelter had her named as "Melody" which I HATED. I always wanted a dog named Lucky... basically whenever you pet your dog, just keep calling it by the name that you want it to have. Now, Lucky comes whenever she's called, wherever she is in the house. I know its been suggested to have a name with two sylablles ((sp)) because the dog responds better to it ((heard it from vets and shelter folk))... good luck with the new dogga :o)
Well, he already seems to be responding to his new name, Hunter. Or maybe it's just the sound of my voice he's getting used to. But we've had a great day together.

Why have posts where I quote something, been coming out without my response? This is pissing me off. It did it the other night when I tried to post in the "what's your dip" topic.

did someone say puppy?

her name is Rosey but she answers to half a dozen nicknames. like other commands, i think they respond to tone of voice more than the words, so changing a name shouldn't be too hard. a smart dog will know you're talking to it. a dumb wouldn't know it's name anyway.

it's a win-win.

names (rover, echo, buddy, scooby, skippy, etc.) if you go with more
sylables than that it is hard fo them to remember their name...

just
