Depending on what study you choose to believe or with which doctor
you consult or whatever diet book you read, there are literally
hundreds of different schools of thought on what a "healthy diet"
actually consists of. Low carb, low fat, complex carbs,
etc. Who the hell can make sense of it all?

Now
that I'm getting a bit older I really want to make an effort to eat
right and keep my weight in check, but I have no idea what the hell I'm
supposed to do. I truly dislike most vegetables, too. I'll
eat salad, but it pretty much ends there. I can't force myself to
eat broccoli, spinach, asparagus, or any other supposedly healthy food
that tastes like a bag of yard work.

I always feel
great and lose tons of weight when I go on the Atkins, but it
inevitably ends in going on a sugar binge for weeks. Anyone know
of a sensible way to eat for the rest of my life where I don't have to
give up the things I like and don't have to incorporate the things I
hate?

I lost a great deal with this, and kept it off for years. Basically, its a hormonal diet and its the same kind of diet a person with diabetes would be on. So, it limits your ability to over produce insulin, so you end up burning your fat in a fire of fat. Youll have a lot of energy, have a heatlier heart and vascular system. I was on this diet before I became a meter reader and when I started reading meters and walking 10 miles a day, I was full of energy and able to do it with ease. I shunned sweets of all kinds, except fruits. I ate meat, fruits and vegetables and avoided breads, pasta and rice. Fruit will become your cake!

I’ve read a bunch of books on the subject. The best I have come across so far is Tom Venuto’s “Burn the fat build the muscle”. It’s not a diet book. It is motivational. He delves into the subconscious. How to get into the routine of working out, and change bad eating habits.

Vegetables don’t have to taste bland. There are varieties of ways to spice them up. There is no way around it, if you want to eat healthy you have to incorporate vegetables into your diet.

you probably have an idea of whats "healthy" and not healthy so starting out small like cutting out sugary snacks from your diet always helps get the ball rollling. When I started my diet I started out by cutting out the sugar and drinking water and even that made me feel a lot better. I always read the nutrition lables on everything I eat, I look at the Calories, The Serving Sizes, the fat content, the sodium, the carbs....yadda yadda yadda. The main thing to remember is portion control, it goes a long way. I have the super foods book and I use it as a guideline as to what I should mainly have in my diet every day, it helped me a lot while shopping for food. and im babbling....im gonna go to work now.

I really think the issue here is that you aren't eating a well balanced diet. The fact that you think eating certain foods will make you "gay" is absurd as well.

Yogurt has never made anyone gay. Putting it on your face, that's another story...

What's wrong with broccoli? There's nothing wrong with it if you eat it cold. I just eat the leaves and throw out the stumps... too thick and crunchy... yuck

I always feel great and lose tons of weight when I go on the Atkins

I was on Atkins a while back and lost 12 lbs in a month. Then I started to develop sharp pains on my right side. I went to the doctor and I told him I was on Atkins. Turns out I was having trouble with my gallbladder because of the diet.

The best "diet" I ever went on was a low fat diet. I lowered my fat intake to just 10%-15% of my diet. I wasn't really trying to lose weight; just trying to eat healthier. I lost weight gradually and felt great.

They gotta include those in some books, I suppose, for those who want to get deeper into it, but, simplifying greatly...

Glycemic index/loads are about how much sugar someone is dumping into their bodies at a given time. Sugars are cabrs, and there are simple sugars which the body sucks up with no effort, and there are more complex sugars that make the body work a bit to break down.

Breaking down the sugars the get them out of your blood and into your cells is what the pancreas is doing when it squirts out insulin in response to eating sugar. Foods with high glycemic indexes can make the pancreas oversecrete insulin, so your liver gets bombarded, and long story short, the liver takes this as a signal to release more fats, in the form of triglycerides, into the blood, making muscle cells insulin resistant [bad] and overloading fat cells, with fatty acids attacking the pancreas insulin producing cells [real bad] causing insulin levels to drop, and blood sugar to spike, hence the diabetic cycle.

Weight wise, the excess sugars are eventually turned into fat, and the fat cells already in you won't be released while the body is in this state, you dont burn fat while secreting insulin when we gorge on sugary foods, and especially sugary foods with the simple sugars that are essentially, metabolic poisons.

Ack, too long, and I'll be 'corrected' soon I'm sure, hopefully not Torrance-Style.
