Both blue rings are associated with small moons; Saturn with Enceladus and Uranus with Mab.

"The outer ring of Saturn is blue and has Enceladus right smack at its brightest spot, and Uranus is strikingly similar, with its blue ring right on top of Mab's orbit," said Imke de Pater, professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley.

The color of Saturn's blue ring has been credited to the tiny particles spewed into space by Enceladus as it orbits around the planet. But the same probably isn't true for Uranus, scientists say.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12188326/

Wow, I'm such an astro-nerd I knew what the thrad was about before clicking on it.

No pie charts, sorry, but a cool discovery.

More important in science these days is the discovery of a species that made the transition from water to land; filling in a gap in the fossil record:

=

Scientists have made one of the most important fossil finds in history: a missing link between fish and land animals, showing how creatures first walked out of the water and on to dry land more than 375m years ago.

Palaeontologists have said that the find, a crocodile-like animal called the Tiktaalik roseae and described today in the journal Nature, could become an icon of evolution in action - like Archaeopteryx, the famous fossil that bridged the gap between reptiles and birds.

A huge huge find...

Linky Linkerton

Leave it to Mike!!!

I actually enjoy this sort of topic. Not on a fanatical level as some, but still quite interseting!

I can't even watch DISC, ot TLC until the boys are safely tucked away. But when I get a taste, I'm up past midnight!

Thanks for the link MT! I'll meet you in the BJ thread later.

*edit* I think my son, Sean looked through your scope 5 years ago on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights! *edit*

Any one else remember when they first discovered that Uranus had rings... and the talking heads on the news all started calling the planet "Ur'-u-nus" because they couldn't bring themselves to say "Ur-A'-nus"?
