I saw this guy on Bill Maher's show last night, whatever the fuck it's called, and I have to say I really, really like the cut of his jib. What he had to say about Iraq was frank, and logical; he has a great sense of the religious issues that were facing in this country today, calling out the fundametalist religious crackpots on the right, but also acknowledging that there are lefty elitists that look down their noses at anyone who professes faith in any higher power. "There are intelligent people who pray," he said when Maher and Affleck were starting to get into GeeDub praying over shit, although Biden did say that Bush just going on his instincts and prayer was scary. He also told a great story about a conversation he had with a Democratic colleaugue on the Hill saying that Biden's mother praying the Rosary for her dead brother every Sunday at mass was "quaint." Biden's reply was something along the lines of if we weren't in the Senate I would "tear your Goddamn Adam's apple out." How can you not love that?

He talked a little shit about Hillary, which is always a plus in my book, said some great, great stuff about the environment, has, or at least seems to have, strong ideas of imbuing a sense of civic pride and duty back into the American people, which is sorely lacking these days. He seems similar to a John McCain, perhaps a little more liberal, but the same kind of straight-shooter style.

He is running for President in '08, and I think I could get behind him. My question is this: there are peope here that are a lot more plugged into the whole Washington scene than I. I know my stance on issues, but I just would like a little more of this guy's background. I know he's on the Judiciary Committee and head of the Drug Committee or whatever it's called, amongst others. So I'm opening it up to you political minded RF.net'ers. Is this fellah the real deal or is it just more bullshit and posturing? Right and left, let me know.

He has always come off as fake and phony to me. I have no actual proof to back this up, it's just my personal perception of him. He has come up with some really corny shit during Sente hearings, obviously trying to play to the camera and get air time. Don't like his theatrics.

But Maher did have a point about one thing. Biden is accused of rambling, but he gives the long, detailed answers that questions deserve.

I think it's honest in a "grew up in a Philly suburb" kinda way. It can sound like he's talking tough in a boastful way, but I don't doubt he'd back it up with action if he had too. He wears his heart on his sleeve, as they say, but it's genuine. Not like that fat phony pickled-pig's head, Ted Kennedy.

He ran in the primaries like 16 or 20 years ago, but had to drop out after some plagiarism scandal. I'm too young to really remember, but I have a feeling his speeches sounded too much like JFK for some people. If not for that he might have been a real contender, way better than Dukakis.

So basically, he's better than anyone from Massatwoshits, as is everyone from Delaware.

I've actually come across a couple of plagiarism deals. One was he ripped some stuff off from British Labor party Leader in the 80's Neil Kinnock. But he'd used the same lines before and credited them in other speeches. Apparently he just forgot in this particular speech or something. The Dukakis staffer that exposed it was kicked off the campaign by Dukakis, so that seems okay.

The other was in law school. This wasn't straight plagiarism, he just mis-cited some things in a paper he wrote during his first year. He was exonerated by both Syracuse Law, and I guess, Delaware's Bar Association.

When the genius Mark Levin figures out how to become a senator, then he can talk.

I like Biden, always have. He's a sensible moderate and slow and steady progressive. I find I agree with him alot, but even when I dont, I respect his opinion. Though H-Box does have a fair gripe about the grandstanding, but thats just how a high profile senator becomes high profile. No one remembers much that Pat Leahy says in those committees. And Pat Leahy doesn't have the name recognition to even consider a run for Pres. Biden does.

My perfect ticket for 08, McCain-Biden. With McCain serving one term and passing the baton to Biden.

BTW-Has one of the better hair plug jobs in Washington, so that right there gets my vote.

I can't forgive him for the Bankruptcy Bill

Here's a fairly comprehensive look at his voting record.

That bankruptcy bill pissed me off royally too. I really wonder if he wasn't a Senator for the home state of MBNA whether he would have voted differently.

He's also Ranking Member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He's been in the Senate since 1973 so he's gotten a lot of experience over the years and has risen to fairly senior-level status in terms of party rank and committee leadership -- plagarism episode notwithstanding.

What a different world that was, where a "plagerism" scandal could derail a presidential bid. Even Gary Hart's "Monkey Business" seems tame compared to what has gone on IN the White House in the past two presidencies.

It seems clear he's running again. Alot of people on the Left have doubts that Hillary's electable, and many of the primary voters (who tend to be more hard core on both sides) dont trust her for her consistent support of the Iraq war, as well as her more recent "turn" to the middle. I agree with assessment that Hillary wont win. She scores very low in things like charm, likeability or seeming "presidential" in any way. And if you think elections are won on policy wonk position papers, you're wrong.

Clinton won.

Also, when Rudy Giulliani ran for NYC Mayor the first time against David Dinkins, another woman I worked with actually said she was voting for Dinkins because "I think it would be neat to have a black Mayor". Dinkins won that election.

Since Kennedy, and TV, they say whoever has the best hair usually wins Presidential elections. There'll be a woman President some day, but I think she'll be more like Margaret Thatcher or Condelezza Rice rather than Hillary.

Biden will be 66 in 2008 so age may be against him. His hair is 21 however.

The thing about Hillary is that Bill will be out there all over the fucking place on the stump for her. She'll get a shitload of votes on his name and face alone. If anything's been proven about the voters in the last, say, 20 years it's that yes, they will fall for it.
Many voters seem to vote only party line or for reasons mentioned above. As Hillary tries to gather speed, she has told Bill to not say anything unless he clears it with her and the staff. She is one of the most transparent phonies around today. I am listening to Biden since he at least thinks most things through and seems to be able to maintain a stance that one can respect .

He is more over the top with this stuff than any politician I've seen. Some of the stuff he pulls is so bad I actually cringe when I see it. It's simply an emotional response, and I don't vote based on that.
