Is it a sub or a wedge. I'm from Westchester NY originally, and we always called it a "Meatball Wedge".

I live in Central Jersey now and got made fun of today at work for ordering a "Meatball Wedge". Apparently they call it a "Meatball Sub", which I have never heard before. They have never heard anyone call it a wedge. IS IT A WEDGE OR A SUB?

Us simple folks in the midwest would mistake a wedge for cheese.
Wedge? I never heard of it. North Jersey here, and usually I just say sandwhich, although everyone in a while I'll throw in 'hero'.

I'm also from Westchester and have always called it a wedge. I recently moved to Brooklyn and went to the local deli to get some sammiches. I asked for a turkey wedge and the kid was looking at me all confused, he just didn't understand what i wanted. i thought it was me. he actually asked me, "so you want me to cut out a wedge of turkey breast for you?" So now I have to try and remember to call it a sub or hero. I actually was going to start the same type of thread after that.

There's no such thing as a "long sandwich". We all learned from Dave that sandwiches are made from Wonderbread. Wonderbread isn't long.

Oh, and.... sub.

I had never heard of a wedge until I moved up to New Rochelle for college. At first I thought a wedge was the round roll, so I just said "gimme a meatball hero on a long roll" and the guy said "a wedge"? And I said no because I thought he meant the round roll. Then I got my sammidge on a round roll.

I always just called it a hero, although I've gotten into the habit of calling it a sub if I'm at Subway.

I call it a 'Hero' majority of the time especially when it's hot.

Occasionally Ill call it a 'Sub' but only when it is cold.

Cousins in PA call it 'Hoagie' which makes me cringe.

I've never heard of 'Grinder' until I read it here.

A 'Wedge' when referring to a sandwhich should mean part of the sandwhich not the whole. So to me, a 'Wedge' is inbetween a slice and 'Hero/Sub'.

I looked it up after everyone in NJ made fun of me for calling it a wedge, and it is apparently Westchester-only. No where else in the country do they call it a wedge. I have no idea why. I actually took a camera phone picture of the menu board at the deli I go to in Westchester to prove it to the NJ ppl.

And you either get a sandwich on a WEDGE or ROLL.

I'm originally from Long Island where I only asked for a hero. I remember old ladies would use the term "sub". Four yrs ago, I moved to Westchester with my buddy who opened an Italian Deli (Sansotta Bros in Cortlandt Manor) and was forced to name his hero's wedges. The first time I saw wedge listed, I figured it was some pita type of thing. Wedges are definately upper class. Heros are more blue-collar.

A little history lesson:

The original "hoagie" is what is now referred to as an "Italian Hoagie" which includes a variety of traditional Italian luncheon meats: dry salami, mortadella, capicolla, provolone, etc... served with lettuce, tomato and onions with a light vinegar and oil dressing.

The Philadelphia Almanac and Citizen's Manual says that “the Centennial made popular the “hokey-pokey man,” a street vendor selling ices, sandwiches, sausages, fresh bread, “zoologicals” (Philadelphia baker Walter G. Wilson’s animal crackers), and small antipasto salad. When Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta “H.M.S. Pinafore” opened [in Philadelphia] in 1879, bakeries produced a long loaf called the pinafore. Entrepreneurial “hokey-pokey men” sliced the loaf in half, stuffed it with antipasto salad, and sold the world’s first hoagie.”

Professor Domenic Vitiello, professor of Urban Studies at the University of Pennsylvania offers a different explanation of the word's origins: "Italians used to work at the old Navy Yard [in Philadelphia] where they would grab meat, cheese, and lettuce and put it between two slices of bread. The location of the Navy Yard was called Hog Island, so the sandwich eventually became known as the 'Hog Island' sandwich; hence, the 'hoagie'."

According to one reference[3], many older, Italian-descended, South Philadelphia residents, said that the real origin of the word "hoagie" arose in the late 19th-early 20th century, when there was a term "on the hoke" that was used to denote someone who was down-and-out. The word "hoke" may have been derived from a Scottish term, "howk," meaning "rummaging around." Men who were "on the hoke" would ask deli owners for handouts, who would put together scraps and off-cuts of their cheeses and meats and offer them in an Italian roll. The sandwich was known as a "hokie." The Italian immigrants, who spoke a slurred type of English, pronounced it as "hoagie."

Neither, it's a grinder. I can go for a nice meatball parm grinder right now. That sounds great.

Then of course, I move to the Hartford area, where everyone calls it a grinder. I cannot, and will not, call it that. Fuckers.
