Good stuff. I liked the Scalia joke.

Colbert's was better than most, but not the best one I've seen. Imus had a cringe fest with Clinton a few years ago. That was both brutal and hilarious.

thanks for the heads up deep throat
Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando. (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_TV_COLBERT_IN_IRAQ?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)
Stephen Colbert will broadcast four shows next week from Baghdad, where he says he'll be "Bob Hoping" it for the troops.
Colbert arrived at the former Al Faw Palace at Camp Victory on Friday. For weeks, he's promoted the trip on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," but because the military urged caution, he has only trumpeted a vague trip to "the Persian Gulf."
The series of shows, each to be taped in front of an audience of about 450 troops, have been dubbed "Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando." It's the first time anyone has broadcast from Iraq for a USO tour.
Though Colbert has often infused his mock pundit character into real events - the 2008 election, the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association dinner - his Iraq trip isn't a parody.
Both the character Colbert (silent "t") and the real Colbert (pronounced "t"), a Catholic family man, are ardent supporters of the troops. He has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Fund (a charity that assists injured service members and their families), and he's a board member of DonorsChoose.org, which is raising money for the education of children of parents in the military.
"Sometimes my character and I agree," Colbert said in an interview at his Manhattan office before leaving for Baghdad. "My character and I both know the Apostles' Creed and my character and I both think it's a shame that we're not talking about the troops anymore."
Give Colbert some credit for doing something very cool for those in combat.

I've always liked Stephen Colbert. I was really impressed with his testimony in front of the congressional hearings. I'm sure the Republicans expected a clown show. My favorite part (and I'm paraphrasing) is when he said, "I want to speak for those who have no voice."
We wish we could go to the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear but us poor people have to work.

The December 8 Colbert Report is one for the time capsule. It revolves around the rube revolt following Steve Martin's recent 92nd St. Y discussion pushing his recent book about art that Ron was going on about during Wednesday's R&F show. It is simply fucking genius. Although my favorite Colbert moment will probably always be his in your face speech at that Bush dinner for the sheer ballsiness of it, this show might be Colbert's finest combination of brains, edginess, gall and, most importantly, funny ever.
Even if you only like modern art a little bit - Do not miss this episode. If Ron saw it expect a long discussion of it on Thursday's show.

What I love about his Bush dinner speech is the OVERWHELMING disapproval of it by the "mainstream media" . Gee, wonder why? Maybe because he told them that they were "stenographers" for the Bush White house. "Write it down , put it in spell check, and GO HOME!!!"

'Colbert Report' off air; Comedy Central mum (http://news.yahoo.com/colbert-report-off-air-comedy-central-mum-173858178.html)
NEW YORK (AP) — Comedy Central's "Colbert Report" is off the air and it's a mystery why.
An expected new episode of the show was replaced by a repeat on Wednesday. Comedy Central said Thursday's live show will be off, too.
The network said it was airing the repeats "due to unforeseen circumstances," but offered no other explanation. A person close to the show, who wasn't authorized to speak publically on the matter, told The Associated Press that new episodes are expected to return soon.
Hopefully it's either a stunt or technical issue, and not a health issue.

Colbert's mother seriously ill, report sources close to the show
Multiple outlets have cited a family illness as the cause of the suspension of "The Colbert Report," and now a person who has a business relationship with the show has told Huffington Post that the host's mother is seriously ill, and the show will remain suspended until he can return.

Damn. She was 44 when he was born. That's pretty old for a mother in the 1960's.

"Gohmert" is listed in Urban Dictionary as
Gohmert
verb: to say something that is obviously and patently untrue to the point of stupidity, then when called upon to provide concrete evidence of the assertion, to flounder about angrily while shouting about the integrity of the questioner.

Colbert under fire about this tweet which as been deleted
“I’m willing to show the #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever.”
Colbert stated that he didn't compose the tweet but theres already a hashtag #CancelColbert
The tweet was offensive but can we stop calling for firings? This is the shit Sharpton pulls.

To provide context the tweet was in reference to the Washington Redskins starting a charity for Native Americans and apparently Ching-Chong Ding-Dong is a character Colbert has used on the show.

The tweet was a quote from the show, so it's funny that Colbert is saying he didn't write the tweet. Although perhaps he knows better than to throw out that quote without the context of the greater bit.

That was a nice gesture by the Redskins' Hebe owner.

I feel like in any discussion of this you have to make a preface. I found the Colbert bit funny and understood the parody OR satire of it.
Now, having said that. The clash here is ironic. I dont believe that everyone doing the #Firecolbert thing seriously wants him fired. It's just that the medium they're given is so limiting they know they're not going to get any attention with a long, complex discussion of what respect you owe people racially or what responsibility people have to suspend their own feelings of insult. They are going to the most extreme expression to maximize impact, much like Colbert in making his point about the Redskins used the most extreme language and ludicrous stereotypes available to him. It's really the same thing.
In the old days the relationship between TV and audience was so simple. The entertainer makes a product and the more audience he accrues the better for him. So it's in his best interest to please the audience, and the audience expresses their displeasure by turning off the show. But the relationship has become much more insidious. Media needs you to now promote and participate via social media. Their very impersonal product wants to infiltrate your life in a personal way by coopting your social media expressions and monetizing your friends list. I believe that on a subconscious level people resent the inequity here and thats why you get such extreme reactions. Your personal time is being exploited to an extent like never before.
So then Colbert goes and does his bit and now all of a sudden you have these Asian people saying "woah, you know I really am repulsed by this language and stereotype because man I've had to deal with racism and discrimination. There's a perception that I'm a safer race to make fun of and I dont think I'm cool with that." Then these people are dropped right in the intersection of this media equity imbalance. Thats what this whole thing is really about. Media figures dont just want you watching, they covet your thoughts. You have to be the broadcast channel now and they dont want you choosing what you broadcast.
I find the defensiveness of performers so telling. And I havent heard Colbert say it but so many of them do say "you're not really offended, you dont really think that." I think we're offended on a much more profound level than we understand and these fissures are just where it seeps out.
