I've been listening to R&F since they came to XM...not a long time, but I really love the show.

But the show itself escapes definition for me and I've wondered why that is. I feel like I could tell somebody what the O&A thing was in the same way I could describe an episode of the Sopranos. But I could not, with any accuracy, really tell anyone unfamiliar with Ron and Fez what makes it tick. I don't know exactly what it would be that I would point at to say "that" is what the show is all about. The specialness of the show stays with the show.

Anyway, as I've continued to listen, I've gradually started to think of Ron as a kind of enlightened being. This isn't to sissify him or to make him something he's not - or to make him superhuman or to paint a haolo over his head. Just that the way he seems to live his life is kind of in the enlightened tradition of being as I understand it. And that that's where I get a lot of satisfaction from as it's deeply enjoyable to listen to someone who knows what's going on in a big time way - and naturally too without any special effort or having gone to "enlightenment camp". It doesn't matter if he smokes and drinks or curses or whatever. It just sort of has to do with the he moves through the world:

1. Ron has no fear of death. He states this from time to time, but more than that, it feels like he doesn't.

2. Ron always unearths the flimsy cardboard quality of the "important fact" and has a zen-master-like way of laughing at the phoney thing we all have a great time worshipping. Ron shows us that life is an illusion.

3. Live for the moment. Ron has a deep, but very simple appreciation of being alive. And he's alive always in the right now. This isn't like he's jumping around going "I'm alive! I'm alive!". He's just very open to the moment by moment and he doesn't want to be anywhere else. For example - O&A and Jimmy often talk about what poor listeners they are. When they're not listening, they're finetuning a joke or preparing for some next coming thing. Ron, on the other hand, seems to just soak everything in and react without much thought. You always know that he's fully attuned to what people are saying and feeling and doing. Not in a hypercritical way - just attuned. This is why he can seem like a genius - cuz he soaks it all in and then just gives an automatic response. These automatic responses are so natural and unaffected they have the feeling of being just exactly the right thing to say.

Wow this is getting too long. I wanted to talk about how Fezzie is the perfect foil for this, cuz he's deeply involved in the Dream nature of reality, laden down with worries, burdened with the rest of us and suffering suffering all the time. They're pairing is really beautiful because on one hand they are very close and there's a lot of love between them, and on the other they are separated by the thin wall of fog that Ronnie has passed through. Most of us are there with Fezzie taking life way too serious and filled with worries...it's nice to have Ronnie on the other side, telling us how nice it is to just drop all that and sit down and smoke a nice cigar and enjoy the company.

Anyway...that's how the show is for me.

Sleeves - are you sure you're a new listener? Sounds like you really "get" the show. It's the uniqueness of the Ron and Fez show that inspires such a rabidly loyal audience like everyone here, and you pretty much nailed a lot of the "deeper" aspects of the show as well as the hosts themselves. Welcome aboard!

And yes, Ronnie is truly a sage.

Thanks for the warm welcome, buddays!

"Enlightened" is a loaded word and its hard to unload it. But Fonzie and Mr. Miyagi were definitely on the path.

Enlightened doesn't mean that you sit around and do good deeds or chant or meditate all day with a bunch of magic beads in your pocket. You can ride motorcycles and smoke and do what you like. It just means you are in touch with what is essential about life and being alive and you dig it.

Wax on, wax off...

I heard that one time, Ron was trapped in the reference section of the New York Public Library during a global ecological mega-disaster (much like in the movie The Day After Tomorrow). There was nothing to eat so he ate dictionaries and thesauruses by the dozens. Days past and he ate and ate. Eventually he passed out from the lack of nutrition and cigars.

When the rescuers found him, he was passed out near a pool of his own sick. One of the rescuers looked down and saw that Ron's puke contained partially digested pages of books. The rescuer looked closer and saw that the patchwork of individual words seemed somehow familiar:

Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd:
But thy eternal Summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long Pipe-wrench the preventable shoe whoring, hambone.

Later that night, Ron shit a complete replica of the unabridged Gaelic text of Beowulf and sighed, "Ahhh, Grendel-y!"

Since this is my first post:

Ron and Fez are the Greatest Radio Show Ever!!!!!

Ronnie is hilarious and scary insightful into people and their goofiness.

He's not perfect, though. His political takes are pedestrian. Not terrible, just not as painfully hilarious as his one-on-one interaction.

In the East people go wandering around looking for their guru - the guru is someone or something that helps you on the path to self-discovery - and self-discovery is really just the removal of certain ideas that you have about yourself, rather than discovering that you're this or that. Human Gurus use all kinds of different methods. Some use riddles (as in Zen), some don't say anything, some will point out your weakness, some your strength. The goal is to realize that all the thoughts you have about yourself, like "I am handsome, I am funny, I am a good golfer, I am the President, I have a fat stomach, I'm like Clint Eastwood"...whatever way you think you are, your personality, is just made up. You made it up. It doesn't mean that it's not valid. It just means that who you really are is a bit different that what you thought.

Ron is always pointing out the plastic quality of personality. It's hard to see it like that, but one of the things he makes fun of is how seriously people take their own sense of themselves. He plays with that constantly.

Some gurus don't know they're gurus and some enlightened people don't know they're enlightened. I see Ron as a kind of guru who enlightens like an older brother. He points out your weakness, but without mean spiritness (which might not be like an older brother). He may curse and yell, but there is always absurdity at the root, rather than judgment or anger. I think if I spent two minutes with Ron, he'd bust me for something that was central to my own troubles on the path. Like he'd figure out that I think I'm real smart or that I'm too serious or arrogant - and he'd make a joke that would show me that.

Anyway...Ron doesn't need to think of himself as an enlightened being or a guru. He's just where he's at and its a powerful place.

Sleeves wrote:

VERY WELL PUT, THAT WAS AWESOME, YOU REALLY SAID A MOUTH FULL. I GET WHAT YOUR SAYING>

Yesterday our buds talked for a little bit about "LOVE" and what it is and why we can't define it.

One of the quickly brought out things was the idea of what Ronnie calls crazy love - where you love someone and hate them, sometimes it seems in the same moment. In the continuing vein of this thread, a spiritual-philosopher type (and I'm not describing myself, only what I've read) would simply point out, of course - any time you have hot, you will have cold. We live in a world of polarities where things that we call good (like winning the lottery) will always have a bad part to them. Build a house, eventually it falls down. You can't have one without the other.

One strange thing is that spiritual masters don't really think that what we regular street people think of as love is love. They wouldn't say that we don't have or experience love, but that when we talk about it we're kind of pointing in the wrong direction. What we street people call love is really just a complex mash of feelings, like attraction, interest, lust - all of which are fine but really just constitute a feeling state, which is bound to be transitory. Anything transitory, anything impermanent, is not Real, so says the sage.

We often think that we like certain things, like sex, or playing sports, because of the level of pleasure they bring. You might think you like Ron & Fez cause it's a funny show. But isn't it also that when you listen you're deeply rooted to something? Your attention is fixed on the present moment by moment. That fixation is a type of prescence and that prescence, I would say, is actually why you tune into the show.

It's the same for sports, sex, drinking, drugs, deviant behavior, hang gliding - anything that allows you to become present into the moment by moment. The trick and the problem for us people in the world is that it's very hard to notice that it's not the pleasure part of the experience that is the draw, but the experience of being present. It's easy to notice the "boom goes the dynamite" part of sex - but hard to notice the living moment quality of it.

Spiritual masters say that love and happiness are not experiences of feeling or emotion, but of state. Of being. Being in the state of being is love and happiness. And that's why all the Lennon-esque lyrics and all the weird stuff on that Dr. Bronner soap always seem a little odd to us - like "Love is real, Love is all" - because we think of love in our lowercase kind of way and associate more with the pleasant feeling side of what's going on inside us when we're in love than in the state of being side. But we experience that too.

All you need is Love...
