From http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/63508.htm

May 9, 2006 -- HOWARD Stern says he's been offered a "major deal" to come back to regular radio via satellite radio - just like his longtime enemies Opie & Anthony.

"The joke could be on them if I get good and worked up [because] I got offered a major deal to go back to terrestrial and stay on satellite at the same time," Stern told his Sirius listeners in comments replayed and mocked yesterday by "O&A."

"Can you imagine if I go across town against them in all those markets and just kick some a-? That would really be cool," said Stern, who now broadcasts to about a tenth of his former audience.

If an offer was actually made to Stern, it most likely came from Citadel Broadcasting, which is in the process of acquiring Disney/ABC's radio division - including New York's WABC, WPLJ and WEPN - and is headed by former Infinity/CBS exec Farid Suleman.

Once Suleman gets the keys to ABC's outlets, he could instantly return Stern to major FM stations in New York, L.A., Chicago and other huge cities, if Sirius, which is paying $500 million over five years for Stern's supposedly exclusive services, agrees to trade exclusivity for cash.

During a recent investor conference call, CEO Mel Karmazin said he's not entertaining reverse-licensing offers but added, "It doesn't mean that we couldn't in the future."

Neither Stern's agent or Suleman returned calls seeking comment.

Where does it say he "wants" to be back?

Why are all the crappiest shows getting to be on both satellite AND "regular" radio, and yet R&F are relegated to a midday shift and terrible replay times on only XM?

Life ain't fair, dammit.

I find it most frustrating since they'd fit back into the WJFK line up so goddamn easily if their XM show is rebroadcast. Either air it live middays or a taped show in the evening slot. Anything to get that awful hack Jay Severin off the air.

Ideally, R&F get a deal that lets them be on free radio as well, and if they keep the midday timeslot, meh, so be it. I think it blows, but it's their call. Then Peter Rosenberg hopefully gets Severin's evening spot. I think I may be Peter's only fan on the board, but I really like his show. I think middays work best for him since he gets the lead in from the Junkies and the two shows run together well. Plus, if R&F got the evening slot, they'd be getting the people commuting home from work on the west coast.

In the end, I just want them getting a simulcast deal, period, no matter what the time slot.

I never really had a chance to hear Rosenberg's show but since he's a local product I'll wish him well.

Since I actually heard the broadcast, I might as well fill you in on what the article left out. Stern said he had no interest in doing it at all. He loves not dealing with the FCC or PD's telling him what he can say. He said it wouldn't be worth any amount of money. He also said I couldn't imagine screwing over all the people who followed him over to Sirius and put there trust in him.

More self-obsessed drivel. I bet Howie has an audio loop in his house
with Peter Griffin in Family Guy saying "Howard Stern Howard Stern
Bababooey" over and over all day, and he just jerks it to his own name.
What a fag.
yes, he is. he is also a dick. did anyone catch O&A talk abour the differences with XM and sirius? they said (and i am parapharsing) that XM doesnt concentrate on just their show. it would be nice but they would settle on just the 57th street offices concentrating on them, or just giving them 1 channel.

look guys, i hate stern as much as the next guy but everyone is forgetting some very simple stuff here. This is business, if it makes sense for Howard there's no reason for him not to jump back to regular radio in a simulcast deal. Alot of you people saying this has no chance of happening (which it certainly does, from several companies) were the same people who said O&A would NEVER go back. You can't be blind to shit like this, stop taking O&A's word or Howard's word as gospel truth. All of this radio industry is based on one thing, money. If they can find a way to make it work, trust me Howard will be back.

The only reason he isn't taking the deal is because the market will be smaller than O&A's. I'm sure he would have loved to be on Free FM if he could be guaranteed more stations in large markets.
For those of us who actually listen to HS, we know this story is 100 percent, unadulterated BS. It's akin to the way journalism now works, where the story always has the question mark at the end of it. "Stern back to Terrestrial Radio?" It allows the journalist to say, I wasn't SAYING he is going to do it, just that it's possible. If you listened this AM, or for the last 5 months for that matter, Howard has said that people on terrestrial radio are OFFERING him the chance to come back and he's said NO. In fact, if you look at the CBS filing against Stern, there is constant discussion about how Howard's work with Sirius would be "exclusive" starting in January 2006. This is the classic move made by conservative radio (follow me on this one). They "report" rumors/innuendo, half-truths that start out in the muckier parts of the journalistic pool and then say .. we report, you decide. Here, Stern says, I've been offered these opportunities and have NO interest in them. So the reporters take the first part and ignore the second. It's even more laughable with regard to Citadel, since Fareed Suliman, who runs Citadel, is a known enemy of Stern and was the first company to pull him prior to leaving in December. I must also call BS on you Dave. Stern's "dick" as you put it is as big, if not bigger, than ever. He's STILL the most talked about personality on talk radio. Every article about Sirius OR XM includes a comment about how Howard came over on January and on and on (for the most recent example, check out the Forbes article about yet another law firm lining up to get a class action suit going against XM and Hugh Panero). Every discussion of morning "free" radio talks about attempting to fill his shoes, every article about Sirius talks about how it's gaining on XM in subscription, beat XM in quarterly new sign ups, all attributed to Howard, and XM's decline is discussed in conjunction with the Stern move. . SIRIUS has football, basketball, college basketball, hockey, english premier league soccer

1) You get major college football on XM, and no one's listening to NFL on sundays anyway (theyre watching it)

2) You also get major college basketball on XM

3) The NHL is also on XM

4) No one cares about soccer, and XM has the World Cup anyway

Howard Stern is obviously responsible for all of Sirius' subscriptions, even the ones started before he announced he was leaving FM. Until then, he was reponsible for the sale and daily use of all FM radios. In fact, his "audience of 14 million" account for 100% of the national radio-listening public, because the other 286 million Americans don't listen to anything in the morning.

I love Howard. I followed him to Sirius but before i bought it, i looked into what other stations they had, I love there rock stations. theres never a bad song on. and the sports stations kick ass. Like the other guy said, I love RnF but Sirius to me, offers more and they should go to Sirius when they can. It would be a great move for them. OnA just whine constantly and they coudnt hold Howards jock. They wish they had even half his audience.

But XM had 2 mill listeners when O&A came in, now they have 7.3 million. that means... OMG O&A BROUGHT IN 5 MILLION LISTENERS!

You douches.

Enjoy the stern show all you want if you can still stomach that egomaniac, but at least be openminded.

I feel bad Mainelli got canned. You hate to see anyone lose a job or money. That being said, the Post had just cause in firing him. If they didn't he could just sue their asses off. If anyone here has taken any journalism classes, you would know what a piece of crap that article was. Not once did he try to get a quote from the other side of the story. He just wrote an internet gossip piece. They must have also asked him about who his clients are and found a conflict of interest that would have made the POST look like shit. Especially after their scandal at Page 6 and how they mercilessly bashed the Times after Jason Blair. He was being an O and A crony and paid the price. By the way Stern has offered proof of every part of the article being false. He said to quote this" Returning to terrestrial radio would be a betrayal to my core audience and an admission of failure, I would retire first". " I've have never been happier in my career or more pumped up to come to work everyday, I was miserable being shackled by the FCC". His web site said his traffic is up 12% this year and can prove it. Yahoo said he is one of the top 10 searched celebs(his girlfriend is #4). Who is a lemming? At least try to listen to BOTH sides of the story. I heard Mainelli on O and A this morning, what a bitter guy.

Since when does someone writing for the Post need ANY journalistic integrity or facts to back up their columns??? He just reported a rumor he read in Inside Radio, which is a credible, legitimate radio news source. If they can get rid of him for reporting rumors, then I guess they'll eliminate Page Six too?

It is another example of Stern being a hypocrite. He has lost all the credibility he built up over the decade or so that he did great radio.

I can't believe that there are peolple out there that think that Sirius is better than XM. I've had both and Sirius licked balls. The DJ's on the music channels are fuckin phonies. The units are pieces of shit that get crap reception. And to top it all the monthly sub is more money.

When I first got my Sirius unit I was pumped to hear Maxim radio, but the first day listening I knew I would be giving my Sirius away to somebody I didn't like. What a bunch of shit. Nothing original at all. I actually didn't hang on until Howie came over because I had discoverd Ron and Fez and I would rather listen to a bunch of losers like Opie,Anthony and Jimmy(at least they operate within the realm of possibility and make me laugh sometimes) than listen to a delusional old queen like Howard. And Bubba's show should be a good enough reason not to buy Sirius on its own. I can't wait for the day that Sirius falls on its face and disappears from the scene.

As Doc said, I don't see any different between the two platforms with the exception of equipment and niche programming choices. I've heard the rock is better on Sirius, and I'm a big NFL fan, but I'm more than happy with XM's baseball choices and college football selection. Also, with the Rangers being out of radio range for me, it makes listening to the games a lot easier.

But different strokes...

My only reason for having XM is Ron & Fez.<br>

As for the monthly sub costing more, that would be false, unless you're talking about an online only subscription which Sirius doesn't currently offer. Both subscriptions are the same $12.95/month.
