I am tired of living here (too expensive and corrupt) and would like to see America as well as start anew. Is this a good choice?
Kinda going from one extreme to another, don't you think?
Corruption is everywhere. If you want to find a cheaper and more enjoyable place, travel until you find one that suits you. If Jerry Garcia were still alive, I'd suggest becoming a temporary Deadhead.

why not go to Cali, or down south?

Now that I think about it, since you don't mind cold weather (Montana), why not go to Canada? I don't know what the cost of living is up there, but I'm sure it's cheaper than Jersey.

Cali is just as corrupt and expensive to live in as Jersey. Unless, of course, you want to live in Fresno or Weed. If you think Jersey is bad, Cali is worse.

I've always wanted to see Montana too. As long as you don't mind cow shit and horses, it should be an ok place. One of these days I'll get to see the open range...

Leaving the NYC area is a whole lot more difficult than most people would choose to believe. I've had many friends and family members move away (to California, Florida, Vermont, Massachusetts, etc.) and all of them have either returned or expressed a desire to return. It's the classic case of not knowing what you have until it's gone. Just try and find authentic ethnic cuisine, museums, professional baseball, football, basketball, and hockey, musicals, clubs, and everything else we have anywhere else.

Trust me, you'd miss it tremendously. In a year's time you'd be offering your left arm for a decent bagel or slice of pizza.

Unless you're looking for closedmindedness and militias Montana might
not be the best choice. A friend of mine left CT to go to Univ of
Montana in Boseman and he only lasted one semester. Too rural for
even him.
When I was younger, my family used to spend time on Flathead Lake in Montana every summer. It's beatiful country, and we had a great time when we were there. However, I would go nuts if I was there more than the 1-2 weeks we usually spent there. When you're used to living a certain way, such an extreme change can be too much of a shock to the system.

I grew up in rural Pa, Half my life..learned how to shoot, learned how to grow plants, use plants medicinally, how to cook, and how to work on a farm. Perhaps I am having a midlife crisis. But I tire of alot of the race stereotypes that I have encountered in the last 18 years here in NJ. Closemindedness, I am used to, I am a catholic in a methodist resort town. I have dealt with it for 10 years.

Yeah, we get snow and ice and cold and floods, but it beats the hell outta the corruption, crowds and crime. Ya can't go skiing on concrete! Ya gotta plan ahead a bit when it comes to food shopping, but that's easy. Get a deep freeze or a vaccumsealer and life will be that much easier.

The only thing I miss is the pizza, but I've learned how to make my own from scratch. Best pizza in NH! And this one surprised me; Our local Benihana type place serves fresher beef and chicken and has much friendlier service than that snobby, racist, overpriced hole in a building on 53rd St. (or wherever, I could never remember and always had to walk a few blocks till I got it right, 55th maybe?).

Oh, and most importantly, people acknowledge each other and are friendly. Well I just got back from out there on an interview and accepted the job... I got an apartment larger than my current one for half the price and will be leaving in about a week and a half. I saw only three black people out there, and one was homeless...go figure. Butte has alot of neat history and buildings. Some bars stay open 24 hours a day. Huge Irish population, real estate is cheap. For a nice house that would cost about 500000 in Jersey, it costs 75000. The people are nice, and a very supportive community. There will be some language differences to get used to....I ordered a diet soda and got seltzer water. Apparently you have to ask for Pop. The only down side is that there is a huge Meth problem out there.

you know for a long time i wanted to move away from the city for a few reasons, the usual ones i guess, schools, cost of living, but my chick would never hear of it. so i give it up. yesterday she says that she has been thinking about us moving down south (char, NC) where we have friends already. this is perfect for me. i have always loved it there and i can get a job in the same field as now and make pretty much the same thing. she on the other hand would be changing fields and would take a big cut in pay and i would be picking up the slack. her mom and dad (they are retired) would move too so that they can be close to us which is fine except for one thing: you know where they are going to live? with us. so I would be the supporter of this whole family?? i think i will pass, stay here and struggle. thoughts?

Coach, I can say for sure that Montana is an awesome place to live, for my brother and his wife lived out there for about 10 years during and after college. My family (from SC) has a place out there, in Bozeman, and I love to go out there and spend time. I spent a summer there during college and had a blast. It is kind of a shame, though, so many people are moving out there and changing the way of life for the people who hopped on the MT bandwagon before there was one. I think I heard some Montanans say of some New York, New Jersey people that they ruined their own damned state and shouldn't come and ruin theirs. Can't say I disagree necessarily, but it's a free country. That being said, I would love to live in MT and recommend it to anyone. Bozeman, Livingston, both are fantastic places to live.

Chili, Unlike other Jerseyians, I seek not to go out there and build a cheap McMansion, rather I am seeking a place to settle and grow roots. I seek not to be a jackass tourist, but to assimilate into the community, make friends, and establish a home. The people of Butte have been very nice to me in my time out there. I feel I can be happy there.
I really like it here, except for two things: the summer heat and humidity, and the high price of living here. It is tempting to just chuck it all sometimes and go elsewhere. But there aren't many other places I would want to live. I couldn't see myself living in the South (including Florida). Other places are a little too whitebred. New York is way too big for me. I don't like New England because many New Englanders have an attitude that pisses me off. I could actually see myself living in California, but not for more than a few years. I'm just not a west coast guy. As for the summer heat, I figure I might eventually look into renting a summer place in Western New York/Southern Ontario where I'm from. It'd be a lot cheaper than anything comparable on the East coast, and I defy anyone to find a part of the country that is as nice during the summer.
