Am i the only one amazed that no matter what is talked about on the show ron is so knowledgable and informed.I beleive today's unexpected interview with boone from animal house tops it. He knew all his movies and was able to carry the interview with no prep sheet or advanced notice. I say move over professor Anthony here comes professor Ron.

I was actually thinking during the interview, what a Ron and Anthony show would be like. Do you think they are both too brilliant to be around each other. Like too many cooks spoil the broth?

I personally think Ron is the funniest person ever. He outshines everyone. Anthony is second, who is usually funnier than any comedian that comes on the show.

I've thought the same about a Ron and Anthony show, but they both need a second banana, they are too good at being alpha to work together. Thats the only thing I think will be the demise of O&A, Opie needs to take a back seat sometimes. I would have never imagined me being interested in O&A and NEVER in ron & fez, but now I hate even going to lunch cuz I don't wanna miss what ronnie has to say. Its definately an acquired taste, but once u get it in your mouth, you don't wanna let go! OMG, i'm turning into fez.............

It's difficult to criticize without coming off as an unappreciative douche and I do have immense respect for Ron and his intellect and am an enourmous fan of the show, but we are not "OnA Army" sheep or "pests" or "whackbaggers" or whatever their calling themselves these days and the show, particularly the deeper more serious discussions, are all about the spirit of free discussion. So it's with that in mind that I write this.

There are times during these discussions that Ron infuriates me. He'll be going along arguing back and forth with all the guys in studio and the callers, like yesterday with the God and the Devil conversation. When Ron gets going there aren't many who can stand against his questions. It seems at times that every possible explanation people have, Ron is able to find the flaws in their argument. His questions are pointed, well thought out, and probing. His display of thinking on his feet is truly impressive. It becomes even more apparent when the caller is not arguing logically, or is just way out in leftfield, such as the guy who called in and was talking about being spirits before we're born and Lucifer wanting to force us to be good and go to heaven. The guy was a jackass, and Ron basically picked him apart.

The next guy, I forget his name, could have been Chris, he was a youth minister from Oklahoma City, seemed like he was making some very good points, like he would have been able to stand toe to toe with Ron for a while and Ronnie completely disengaged and dismissed him. Instead of continuing the discussion, he started doing jokes off what the guy was saying. Chris would say something about free will, and Ron, instead of couterarguing just was like, "or Free wheelin'." And then the guy made a very good point that the story wasn't over and that God was indeed going to destroy the Devil at the End of Times, which basically was a shot at one of the foundational pillars of Ron's side of the argument. Ron didn't come back at him like he had done with the other callers, but went into the bit about Europe and "The Final Countdown" essentially cutting the guy off, talking and playing the music over him, and effectively ending the discussion.

There are a million reasons why Ron could've done this, and I don't necessarily think it's because he couldn't argue with the guy. It does, however, only seem to happen when it's someone who can stay with him, back and forth. It comes across as kind of childish, like a kid playing a video game and whooping everyone and then he gets beat, or gets close to being beat and is like, "Uhp, I don't want to play anymore." It's frustrating to listen to, and like I said, Ron is obviously a brilliant guy and doesn't do this all the time, so that's what makes it all the more frustrating; it makes him seem like a ham 'n egger.

blackjeezis - cool to see a long, well thought out and well argued post. I have to disagree however -- while I've also wanted a smarter caller to call in to argue a point, I've always found that Ron tries his best to help callers get their point out (sometimes to the point of a mini-cringe on my part, heh).

I thnik that sometimes there's are strong components of "go with the bit" and "maybe isn't funny" in his argument style. Pick a point of view and GO WITH IT.

Ron seems to have a well formulated & interesting position on pretty much any topic that comes up. I remain impressed. I'd love to see an old prep sheet for a show -- to see if it is indeed something along the lines of "topic X leads into interview with guy Y which is related to X / then discuss toilet paper." I'm betting that the prep sheet is bare bones and that Ron is just a thoughtful guy (plus if he is to be believed he's not big on prep work, heh). And I dig that.

The guy might have made some good points about being good... but once you say something like that, the conversation is over. The end of Earth's time will be approximatley 5 billion years from now, when our sun enters its red giant phase, entending its size out towards the orbit of Mars. Humans will be long gone before that. Some other species will live on top of our ruins, possibly worshiping their own gods. But the whole notion of god and the devil will be long, long forgotten.

Blakjeezis-

Ron does cut people off or blow them off occasionally. In most cases, I think he just wants the show to move on to a different topic. If he does cut them off when he feels he is being challenged, he does it far less than other radio talk show hosts.

He wasn't arguing that the Devil didn't exist, necessarily, he was saying that if he exists why does God allow it, as a way of undermining the entire mythology of Christianity. His end goal, I'm assuming, was to argue the silliness of the whole thing, to get people to question their beliefs critically not just to challenge them himself. To make it a science vs religion thing from the start would have not worked to that end. Whatever, I'm drifting.

The point is, he entertained the arguments of other people who were as equally far out as this guy, and further. The difference is that this guy seemed well equipped to do the dance. It comes off as bullying a little bit.

You know what? Maybe I'm wrong a little bit here. Ron gets, and deservedly so, the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure he does this to all manner of callers, I guess it's just more apparent to me when it happens this way, like it sticks out a little more, a selective memory type of thing.
