Any chance with a new pope there will be a Vatican III ?

I think the church can get some membership back if they lift a ban on priests being married . Also they can modernize on birth control. They wouldn't have to support abortion but they can in exceptions like rape or incest and approve of its members taking the pill. Ditch that no meat on Fridays during lent rule as well.

I had zero idea this thread went back to 2006, kudos to you gentlemen for calling this horse race over 7 years ago.
I knew this guy was a creep but I had zero idea he would break tradition and step down.
Part of being pope is dying in office so everyone mourns his loss and there is some pagentry to elect the next one.
I am not even Catholic but I was amazed the by the color of smoke in 1982.
I actually still can't believe this guy step down and broke tradition.

If implemented the right way probably not. The Church has acknowledge it's biggest scandal which is the sex abuse case. As long as they have a ban on unmarried priests they will continue to see empty Churches in the developed world.

Its expanding in the 3rd world because many don't have access to communication so they don't know anything about these scandals and they believe that the clergy is infallible.

I don't see any proper way to implement such sweeping changes. I'm not catholic, but as I understand it the Pope is God's voice on the earth, and what he says is infallible. Combine this belief with the belief in an omniscient God, you can't very well say he changed his mind. So you'd have to admit that the Church was bending to man, rather than man bending for the church.

There were some changes in Vatican II in the mid 1960s

There wasn't always a ban on priests being married. In the early days of the church they were allowed to marry.

Look at the bible for example. The new testament is much less strict than the old testament. The church can modernize and make some changes but it still can hold onto it's core values of practicing monotheism and recognizing Jesus as the son of god.

I see your point however, The Church needs man in order to exist.

Vatican 2 made no changes to church doctrine, they just modernized a little by allowing Mass to be done in the language of the individual parishes, and a few other things like that. The things you said would be major doctrine changes.
The old testament was a demonstration of man's failure to live up to any standard God set up, starting with don't eat this fruit and ending with the sacrifice system that people ruined by buying their sacrifices outside of the temple rather than raising it themselves.
The New testament is God providing the sacrifice and paying the sin debt himself. This moves mankind from a works based worship to a faith based worship.

I wouldn't call it church doctrine but the Church finally acknowledged the sun as the center of the solar system I think it was in the early 1990s. Galileo was put under house arrest during the inquisition for his conclusions

At one time a lot of the faithful were uneducated and illiterate and only the upper class and clergy were educated. There are about 1.2 billion catholics. I have no idea of the breakdown of people who are educated but it's a greater percentage than the middle ages

You can watch it live on Vatican TV so you'll know the moment a bunch of old (mostly white) guys decide.
