Ugh.

The worst week ever to get served with Jury duty. July 3rd week. I have a 4 day weekend from work that weekend and I am planning to go away on vacation. 4th of July is on Tuesday so I have that day and Monday off of work. Plans are all set to go away and now I get hit with this thing in the mail.

Is there any way I can get out of it or have them move it to some other time? I see on there that you can request it to be moved but is a planned vacation valid enough? The names of the rooms and stuff are not in my name so I have no written proof that I am going but I still am going. Not going would screw things up and cause people to need to find someone else to take my spot.

Think it will work as a reason to get it moved or will they just tell me to shut up and show up?

Only one push off in life? So if I use it now I'll never again be able to push back jury duty?

i could be wrong but i always remembered being told that you can only push it off once and after that you cant have any excuses for not showing up.

but maybe its only once whenever your name comes up so for example you get called next week, cant go and you give a valid excuse and they reschedule for 2 months later and 4 years from now you get called again, you might be able to delay it again.

im not really sure i've only been called once and i just sucked it up and went, mainly because i was hating my job at the time and didnt really care

I highly recomend doing jury duty the week before july 4th. i did that, and because of the holiday, they didnt want to start any cases. you are supposed to be there 3 days, they let us go after 1 1/2. also, in that 1 1/2 day they only had ONE jury get called.

I got a jury duty summons in February. In New York, there was a phone number on the summons that would allow a one-time postponement for up to six months. It's not a lifetime postmonement, but for this particular jury duty summons (i.e. once every 4 years).

I called today and they said I need proof that I have hotel reservations and such in order to get it pushed back for 6 months.

Hmm.

Finished! After 18 weeks (every Thursday since Feb.) on a Grand Jury, it's finally over! I will admit I freaked out a little when I got selected, but honestly, I will miss it. I've met some very nice people and heard some interesting cases. The best case being: Bizarre Indian Love Triangle. It was strange to read about our verdicts in the paper. If you ever get selected, just roll with it. It won't be as bad as you think.
