I guess lacrosse players need to compensate for the fact that they play such a non-sport. If people really gave a shit about lacrosse, wouldn't there be a professional league that people watched?
Well, on the opposite, a large amount of people watching something doesn't necessarily guarantee it any amount of substantial coverage...for example, NASCAR gets about 100,000 people a race, yet is barely covered in the major sports media

Races get prime network coverage. Daytona 500 gets huge ratings. The major races do get highlighted on the evening news (admittedly, very brief, but it's there). Compared to what the other sports get? Compared to the relative popularity of NASCAR?
Its a drop in the bucket
I'm no NASCAR junkie (i like it, but i'm not fanatic about it)...i'm just trying to make a point about how popularity doesn't necessarily mean a sport will rise above "niche" status

Okay, there are more NASCAR fans, than Lacrosse fans.
But, which group has more teeth?
Higher SAT scores?
Less likely to listen to Country Music?
Actually, one of the bigger issues in NASCAR lately is NASCAR'S attempt to completely distance itself from the whole "redneck" culture...they've done things like change the name of the series to Nextel Cup, and have cut the races at the "traditional" tracks like Martinsville and Bristol to like once or twice a year in favor of other more cosmopolitan tracks. A lot of the top drivers now aren't even Southern, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth are all from the Midwest or Cali...
And then there's this too
I for one, couldn't be happier about it....I HATE rednecks
