my apartment complex appears to have lots of mice. Most residents on
multiple floors have seen, heard, or smelled mice in their
apartment. THe landloard is just having the exterminators put
down traps, but that aint going to do much. anyone have any
suggestions? i know i cant get rid of them, i just want to keep
them away from my apartment.

(by the way, it is a nice apartment building in a good part of nyc, and moving is not an option.)
Buy a cat & inform him or her of your problem

The only thing you can do is seal up as best you can any holes that will allow them in (under doorsm walls, openings where pipes come through etc). They carry disease and rodents are making a big comeback in the city. You might want a cat. Mice smell the cat and will stay away, but if they do come in...goodbye! Rodent shit causes illness too. Fleas from mice can infest your apartment and sicken you as well. I would band together the other tenants and insist on the landlord to eliminate them.

Find any and all holes, cracks, seams, and fill them up. Remember that these things can get through any opening they can get their filthy head through, so be thorough. These things are creatures of habit, and they mark their disgusting trails with their filth, so they're likely to come back and try to chew back through to get to a place where they know there's food or something they want, so get you a wad of steel wool. Not S.O.S. or Brillo pads. Go to the hardware store and get the bulk stuff that's used for sanding. Stuff this in tight to any and all openings. They won't chew through this. Make sure it's tight enough where they can't push it out. Seal it in if you have to with caulk or joint compound, or whatever you've got. Make sure your door is sealed all the way around, and seals tight when it's shut.

Mice and Rats come in looking for usually one (or all) of three things. Food, water, or stuff to make their disgusting nest more cushy (or simply for shelter). Make sure that none of the above is accessible. Get yourself to the store, or to one of your Aunt's "tupperware parties" (do they still have those?), and get in the habit of sealing everything in airtight containers. Especially your dry stuff. Get containers big enough to dump your box of fruit loops into, your crackers, chips, rice, pasta, everything. Remember that these fuckers can chew through boxes and thin plastic packaging. Don't leave anything out on the counter unless it's in a container. Keep the floors and countertops clean, and clean behind your appliances regularly.

Try not to leave standing water either, although there's not a lot you can do about the commode, but most small mice won't be able to climp the sides. Try not to leave water in the sinks. If you have a pet... well, the food and water you put out for your cat or dog is also very attractive to the vermin. Not much you can do there except to make sure you are buying food in cans, or again, sealing it in a plastic container that they can't chew through, and try to get you pet in the habit of eating everything they can in one sitting, and then cleaning the dish afterwards. You're stuck leaving water out though.

As far as stuff for their cribs, check to make sure you don't have a bag of cottonballs accessible. Think like a mouse and look around for stuff they might want to take back to their home. And if you have clothes stored on a top shelf or under a bed, make sure they're not making that their home, or chewing it up.

Bottom line: If you don't have anything they want, they'll eventually stop trying to get in.

Finally, if you've done all of this, and you've trapped some inside, get some glue boards and place a small dab of peanut butter in the center. The sumbitches are crazy for peanut butter. It also works good with snap-traps. They can't just sneak it off of the trip lever. They'll sit there and eat it off until they trip it.

Good luck.

o o O ((Why do I suddenly feel Like "MIDDLE AGED MAN"... the old Mike Meyers bit from SNL?))

when we had mice in our apt growing up my dad would stuff the mouseholes with steel wool. not their assholes but the holes they made in the walls HAHA....

peanut butter was the preferred bait on the trap. eventually he got rid of e'm...

my eldest brother one time called me into his room to show me some 'mouse killing contraption' he made. he was hearing mice in the corner of his room so what he did was he leaned a folding chair against the wall which held up a five pound weight. he had a slipper in his bed and when he threw it and hit the chair the five pound weight would fall. i have to tell you honestly he was real proud of himself. as far as i know he never killed a mouse that way...

My parents have mice and they use the "hav-a-heart" traps. It traps the mouse
alive in a box and they drive a few miles away and let it go. Good solution if you
don't want to kill them.
