firstly, i hate cigerette smoke and i know that it is bad for thbose that do smoke. i know how hard it must be to stop. with that said, if 90% of all smokers stop smoking tomorrow and nver go back how will this countries economy survive? what would become of all of those tobbaco farmers down south? what about all of the tax revenue generated by cigerette sales?

reminded me of when they brought in some guy to school with a hole in

him and called him stupid to his face and then we got yelled at and

with smokeing and then they had no answer

Hbox, this country doesnt promote blue collar jobs anymore. we dont make anything. we ship it in to help smaller countries. to most people in this country a manufacturing job is an insult.
the NAFTA is not about peoples ability to adapt. those jobs left the country, not the city or state even. help 10 years ago the mid hudson valley went to shit when a few big companies left for south of the border. it still hasnt recovered all together. you do not just snap your fingers and get another job.

Look, what I am not saying these people will just snap their fingers and get new, equal jobs. But it will not destroy the economy, it will not doom these people to eternal poverty. Shit somewhat similar to this theoretical impossibility has happened before and will happen again. People will adapt, and a country full of people who willingly don't smoke is preferable to a country full of people who do. The idea that this country's economy is reliant on tobacco is ludicrous. Hell, the tobacco companies have already gone through a hellacious decade and we're not all living on the street.
Hbox, i see what you are saying. but my point is that the strain on the rest of the economy to compensate for that loss of revenue. like you said "the govenrment always gets theirs". well think gas is big $$$ now? think a gallon of milk is heavly taxed now? or anything else. tobbaco led the way for the industrialzation of this country. tobbaco, coal etc. are the reasons that there are railways and mega highways here in america.
plus there is the freedom of choice issue here as well.
people want their bacon dammit.

While I have grown to hate people who smoke, I am against the idea of taking away peoples choice to smoke. I really like non smoking in restaurants and even bars, though I think if people want to smoke outside or in the privacy of their homes or whatever that they should be able to.

Question for those of you who smoke:

I have a theory about portion control. It's my opinion that most people will consume however much product is in front of them. Open a can of Coke...drink it. Order some fries...eat 'em. Etc etc. Nobody ever really CRAVES 9 or 10 more fries. They eat the ones in the sleeve thingie and they are satisfied. 50 yrs ago, if a can of coke was 10 or 14 ounces (instead of 12) wouldn't we just drink 10 or 14 oz now?

My question is; if tobacco companies put only 10 cigs in one pack, would people still smoke "a pack a day"? Would 10 smokes satisfy them the same way that, right now, 25 cigs do? Obviously, I'm not talking about the people who are ALREADY hooked on 25 a day. But, in two years from now...if we produced ONLY the 10-pack, would that be satisfying? 12 year old kids decide to smoke, they go to the store and have ONE option: a 10 pack. Would those kids feel compelled to purchase and open (and smoke) a whole other pack??

Marc with a c
06-06-2006, 06:39 PM

that is a good question, but i don't think that is the case.

i
smoke 5-10 a day depending on what i am doing. but the pack amount
doesn't stop me. i hate not having smokes on me, so i buy another
pack before i am done with my current pack. i don't think the amount in
a pack (20) would affect how much folks smoke.

you very well could be right, but i feel that "a pack a day" isn't
exactly a pack, they don't stop after 20. i'm sure sometimes its 15
sometimes it's 25, it really depends on your day.

decreasing the pack size probably wouldn't make people cut back.

Have I told ypu lately I love you? I really do.

I'm the Ilse Koch of smoking.

The success of the tobacco industry depends very little on anything in the U.S. anymore. Sure there are lots of smokers. But the tobacco industry is one field where globalization and the fall of communism has been a win-win. Most of Eastern Europe and half of China, the most populous nation on earth, is addicted to our delicious tobacco goodness. Who benefits? We do. You can't grow it as easily other places, so there's little chance of it being outsourced.

I'm of two minds about bans otherwise. I generally believe people should be able to fuck up their bodies as much as they want without the government stepping in. But as an asthmatic who likes to go to a bar now and again without smelling like ass afterwards from people inhaling fiberglass into their lungs, it's hard to deny that the ban has been great. And nobody's lost any revenue, because, let's face it, people gotta have their alcohol, and if that means they gotta go otuside and smoke in the cold, so be it. The fact that DC hasn't banned smoking in bars is an absolute black mark on the district and a disgrace for a place that likes to view itself as progressive. Virginia will never ban it. DC and Maryland should.

Nice.

it's about $250 to get an ashtray installed in your car. i just drink a soda and leave it a quarter full and deposit the smoked cancerstick in there. unfortunately, i have forgotten i did this one and took a swig. I try not to toss out the window because they fly back in or i'm direly afraid of hitting motorcyclist's. In all honesty though, there is always trash on the side of the road because someone ate taco bell and didn't feel like bringing the bag to a receptical because *ding* it was stinking their car up. Thusly, city maintenence takes care of a bulk of this. What else are jailer's going to do? It's not right that smokers and PEOPLE THAT TOSS ANYTHING out their window do it. It's just easier to point out smokers. Non-smokers and smokers alike have rights. They should respect each other. I don't go to a playground and smoke cigarettes. You don't do that at a place that is MADE for kids. Just like, if i'm going to a drafthouse known for being the only movietheater where you can drink and smoke....i'll be damned if some douchebag is going to fake cough behind me after i light up.

Your house comment is kinda lame. Houses can't come to a short stop thusly causing anything not nailed down to go flying. unless you live in a trailer. and houses never came equipped with ashtrays to begin with.

all in all. with the amount of bars, restaurants and public establishments in metropolitian areas banning smoking and the price of cigarettes going up, no one is going to need to worry about this anymore.

that ashtray is called the smokers group package. not only will it cost you mmore when you buy, it also will lower the value when you trade the car in. nice.

it's about $250 to get an ashtray installed in your car.

And it's less than $10 for those ashtrays you can put in a cup holder. And before you complain any further, nobody cares, deal with it, that's called dealing with the consequences of your lifestyle choice.

ust like, if i'm going to a drafthouse known for
