Not a Coulter fan, but I did agree with her real point on the Today show. It's important to note that every comment she makes has two parts: Her real point, which may have some merit, and the apeshit part that later she'll use as evidence for how she doesn't get fair treatment and how people don't address her real point."They" and "we" aside, I found her criticism of the liberal spokespeople dead-on, but I don't blame the liberals or the Dems, I blame the media. Sheehan gets face time to speak out against the war (which is a foreign policy issue as Coulter said), but there is no dialog about the foreign policy elements. It becomes a human interest story. I think that's a legitimate point, and even a significant one.But instead of having a debate about media coverage and the lack of serious dialog on foreign policy (Ron mentioned this, "You don't give Rumsfeld a hard time"), we fixate on her idiotic comments about so-called opportunistic war widows. She gets to look like the victim to her fans and puts another mark in the column for why the "liberal media" is ruining the country. "I went on their show, but did they want to have a serious discussion? No, they just wanted to attack me."

Let me ask a few questions hereIf someone enters the political arena, aren't you allowed to question, and yes even attack, what they stand for? If someone has suffered a tragedy of some sort, does that make them an instant expert on foriegn policy (re Sheehan) or national defense policy, building codes, etc  (the four 9/11 widows she referenced) and therefore someone worth listening to?  I've had lots of tragedies in my life, and nobody ever gave me 1.8 million $$. Or a book deal, or a PAC. Frankly, I'm grieved out by some of these people who've made their widow status a cottage industry. There's alot of suffering going on in the world right now, alot of people who REALLY need help. These folks have already been taken care of better than most of us ever will, despite having to deal with similar or worse tragedies.  I'm also glad to see that since so many people were so offended by her personal attacks, that they didn't respond in kind. You know, since personal attacks are such a bad thing. But this is just another mindless Right/Left argument where nobody in it sees beyond their own bias.

Jim Norton made the best point about this that I've heard. Although there is a point in Coulter's argument, she attempts to prove it by saying there outrageous things. She says that these widows are enjoying their spouses deaths, gets rightly killed for saying it, and then tries to spin that as her main point, that she can't challenge the widows. Well, she wouldn't get this reaction if she made a geniune argument, and she knew this, so she creates this hateful, antagonistic screed and tries to spin the reaction to that as this stupid "doctrine of infallibility." It's a completely disingenous argument even forgetting how obscene it is.

I agree with her to a point but then when I find myself agreeing with her I feel dirty.Like BDC said, we're talking about some of these widows.  For me it was Lisa Beamer shortly after 9/11 milking that whole "Let's Roll" myth, getting her mug on evey talk show, then getting a book deal.  To me it was the embodiment of America's love of both "being a victim" and the craving of fame and celebrity.

As a veteran of the first Gulf War, I would turn in my grave if my mother used my death in the line of duty for her political agenda, either for or against the war. That being said, Anne Coulter was WAY over the line with her attacks on the 9/11 widows.  While I am more conservative than liberal by training and upbringing, I consider myself a moderate.  This is a group that I fear has no voice.  If you're left then you've got Air America and CNN and to the right you've got Fox and the likes of Coulter and Limbaugh.  At the end of the day all they do is scream and call each other names, what does that solve?  If there was any valid message in Coulter's remarks it was certainly lost any heat because of her disgusting methods and manner.  When are we going to realize that everyone's thoughts, feelings and ideas have merit?  The term Flip-Flop was thrown around alot in the last election.  I would like to think that if someone has a position, then thinks about it, performs due diligence, then changes his/her mind, then has the intestinal fortitude to say "Hey I have thought about this and I have changed my views..."  Is that weakness or strength?  Only a Fool deals in absolutes, on either side of the fence.  I look around at Our Country and I am sad in what I see.  One big Dysfunctional Family, that mocks what we do not understand.  So IMHO Coulter...Franken, it's all the same.  This is a time in our history when we need serious people to solve serious problems.  We are all genectically 99.5 % identical as human beings except for the color of our skin and our beliefs.  It is a shame we do not see our common needs and goals.  Instead we dwell on our differences.  Where is the voice of Moderate America?

I think in the case of Ann Coulter it is the doctrine of fallibility, not
infallibility, that we should be concerned with.  In essence, if you make
an extreme political statement that is outrageous, ridiculous, and inherently flawed,
your statement will be heard by more people than a statement which does not
fall on the far ends of the spectrum.

 

Like Tom Cruises’ diatribe concerning the mental health
professions, people will  remember Ann
Coulter’s statement on the Today show far longer than any statement made by any
of the 9/11 widows.  But again, whether
it is Fox News, CNN, or your local news, it is all entertainment.

That being said, Anne Coulter was WAY over the line with her attacks on the 9/11 widows.  While I am more conservative than liberal by training and upbringing, I consider myself a moderate.  This is a group that I fear has no voice.  If you're left then you've got Air America and CNN and to the right you've got Fox and the likes of Coulter and Limbaugh.  At the end of the day all they do is scream and call each other names, what does that solve?  If there was any valid message in Coulter's remarks it was certainly lost any heat because of her disgusting methods and manner.  When are we going to realize that everyone's thoughts, feelings and ideas have merit?  The term Flip-Flop was thrown around alot in the last election.  I would like to think that if someone has a position, then thinks about it, performs due diligence, then changes his/her mind, then has the intestinal fortitude to say "Hey I have thought about this and I have changed my views..."  Is that weakness or strength?  Only a Fool deals in absolutes, on either side of the fence.  I look around at Our Country and I am sad in what I see.  One big Dysfunctional Family, that mocks what we do not understand.  So IMHO Coulter...Franken, it's all the same.  This is a time in our history when we need serious people to solve serious problems.  We are all genectically 99.5 % identical as human beings except for the color of our skin and our beliefs.  It is a shame we do not see our common needs and goals.  Instead we dwell on our differences.  Where is the voice of Moderate America?  I agree. Well said, Ogre. As a liberal that hates liberal ideologues, you and I probably disagree on alot of things, but damn if I don't respect your commitment to objectivity and civility. And hasn't it been pretty much been proven, and vehemntly brought to our attention by a lot of the " anti-war " people, that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 ?So if thats the case what makes these widows' opinions any more valid that anybody else's ?Given the death toll of soldiers in the war to date ( and unfortunately I dont know it ) arent there that many Cindy Sheehans ? I mean every soldier theoretically has a mother no ?So why is Sheehan the poster child ? Because she grieves in public more than some, excuse me 95%, of the others. That fact alone lends some credence, no matter how piss poorly or unsentimental it was, to Coulter's ( unless she didnt say the term first ) use of the term " grief-eratzzi " ( or however you spell it )If Sheehan lost 1 son and another woman lost 2 does that make the woman who lost 2 children " more correct " on her point regardless of which way she sides ?
