View Full Version : Cross-Bronx or Tappan Zee?
I'm going to be passing through the NY metro area tomorrow. Probably at rush hour. Yes I realize my folly. What's the best way to go?

It depends on where you're coming from and where you are headed.

One rule of thumb for New York travel, though: Never EVER use the Cross Bronx for anything.

If you need to cut through Westchester (say from CT to NJ) use 287 or the Cross County to the Tappan Zee.

If you must cut through the Bronx, I'd use the Bruckner for E-W and the Bronx River/Sprain for N-S.

Good luck!

I'm coming south from the Turnpike, and I need to get to 95 again in Connecticut. Is Palisades Parkway a good option?

Do you mean coming from the south in Jersey?

If so, then the Tap may be too far out of the way for you. But if it's not, then 287 does meet up with 95 just before CT.

I don't know much about the Palisades' traffic. Sorry about that.

I am coming from Jersey (Maryland actually). How about taking 95 across Manhattan to 87, then cutting over, and then getting off at Mamaroneck Ave South by Winged Foot and getting on 95 from there?

I will never use the Cross Bronx for anything again either, unless I had no other choice. It should be destroid! One time I was in stand still traffic on it in front of these abandoned looking buildings and I am looking at the car in front of me and suddenly, a piece of cement the size of a half gallon of milk smashes onto the top of the guys car. I see the guy just look up at his roof from inside, but he did not get out. He was very lucky. Another time, my mom and I were stuck on it and it was stand still in either direction during a heat wave and for some reason, this black guy comes walking through all the cars and goes up to the divider and starts starts pissing on it, in full view of a cop stuck in traffic on the other side! The cop just looked at him. Unbelieveable.

i thought this thread was about two tranny hookers. damn it.
both way will make you pull your hair out. but the Cross bronx is shorter. Why not go up through the hudson valley? it is nicer scenary.

NJ Turnpike to the Garden State Parkway into New York State to 287 East.

It's the only way I would even attempt at rush hour.

This is what you do. Go over the GWB and take the Henry Hudson / West side highway north(there is a toll though) . Take the Cross County parkway East to the Sprain Brook Parkway north. Take that to 287 East and you'll hit I95 north right by CT.

Anyway you go through NY during rush hour will be a pain. I would probably stay on I95 though, just to avoid getting lost if you are not familiar with NYC

I travel from 95 in Central Jersey to 95 in CT on an almost weekly basis. It requires planning. What I do is, once I hit around Exit 9 on the Turnpike, I pop on the traffic channel.

If the George Washington Bridge is less than a 15 minute wait, I take the turnpike all the way up to the GWB then travel on 95 through the Bronx into CT. Thats the best way if there is MINIMAL traffic.

If there is no traffic on the bridge, but traffic in the Bronx, I hit 87 North off of the bridge until it merges with 287, then take 287 to 95N CT.

If there is traffic on the Bridge, I take the GSP N until I hit NY, 287 E over the Tap, 287E until the 95N exit. THIS IS THE LONGEST WAY - I only do this is there is traffic on the GWB.

i dont think thats the longest way missy. Even with not any significant traffic on any of the routes, just with set up and everything, you can go alot faster up the GSP to 97. And from the GSP to the Tap on the Thruway is only like 5-10 minutes. Distance it may be slightly longer but its the best way to go, usually even at 3am it would be better. Just dont come back that way in the afternoon.

It used to be fine, tappan zee bridge best way anywhere. Last time I came home that way, it took me 5 hours just to get from 684 to the Tap on 287.

No traffic I can make it going up the turnpike, over the GWB, 95 straight up to Stamford, in an hour and 15 minutes. That is a straight line from the Turnpike to 95 in CT. The tappan zee way takes at least 2 hours even with no traffic. And you always will hit traffic right where you get off the GSP and hit 287.

I have this trip down - the key is to listen to traffic station and then figure out your approach. I usually don't hit traffic on the GWB or 95 in the Bronx, but I am usually travelling on the weekend.

but it isnt really that much longer when you consider you travel about the same distance. When you just on the parkway from the turnpike, you arent going at the angle anymore. Its almost like the way you go with out traffic is the hypotenuse(sp) of the traingle. Its shorter, but not enough to make it a bad way to go, no matter when you go. Just dont come back that way
I'll in be Lindenhurst, what I do now is take the Southern State to the Belt, then Verazzano Bridge into Staten Island, Staten Island Expressway to the Outerbridge, then Turnpike South. I basically need to go to Exit 8 on the Turnpike from Lindenhurst, NY. It looks like the tolls are gonna kill me ($15 round trip at least).

Is there an easier way? I know absolutely nothing about Long Island. I need to be at work around 9. I'll leave at 6 if I can beat traffic.

to me the Belt could be the only road worse then the Cross Bronx. I live in Franklin Square and travel to Parsipanny, so my route seems the best for where i need to go...Southern State to Cross Island..over the Throgs Neck to the Cross Bronx to the GWB to 80. i wish it was only once a week. its $15 a day for tolls and i spend around $70 a week in gas. both me and my wife work at the same job, so at least we don't have two seperate commute bills to pay. i work 7:30-3:30, so i usually leave my house around 6. i luck out and miss the really bad rush hour traffic, but i never make the ride without sitting in some traffic. on the way home i don't even bother with the Cross Island or Southern State...i just take the Throgs Neck and continue on the Clearview to Hillside Avenue..then i take side streets for 15 minutes until i'm home. not as direct, but it beats the 30-45 minutes of traffic on the CI and SSP.

having to be at work at 9 for the trip is the worst. you are better off like you said just leaving at 6 and missing the worst of the traffic...especially from where you are commuting from further out. you need to go further south then i do, so your route is probably best, as bad as it is. thats actually a killer commute you have. makes mine not seem so bad.

Takes at least 15 once you get off the parkway to get to D&B, D&B to the CT line at 95 is at least 30/45 minutes. I'm telling you, I do this trip multiple times a month. He's not talking NJ to NY, he's talking NJ to CT. If the bridge and 95 are semi clear, he can make it from at least exit 8 on NJTPK to exit 8 on CT95 in under an hour and half. GSP to 287 to 95 should be a last resort if all other options are backed up.

If the GWB is clear, it is the fastest way. It takes you straight to CT. IF 95 though the Bronx is slow, you take 87N to the 287 exit to 95. it's a straight line up, instead of a straight line up and to the west then you have to cut over 287 all across Westchester.

Taking 87 to 287 puts you almost all the way to the TZ anyway. If you're going 87, better to use the either the Cross County to cut over to the Hutch north which puts you closer to CT when you hit 287 (exit 10 on 287), or Bronx River to Sprain to Taconic to 287 (exit 3 on 287)

Maybe I drive faster them most, I dont know. I have this arguement all the time with people who try to tell me to get to Boston is a 4+ hour drive. They are insane too. I dont know how people take so much longer to get places then it takes me

Got back an hour and a half ago.

On the way up I listened to the radio, and the GWB was backed up an hour when I got to the area, so I followed Snoogans's advice and took the GSP all the way up to 287 and then to 95. The Tappan Zee bridge is a complete rip off, but I guess you gotta pay if you want to keep moving. I was moving pretty much the entire time on the GSP. It got a little bit congested up through Newark and Paramus, but not too bad.

Coming back today I didn't expect as much traffic, nor was there as much. So I was a little more adventurous. I got off 95 at Mamaroneck Avenue, and just drove to the entrance of Hutch South, took the Cross County Parkway to 87 across the GWB. Very very smooth and no delays really at all, except when I had to pull off the road in the middle of Yonkers to piss in the woods, because I just couldn't hold it anymore. If anybody saw that, I apologize.
