With a father in law enforcement I feel like I should already know this, but for some reason I don't. What's worse to be in, a federal prison or a state prison? What is tougher, etc.?

Also, is there a name for the places that all the wealthy "white collar" criminals go, in an official sense?

I think state is "pound me in the ass" prison.
I don't think it matters. Prison sucks all around. Fewer people are prosecuted criminally under federal statutes, and most of those people who are are prosecuted for white collar crimes - so you get the corporate set, crooked politicians, and mobsters/gang leaders, as well as people like the Unabomber and Timmy McVeigh. In addition, most of the people convicted in DC are outsourced to various federal prisons throughout the country, and they're pretty feared, I hear. It's a mixed bag with fewer people I think, but they're probably just as bad as state prisons. The federal white collar resorts are just minimum security facilities or called "camps" or "centers." They just look like big community rec centers with barbed wire around them.

State prisons parallel this largely, except that they don't get the big shot corporate people, by and large. Just generally petty thugs and not-so-petty thugs. I've been to Attica before. Not a pleasant place. I can tell stories. They have one wing where they keep the worst of the worst of New York State in cages literally because they're just that dangerous. It's only big enough for about 26 people I think, but those are your sociopaths, etc. Also, I think in NYS, the big maximum security facilities are Sing Sing and Attica, and I think together, something like 90% of their population is from 8 neighborhoods in NYC.

I always had the impression that State Prisons were indeed the rougher ones. Although, if you went to a Federal Prison you would probably not be coming out any time soon.

I think the worst prisons to be in are the secret ones in Europe. Or maybe the prison of the mind when the body gives out. But don't take my word for it! Just ask Stephen Hawking, comedic actor from The Simpsons:

"The universe may be infinite, but my range of motion sure isn't!" - Stephen Hawking, Actor.

First off, what you are in for. To address the one point, I'm pretty sure unless you made a special deal, most white collar criminals go into the same prisons as a violent criminal.

I would probably think, although more script and with more security, that a federal prison is better in terms of what most people fear. Being the lower funding and less compensated and less in numbers guard staff, I'm sure alot more of the things we hear about happen there then in a place where they are fully staffed.

On the other hand, in most cases, you probably did something alot worse if you are headed to federal prison for a non white collar crime, so who knows.

I don't ever want to be in any jail/prison/facility. The one hour I spent in a holding cell for getting into a fight was enough for me to know I wouldnt like it much.

Without going too much into it, I got to spend many of my mornings over the past year in the lockup at DC superior court (not as a prisoner) and I can safely say it is oneof the scariest, most unpleasant places I've ever been in my life.

I could be wrong, but I don't think federal prison has any parole, so you have to server your entire sentence.

state pens are far far worse than federal pens. but judges who preside over local districts are far more lenient in sentencing and take cues from your past criminal record so saying its a first offense actually means something. now in the federal system first time offense doesnt mean shit. as for the question about white collared crime and blue collared crime.... white collar criminals go to minimum security facilities. with other non violent offneders who are basically in a giant dorm, no cells getting to virtually come and go as you please around the prison.

but this what i questioned most of all, in county there is a ton of security you have to get through, in rikers its pretty much the sae thing, but once you go upstate they stamp your wrist fill out a form and your in. two different worlds for the same people.

I got a call from my buddy yesterday. The last time we spoke was before he started a 9 month stint in the county pokie. Had a few fights; won some, lost some. He said he was able to get by because of his vast knowledge of sports history/trivia. I think it was his fondness for Kool-Aid lidstick.

i did time for cultivation. and because of over crowding it sucked. i mean it would have sucked otherwise, but when you are in a block that is built for 12 people and they have 36 in there it is tense all the time. People steal your shit, dummies always making hooch and getting the whole block tossed. Not to mention the stories you have to listen to, oh and everybodys innocent. just ask em. there isn't much difference as a set rule between either. I had friend popped for acid that went to federal prisons and they didn't sound any different than state prisons, its mostly the security level that will determine how bad it is, and whether or not its a newer corporate prison or an older state run facility. I was lucky to know some people already there for a long long time, some never will get out, and i was able to get "j"s now and then (the main air return for whole facility was in my block, so it blew thru whole place when we smoked, hard to find who had it.) BUt as a rule Jail sucks balls period. When i walked in the door, immediatley the biggest blackest mofo threw paper at me and called me sweet-pea the whole time i was there. But thankfully i am funny/witty and can talk so i was ok, no probs. but missing the little things is the worst of all. Nothing like trying to get some spankin time with 36 of your closet friends with you 24/7. But for some who have nothing already, jail doesn't even phase em.

emPulse

I've been in four jails, but never a prison. My impression from talking to other criminals, is that it's nicer in a Federal prison. Federal prisons, however have no parole.

BTW... ever wonder why people get sentanced to a year and a day? From what I've been told, it's because, to stay in a municpal jail instead of a prison, you can only be there for one year max. Therefore, if you get a year and a day, you have to go to a prison.
