View Full Version : Dude... Where's my car?

It's in the tiny town of Culpepper, VA.

I drove my youngest son home from Winchester, VA to Charlottesville (about 85 miles each way). About 30 miles into the drive home, my car stopped. I mean STOPPED. I had heard a humming noise from the front end. I was pulling over into a driveway (very rural road) and just as I was at about 5mph, the damn thing stopped like I hit a brick wall. The engine was still running. I put it neutral and managed to coast into the driveway before getting hit by speeding trucks.

I couldn't see the house that the driveway belonged to and there were No Trespassing signs. I don't have a towing plan (but I sure as Hell am going to get one now). Fortunately, there happened to be a used car for sale in this driveway. I called the number on the window and asked where to get a tow. Turns out, the closest place that would tow after 6PM was in Culpepper (about 45 minutes away).

The used car owner drove up as I was on my cell w/ the towing company. Turns out he knows the towing guy, so he got on the phone, and told him I'm a good guy and to get right out there to pick me up. Yes... the guy tried to sell me his used car. If I had the cash, I might have taken him up on it. Mine is in better shape, but his runs.

So anyway... now my car is in Culpepper after a $115 tow, sitting on the back of the truck. It's 45 miles away from me (my father and oldest son came to pick me up). I'm heart broken, and soon to be deeply in debt. The problem is probably wheel barrings, but the tow guy says that bad wheel bearings should have been detected by the people who did my alignment last week. I hope it's not the transmission, or drive shaft. Damn, this sucks!!!! Not just for the impending bill that's to come, but I pride myself on the good condition of my car.

Sorry... I hate long posts, too.

Damn...

I'll be out of work for almost a week, and the final cost will be between 1K and 1.5K. The transmission is shot. That's actually a pretty good price, but it's a used transmission (not re-manufactured). At least it has a one year, unlimited mile warranty. This SUCKS!!!

Oh, well. My life has had worse moments than this.

it's a lot easier to replace a clutch, then it is a transmission.

Very true. Driving manual transmission also saves on gas. BUT it's a pain in the ass in stop-and-go traffic. I wish I had a dime for everytime my left foot went numb.

I have automatic now. I SO hope my transmission never goes.

The weird thing about mine is, other than the occasional hum on long trips in the past week or so, there was absolutely NO indication anything was wrong. No slipping or stuttering or anything like that. It was about as sudden as getting hit by a cement truck.

BTW... I'm bored as SHIT, not being able to work.

Not to make you feel bad. Lord knows how important a car is! But here is my Good Trans story!

One morning, I got into my car, and could not get past 1st gear! Actually, I was lucky to get into 1st!

I limped at 10 mph and 4000 rpm to my mechanic. Dropped the car, and caught a bus. I was expecting to pay at least a grand.

He called me about 2 hours later. "Were you driving during that sick rain storm last night?"

"Yes, I was."

"OK, I'll call you back in 10 minutes."

He called me back. I had a rusted clutch plate. He took it out, grinded it down, and charged me 50 Bucks!

The lesson here is, get to know a good mechanic.

If I had taken this car somewhere else, I could have been ass-raped!! For Thousands!!

My best tranny story(tee-hee) was when I bought a car off of a co-worker. I had driven this car plenty of times, with nary a sign that there was any problem with the tranny.

Didn't have it even one month, before the tranny just completely goes on me on my way home from work one day. Luckily, I didn't cause any accidents, and a cop came and helped me push the car off of the main road.

After two weeks of no work, the car is finally fixed. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and working tomorrow night. THANK GOD!!! It would have been done sooner, but last week the place called and said Motion Auto Parts sent the wrong damn transmission. I called up Motion and yelled at them until they knocked 75 bucks off the price.
