What a fucking shitball of music. So sappy, just fucking noise. Nothing there. When they try to rock, the fail. When they try to pull on your heart strings, it comes off as sappy shit.

Thank sweet baby Jesus that Ron hates that bullshit. That means we'll never have to hear it as music into or out of the show.

Thank you Ronnie, you rule.

Amen.

Ron hit the nail on the head when he said these "country" artists of today completely ignore what Waylon and Willie did in the 70's. They were considered outlaws and turned the country music industry on its ear by refusing to use Nashville studio musicians and record songs written by their "hit making" writers. They also refused to buy into any image, and that's when Willie grew his hair long and stopped shaving. Same for Waylon.

They wrote their own songs, used their own bands, and made some incredible music. To rock fans this may not seem like groundbreaking stuff but back then in Nashville it was revolutionary.

It's a shame some people only know the crap that is churned out today as "country" music when in effect all it is is pop music with a southern accent and some twang.

The second electric guitar I ever bought was a black Telecaster, and that's because it's what Waylon played. He and Willie were (and still are) huge influences on my musical tastes and I'll always love 'em. These pretty boy cowboy hat wearing phonies being foisted upon the public couldn't shine their boots.

There's a lot of country out there that's better than anything else on the radio. you just have to look hard to find it. Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, the old 97s, drive by truckers, the flatlanders, ryan adams, josh ritter, dan bern. . .

Granted, most of that is considered alt country, but it still counts

I agree with DarkHippie. As a matter of fact, just about everything on the radio is crap, be it country or rock. There's so much good music out there, of all genres, and very little of it can be found on regular radio.

PS... When I first saw this thread, I thought it said Ron hated MobCounty. I thought, Awe... poor guy.

If I wanted to listen to modern country, I'd download some Def Leppard and call it a day.

Real country music for all practical purposes died in the early 90s....

The problem today is there's too many pretty boys and pop garbage and its got no soul...I think the Dixie Chicks line in their song "Long Time Gone" really described it well:

We listen to the radio to hear whats cookin

But the music aint got no soul

Now they sound tired but they dont sound haggard

Theyve got money but they dont have cash

They got junior but they dont have hank

Like Hippie said, theres a lot of really good stuff out there, but you have to look for it...People like Dwight Yoakam, Bruce and Charlie Robison, Tift Merritt, Shooter Jennings, Hank III and etc. are all super artists that you won't find anywhere in the mainstream, which is really unfortunate, because their stuff is so great and full of soul and isnt like the drivel of what passes for "mainstream"

CMT and GAC usually have shows on their video channels that showcase videos outside of the mainstream for about an hour or two a day, and of course, theres always XM 12

modern country is so bad, I would rather watch Lucky Louie

I think the real point here is that somewhere along the line, mainstream country music lost is connection to the working class, which was the backbone of the entire genre as much as the concept of songs about Love, God, and Murder, and thats a damn shame, because country WAS the working man's music...it was never meant to put out songs like "Tonight I Want to Cry" and "Man I Feel Like a Woman", it was meant to put out songs like "Long Black Veil" and "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Crazy Arms" and "Hello Darlin" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today"...REAL songs about REAL people and REAL issues...not fluff noise that no one can relate to...Essentially, country has been reduced to background noise and dance music with songs you forget 30 seconds after you hear them

Perfect case in point....They don't even call their fan fair "Fan Fair" any more...its now the "CMA Music Festival"

Poor ol' AP Carter must be rolling over in his grave...

Not to be a whore, but to be honest I had no idea that 'classic country' was as awesome as it was until I got my XM unit. The shit is fantastic. And yeah, I don't know what happened with modern country, I guess we could make the same argument with rock music, for different emperic reasons, ie sappiness and lack of edge/originality respectively.

As the caller mentioned yesterday, XM12 is a great way to expose yourself to good current country music. Every once in awhile they'll slip in some old Willie or other classics and you don't even think twice about it, this newer stuff meshes so well with it. Anything in the "alt-country" or "cow-punk" genres I tend to be a big big fan of - even their magazine has a great title.

Hank Williams III, Old 97s, the Bottle Rockets, Steve Earl, Alejandro Escovedo Lucinda Williams, and especially local favorites Last Train Home, are all great. Would love to visit Austin one day.

This compilation from Bloodshot Records is maybe my favorite CD from last year:

The first track ("Blood, Sweat and Murder") just kicks my ass every which way, and for anyone who instantly thinks "Red State" when they hear country should check out the track "Burn the Flag" by The Starkweathers - really a fantastic double CD.

I haven't heard a lot of Last Train Home, but I LOVED the cover they did of that Dylan song "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You"

And of course as my good friend Houston Marchman says in "VietNashville":

Well I started pushing my songs and knocking on doors

Most everyday I felt more like a whore

A man said, "son, son you gotta write

For an 8th grade level divorced housewife

in Nashville," VietNashville

He said, "It's about money boy, money in the bank

Country ain't into no existential angst

Write for the cash, not for the soul."

Right then I knew man I's bound to roll

Outta Nashville, VietNashville
