I saw Superman Returns lastnight and was a little disturbed with the ending, Superman flying off to let Lois and her "boyfriend" raise his son. I also can't help but feel sorry for the boyfriend, Lois still loves Superman, and Superman still loves Lois, it's just a matter of time before this guy's left at the curb.

it's a movie. get over it.

I was going to try and lobby a locky on this, but I decided to respond since it is blatant spoiler talk.

In order to survive and have as normal a childhood as possible, Superman was given up by his birth parents and raised by the Kents. When he was old enough, his real father and mother revealed themselves to him through the crystals, and even though they were dead, they helped him.

Superman can't be with Lois and can't raise the child - he wants the kids to have as normal a life as possible, and Lois' boyfriend/husband isn't a bad guy. Superman may even see in him the qualities Jonathan Kent had. He also knows that one day, the boy will know the truth, and Superman will help him cope with it.

What he said by the kid's bedside was word for word the final words Superman's father (Marlon Brando) said to him as he put the baby in the spaceship at the beginning of the first Superman movie. I thought it was quite effective.

Besides that how do you compete with Superman. Yes, this guy is being played up as a great guy and a hero in his own right, but come on his chick's ex-boyfriend is Superman, that has to be bothing him.

At the end of Part 2, the one where she finds out Clark is Superman, didnt Clark give her a huge wet one and she "magically" forgot he was Superman ??

Yeah it makes no sense to me either. Kinda like the part where Superman throws that saran wrap S on the really big guy flying towards him.

You're right. Lois' memory was a bit inconsistent.

She (obviously) knew her kid was a super-baby but, then again...she has her memory wiped when she got the hypo-kiss at the end of Superman II. How would she know the kid doesn't belong to Cyclops??

I hate to pick nits during a movie about a guy that can turn the earth backwards but, still....gimme a LITTLE continuity!

Hey Doc,

Lois KNEW that the kid was half kryptonian. When Lex was approaching her child -while holding kryptonite- she appeared nervous. As if, even she didn't know if it would harm him.

She just wasn't acting like a normal mother at that moment. There was someting "off" about her behavior. So much so, that even Lex was inspired to ask the question "who IS that baby's father?"

Then again, Lex knew that Lois and Supes were in a relationship (Superman II) so, maybe he just put 2 & 2 together. Shit. I dunno.

I'm not too worried about how Lois looked during that scene. I'm sure she knows that Jason is Kal-El's son. Kate's not a good enough actress for me to worry about reading anything into that scene.

I was just wondering if Kyptonite has any affect on him, It doesn't hurt humans (at least short term, since it is radioactive, I'm sure it would cause problems over time) maybe Jason is immune.

I love the slow flying/floating/levatating stuff that Kal-El did in this movie. His Mama clearly says that if he wants to be with her, he has to give up his power to do so. That's why he is so incredibly horned up all the time he sees her - because he can't have her.

I tell you - as many holes are there in the first two movies, Singer and Company really covered their bases with this one.

ok AKA your making me go rent that damn evil second movie soon. but even if he shed his powers a) he changed genetically so his son couldnt have his powers, b) brodies second point about lois getting a tan and the baby being so strong he could kill her with his baby kicks would have to be true if (a) is false

I know this is out of left field , but what if all those drugs Lois has the kid taking are somehow affecting his Krytonian development, causing an immunity to Krytonite. Where she gets them I have no idea, but I find it hard to believe Superman's kid is such a wimb.

havent seen anyone mention this yet but what if the kid is a result of clark/supes and lois getting it on after he got rid of his super powers in the fortress of solitude in superman 2, wouldnt that make the kid just a normal kid with no powers at all ???

also in the 1st superman lex from seemingly out of nowhere associates a meteorite that fell to earth to be kryptonite and somehow knows that it can kill him ??? another problem i have is when lois is interviewing she asks him questions like is it true you can see through things, etc. we were just introduced to him how would anyone know those things yet

My feelings on Superman Returns: Blah...how disappointing this movie was. Superman used to stand for truth, justice, the American way, right? This new version, he just seemed like an obsessed, confused, creepy stalker -- complete with a little B & E. Just awful.

I found the film to be way long winded; when my son had to go to the bathroom in the middle, I didn't mind at all walking out of the theater for a few minutes. I knew I wouldn't miss anything important.

Lex Luthor's big master plot was, oh so weak -- What happened to the criminal mastermind? Ugh. I'm usually a fan of all of Spacey's work, but it was terribly flat to me. Maybe I'm tainted by Gene Hackman's Luthor, but I always imagined Luthor to have so much more bravado, to be more of a braggert -- just more flamboyant, for lack of a better word. Spacey just played him like a kook. He had a few of those head turning stares, which worked so well for him as the phychotic in Se7en, but not so here.

The kid, ugh, the kid, I think he's Haley Joe Osmond's retared little cousin. He had so few lines, but tons of screen time. Singer just seemed to keep him around as an ornament...just trying to force him into being an important part of the story, but there was never any emotional attachment at all to the character.

So, OK, check this out Superman goes away for 5 years and mysteriously returns (which was weakly played out on the screen, by the way). So how is Jimmy Olsen still a college aged looking kid with homo-erotic feelings for Clark Kent? And how is this 20-something looking Lois Lane, winning the Pulitzer, and a world reknown newspaper reporter? Please somebody name a famous newspaper reporter, other than Woodward & Bernstein (and I believe they're only famous because they made a movie about them) The casting was just so wrong for me -- everybody was just too young and pretty to be a believable part of the story.

The screen, sets, and CGI were weak, to me, as well. With the latest Star Wars, King Kong and recent others, I've grown to expect a certain standard for special effects. There was one scene in particular, when supes was flying with Lois, where the green screen effect was terribly distorted with artifacts. It looked like they used old film from the original Superman movie with Reeves. As far as special effects, there really wasn't any WOW factor for me at all.

All in all the biggest problem of the whole thing is just plain and simple really -- there was absolutely no action & adventure. Nothing of what the Superman story really is -- a fun, edge of the seat story where you really want to get behind the superhero who's saving the world from a super-villian. It was just an overtold story about, what seemed, a mentally challenged stalker who foils a terribly ill concieved and very uncreative plan to kill off the world or something, and get rich or something like that. ech. Oh and there's a half-tard kid in there too for some reason or another.

i agree that the plot was weak, and the kid was there i guess to add more tension betw supes and lois, and i guess also to make you wonder if its supes kid

i too liked hackmans luthor a lot better, and i guess since eveyone in the first 4 supermans seemed or looked like they were in their 30's we just got used to them as our ideals for the characters and know we have these 20 somethings, with the exception of spacey

I think the real problem with the new Superman movie is also what's wrong with the new Star Wars movies and that is: I just don't CARE about any of the characters.

Something has changed with movies recently. The audience doesn't get attached to any characters. When ObiWan got killed in Star Wars...people GASPED. They were shocked. When QuiGon died...did anybody give a shit?

When Lois Lane died in Superman, people couldn't believe it! It was unthinkable that Superman was not fast enough to rescue her. That was an attachment to her as a character.

Now...movies are made in such a way that, the audience doesn't care.

Maybe it's the crappy cartoony CGI effects. Maybe it's the product placement. Maybe it's the fact that every action movie is now a 2 hour commercial for the soundtrack and the video game. Whatever it is....the audiences are disinterested. And now they're introducing a Superbaby?! Whooo caaares?! Totally not needed to continue this franchise. Isn't it a bit early to introduce an "Cousin Oliver" to this new series?

Superman Returns has a MILLION unnecessary flaws. Stuff like that takes me right out of the movie. Either make a sequel or start fresh. Don't randomly pick and choose which plot devices can carry over from the first franchise to the new one. It's confusing and distracting. Again, Star Wars did the same thing. No continuity! If you're gonna go back to that universe, go back to that universe. If you're gonna change a bunch of shit...then make a spin-off or, god forbid, a whole new story.

I thought it was great movie - an excellent continuation off Superman II.

As for Superman-Lois Lane kiss at the end of the second movie, that kiss wiped Lois' memory of Clark being Superman, that is all. She still remembered that they got it on at Niagra Falls, if I'm remembering that right. Or it was just insinuated when her fiancee (James Marsden, who is in danger of being typecast as the nice guy who never gets the girl; see: Cyclops) asked her about her article "I spent the night with Superman".

And the kid - did you ever see more tussable hair?

The only drawback I thought was Kitty, Parker Posey's character, who was basically a rehash of Miss Teschmacher - works for Lex, loves the rich life, sees Lex is evil, falls for Superman, helps Superman - being the only difference is that she helped him without him knowing (dumping the crystals).

I didn't say she didn't know, I said that Superman doesn't know she helped him.

Odds are she is treated like a celebrety because of her perceived relationship with the most powerful being on earth - odds are, the rags have a field day with her and Supe. In Metropolis she could absolutely be that recognizable, especially with the assumption by the public that she and Superman are boyfriend and girlfriend. It will get even nuttier if they learn that Lois had his Super Baby

The bigger question is how she got thru that huge ass crowd? She find a cop and have him get her thru it?

I just saw "Superman Returns" earlier, and I must say I thought it was a great movie to bring back "big blue".

I'm amazed how much Brandon Routh sounded a lot like Christopher Reeve's version of Superman.

I did like the end of the plane sequence at the ballpark. Yes, it is a little cheesy, but I like that. And the fact that he gave the people in the plane the same qoute about "flying is still the safest way to travel" was great.

Did anyone noticed the way he hold the car, in the same way he posed in the action comics cover? I thought that was cool.
