Why did you elect Corzine anyway? Was it the whole union support thing? Because you had to know he was going to tax you back to the stone age first chance he got. That was his biggest M.O. in Congress.

Then again, I'm from a state that's about to elect Spitzer, who's just as bad.

I think its some Democrats (most in the assembly) that are terrified of raising the sales tax because of what happened the last time they did that. Florio was destroyed, Democrats lost control of the State House for a few years and the backlash was so bad that Bill Bradley almost lost his campaign for re-election to the US Senate, which had nothing to do with the state sales tax increase.

Personally, I think the backlash won't be that bad since most people in the state realize the budget situation is serious. But there will be some as there always is. You guys won't believe it, but Corzine's approval ratings are still in the positive, 50-46 at the last polling.

I live in Jersey and there is one thing I do not understand. Where the hell is the money going? I am tired of the high taxes. Mcgreevy imposed a millinares tax that raised taxes on people making a combined income of over half a mil. Where did that money go. The wonderful Gardenstate parkway isn't supposed to have tolls on it since the bond was paid off that was over 10 years ago where the hell is that money. I cannot for the life of me figure out why we are in a budget crisis. Hell they even rasied the taxes on cigarettes.Jersey will rasise taxes at a drop of the hat and it never seems to be a end. I don't like Corzine but respect him for standing up to Trenton but the dope is loseing money with lost wages, no lottery, and the casionos being shut down. Its the equivlent of being broke and decideing not to work anymore. Also raiseing the sales tax is dumb because alot of people from neighboring states shop in Jersey because the sales tax is lower then there state. you raise the tax there is no reason to shop here. Another fact is that Jersey tends to tax the higher class at a rate that caused them to moveout of NJ and there is more revenue lost. Trenton should make due with the money they have just like every other working stiff. (Patriotic music needs to be playing in the background to get the full effect of this post.)

Whatever solution to this problem, whether it be liberal or conservative, is going to be painful because of the huge size of the budget shortfall. It's either higher taxes or huge budget cuts, and in any sensible plan a combination of the two. The sad fact of the campaign for governor is that both sides were touting property tax reform and cuts when they knew full well that they could not put forth a responsible budget doing that. If you are to believe Corzine's plan, he is setting aside a portion of the sales tax increase for property tax reform later this year.
If you have a job, live in a house (own or rent) and occasionally buy stuff, you get fucked one way or the other.

I LOVE how whenever these discussions take place there's no real disussion about REAL SPENDING cuts. As if the state of NJ runs at maximun efficiency, and there's nowhere to cut. Which everyone knows is ridiculous.

I know both sides are talking about "cutting" spending, but those are usually cuts in the rate of growth of spending, or flatlining a budget. So in other words they spend a dollar now, and they were going to spend $1.10 next year, but now they're "cutting" it to $1.05. Or worse case scenario they'll actually break down and only spend a dollar next year. Try to run your houshold like that. You'll be bankrupt in no time. As usual, the greed of politicians with other people's money is endless.

You obviously
don't know what you are talking about. The debate isn't over whether to
raise taxes, but HOW. The only people who don't want to raise taxes are
Republicans, but nobody's listening to them.

Ding ding ding!!!

And those are the consequences of an election. Or as they say in Chinatown, an erection.

Now had you folks voted for a Republican, he would have made your grandchildren pay for todays problems, like they're supposed to.

PLease explain to me why one plan is any better than the other.

I'd say Corzine's is better because Norcross (or Roberts, whatever, essentially the same thing) wants to raise income taxes only so he can raise sales taxes later and use all of it to reduce property taxes. Property taxes are so out of whack here that even if a cut in those taxes are simply replaced elsewhere it will be worth it.

But judging just their current plans and none in the future, it just goes to a matter of preference. What ius significant here though is that whatever you think of Corzine's plan, at least for now he is challenging the current corrupt Democratic party establishment. There much more to do of course, but for now Corzine does look like he is trtying to change thing. Whether he is successful now in this current battle, or whether he is successful in the future, or whether he even continues to try and change things in the future is all up in the air.

New Jersey is really a microcosm of the nation at large, in reverse. Democrats control the government and seem invincible, despite a large portion being corrupt and mismanaging. Everyone is pissed, but the Republicans are hapless and put up lame candidate after lame candidate. However, things seem to be changing. Tom Kean Jr. is running for Senate and seems competent enough so far. And the last two major Democratic candidates for major offices, Jon Corzine and Robert Menendez, seem to be pretty clean.

It is really telling though that despite the national mood and the mood in NJ in particular regarding Bush and Republicans, that Kean and Menendez are running in a dead heat.

I really wish they would ditch this stupid rebate program and just take the money they use for that and just apply a tax cut. It's a waste of time and resources.

I have to disagree with your plan for ditching the rebate. I paid $10,000 last year in property taxes. I cannot tell you how happy I was when I got my "Property Relief" check.

Damn near 300 bucks!!! FUCK YOU!!!!

I voted for Forrester for mainly one reason. His 30 in 3 plan. I still am not sure where he planned to make up the shortfall, but he looked me in the eye and promised 30% reduction in 3 years. He also signed a pledge, and invited us to sign under his name.

I am still wondering how many of these ass hats would not be getting their pockets lined if they voted for the proposed budget.

Finally found a good list of the new taxes:

As of Oct. 1, plenty of other goods and services will fall under the
sales tax, including downloaded music, ringtones, movies and books.

Also
subject to the tax beginning in October will be: shipping and handling,
drapery and carpet dry cleaning, floor installing, contracted
landscaping, self-storage, tanning, massages, tattooing, magazines and
investigation and security services such as armored cars and alarm
systems will fall under it.

Limousines, except for those used in funerals, will be taxed, as will memberships in health, athletic and shopping clubs.

Whoopie. Even more expensive movie tickets. Gym memberships are going to be more money now as well. Glad they care about people getting healthy.

Some questions and an answers about New Jersey's new, $30.8 billion budget: Q. What about my property-tax rebate?

A.
Senior and disabled citizens will again receive up to $1,200, while
those earning less than $70,000 per year will again get up to $350. But
those earning more than $70,000 per year will see their rebates slashed
$100.

Yay, anyone making a living wage in NJ are going to get less in property tax rebates.

Rock on NJ!
