I got all 4 wisdom teeth removed on Saturday. The pain has been ridiculous and the painkillers they've given me make me puke. Well it's day 3 and the left side of my face is still all swollen up and throbbing. The right side is feeling better. For those of you that have had them out, when did the pain stop??? Everyone was telling me I'd be fine by now. Also, they were impacted so I had to be put under and the gums cut open. I haven't eaten anything in 3 days, I'm surviving on liquids only at this point

hmm, i ate a burger the day after i got mine out, so i dont know what to tell you. did they give you the big retarded icepak to wrap around your head? that really helped for me, as awkward as it was

no i have been trying bags of frozen peas though.. i am pretty sure i got a ghetto doctor. i just moved and he got me an appt to get them removed without me even seeing him before, i started to ask questions and he was like "OK youre going to feel really sleepy" and i was out.

the anesthetic/pain combo when i woke up made me cry like a bitch and they just handed us a tiny piece of paper with aftercare instructions and said "stop crying there are other patients here" and rushed us out of the office.

i would kill for a fucking burger right now, i can't even open my jaw all the way

I've had all four wisdom teeth removed at once but they were not impacted. The pain was minimal and I used one dosage for the pain and never finished the perscription. I don't think the pain you have sounds normal. Have you spoken with your doctor about it? Have you taken any Advil to help reduce the swelling? Don't hesitate and call another doctor if you can't find relief.

well, i called the dentist and got an answering service. Since they were impacted (growing in bascially sideways), they had to cut open my gums and dig deep in there to yank them out. I just want to be able to eat normal food, and right now, I look like I got punched in the side of my face, its so swollen

I had a root canal a few months ago, and I have to be honest, it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Only part I didnt like was the open hole in my mouth as they went through all the steps during the couple weeks.

But I've never had that many teeth removed. That does indeed suck, and I understand your point about the meds. They're not for everyone. I know people who get sick off them and they just can't do it. I think doctors are just used to over medicating people these days.

I had a root canal a few months ago and it was nothing. Totally easy. I think this dentist butchered me. I've set up camp on the couch with my laptop, cats and vitamin water. And we are having delicious barbque tomorrow which i will probably not be able to eat (italian sausage stuffed with fresh mozzerella and brocolli rabe mmmmmmmm)

back in 98 i had all 4 at once extracted, all were impacted completely sideways and pushing my teeth forward (assholes waited 4 years to take them out from the first time they noticied them, and pushed my bottom teeth forward) Missy mine hurt forever, they stitches didnt come out for about a week after the procedure and then i had solid food a little while after that so i was on all liquid or soft food for quite some time. they only gave me Tylenol with Codiene, so the pain was horrible i basically just used frozen pees to numb it and try to sleep for as little as i could get. When do your stitches come out?? After that i say you got about 2-3 days before normal feeling.
angrymissy
07-03-2006, 07:45 AM
they didn't even tell me if i have stitches or when they come out. I have a follow up appt on the 9th. They literally shoved a followup instructions piece of paper in my hand and shoved us out of the office.

i had 4 'impacted' wisdom teeth taken out when i was 15. i don't remember any pain killers because i was up all night in pain spitting blood and flem. the next day i was chomping steaks and eating pussy

nah that's a lie, i wasn't able to eat steak the next day....

HAHA thats awesome, you went to some crappy dentist man. I would assume you have stitches because they cut open your gums, i know i had them, i could feel them after awhile. Can you feel them in your mouth?
PhishHead

it also depends which way they were impacted, some people have impacted teeth but they are vertically impacted or distal impacted. Mine were horizontally impacted, which means basically sideways so the pain was more intense and severe. Meanwhile someone who has impacted, vertically it is not as bad because its just a normal tooth extraction.

my gums are so swollen that I can't feel anything (stitches). I think I was their last appointment before they closed up for 4th of july holiday. Fucking shitty dentist. I should have known... I called up for an appointment and they didn't even want me to come in for a consulatation. Then when I meet the doc, after xrays, he's like "so you want them all out today"... shouldn't the doctor be telling ME if I need them all out???

Yeah mine were horizontally impacted. They were basically growing sideways into my other teeth.

His office is closed today for the holiday. Hopefully I can get in there on th5 5th

You could always dump the meds and turn up the burboun.

Not to tell someone to drink pain away, but if you could remain somewhat buzzed for a couple days until the pain goes away, that wouldnt be so bad.

I had the same thing done, except over Labor day weekend a few years
ago. Almost sounds like the same dentist. I went in with no
consultation and he took out my 4 wisdom teeth. He then made me
leave before I was fully awake. I woke up in Sams Club waiting
for my scripts. (Which made me sick, so no pain killers for me)
eat normal food. Survived on breakfast shakes and oatmeal.
My teeth were nearly impacted, but only vertically. I could definitely feel all the stitches, and I could even feel that my gums felt....different. The only time I was really sick was coming down off of whatever they use to put you out, and I still managed to keep my stomach down. My face blew up big time, but I had some hardcore meds to control the pain, and I took them whenever I felt it in the slightest (and still didn't finish the bottle.) I had pretty much stopped bleeding and didn't need to use gauze at all by the day after.

The biggest thing now is to avoid getting dry socket. Because I've heard that can actually suck more than having them out.

I got two out and didnt have any complications.

I still kick myself in the ass for not getting all four of them pulled when I was in the Army and it would have been free. The military dentists loooove to pull wisdom teeth so they can get the experience for their private practices when they finish their military obligations.

As was stated previously..try to avoid dry socket at all costs. That is the most common problem when having wisdom teeth removed, and I have seen pretty tough grown men crying because they got it.

Check out this site for some preventative measures against it: http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/dry_socket.htm

I had all 4 out at once and 2 of them impacted. The key to my good dentist was *vicodin*. He sent me home with so much I really didn't care about the next 2 days. Sure I might have had a goddamn steak for all I know...but I couldn't confirm or deny for the life of me.

And of course I wasn't shy about self-medicating.

well missy I know how ya feel. When I was 19 I had not 4 but SEVEN impacted wisdom teeth. yes you heard right, I had 3 extra teeth. I had oral surgery on my mouth (which took 2 hours) and it took me over a week to recover. I went back to spring classes at my college only 3 days after the surgery, sat in the first class, after which I walked outside and puked all over the bushes. It'll get better in another day or two.

And if you DO swish I would say do not put anything with alcohol in your mouth because that will burn like a muther.

I had all four taken out, and two were impacted. It was the best

I had all four taken out at once, and it didn't even slow me down. I expected to be laid up for days, but I was eating semi-sold food again that night. I remember waking up in the recovery room like it wasn't anything and being alert and fine from there on out...no pain and very little bleeding. And trust me, this is not bragging...I'm a totaly wuss when it comes to blood and surgery, so I was terrified going in to the whole thing. But while I ended up fine, my roommate, my brother and another friend of mine all had horrible bruising and swelling, one got sick from all the blood, another was in bed for three days in agony...it hits everyone differently.

I wish I could help with this one. . .but I'm a genetic freak and only had 2 wisdom teeth.

And, by the grace of God, they were the two lower teeth, so no digging around in the upper jaw for me.

When I got 'em out it was during finals week, Senior year of college. I had maybe 2 finals and the rest of my classes wanted papers, which I'd already written. And I even stayed at school during the recovery period because if I hadn't, I would have killed Nana, Catherine and Sheepy within the week.

I don't know what kind of painkiller they gave me, but I know they did prophylactic antibiotics. I hate antibiotics, but those painkillers were strong! I spent most of the weekend asleep, until I got hungry. Then I ate mushy dining-hall scrambled eggs. . .ewww.

My oral surgeon didn't tell me to swish my mouth out with salt water. . .they recommended dilute hydrogen peroxide a couple times a day.

It's kind of a 20% peroxide/80% water solution and if you use warm water it feels a little tingly. But you have to rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards. . .and your tongue will feel weird.

If that's too gross for you, you should try Crest ProHealth Rinse, which is the alcohol-free shit and is at least minty.

Feel better, though. UPDATE:
I Still have all of my wisdom teeth.

However i did have a molar removed today. lost a filling and just didn't take care of it. then it abscessed and out it had to come.

I've been dreading the extraction. i thought it was going to be terrible. all in all it wasn't that bad. the cracking sound was the worst part.

I do, too. And that's a bad thing. I was told 8 years ago that I'd need two of them removed. Now the pain is getting pretty bad. Why was I too lazy to have it done back when I still had insurance?

Five years later, and I still have them. They don't hurt very often anymore, though.

I got all of them out about two years ago. I was put out for the procedure and in my wonderful drugged state asked if I could keep the teeth. They obliged and they sat on my desk in a little piece of gauze for about a week before I came to my senses and realized having dead teeth on my desk served no purpose.

I bled for awhile, which was the worst part. The taste of blood just made want to puke, but the vicodin helped greatly.

Mine are gone no as well, but the story is pretty f'd up how it came to fruition.

I had gone the xray route and all was good, they were in there but in fine position and as I was told should never be a problem. Well that is unless you CRUSH one by deflecting a puck into them yourself (a GREAT TIP by the way) in an effort beat a goalie on a hard slapper from the point.

The puck was just crushed low and to my right. The goalie was in good position so I angled into his vision while getting my stick in it's path with an angle to put it top shelf over his shoulder (he went down butterfly style). Well I made a great play to block the goalies vision and get a damn fine tip on the puck and actually scored on the play, but it went up too high and into my lower jaw before going over his shoulder and in the net.

The puck just DESTROYED the tooth in my gum and then HAD to come out. I'm convinced I chipped my jaw bone as well bc the pain was just unreal. The kicker is I wear a full cage and it just clipped my jawline under the cage. Actuall it kind of hit both, but most of the impact went into my jaw.

So I finish the game and then go to the dentist for xrays the next day and he said the tooth looked like it exploded in my mouth (some of the top had pierced through the top too. I remember trying to sleep with the pain and swelling, but still feeling a tooth piece back there as if I was about to start getting my second wave of adult teeth.

The dentist convinced me to just get the other side out (oh I only had 2 bottom wisdom teeth as well) too bc it may eventually be an issue. Since I had to go under due to the work to extract all the pieces, he felt we should just take care of it then. I did it and still played the next day and then made a bar nine event the day after. Anyone there got to see my stitches!
