Just saw the movie last night. Have a few obervations

#1. I think that all the actors stuck well to the characters. There was no change in mannerisms. They were the same characters we liked (or didn't like) from the 1st one. Johnny Depp kicked ass once again as Captain Jack Sparrow.

#2. I like the plot twist. Good semi-surprise ending. It had some laugh-out-loud moments that made you flash back to the 1st movie.

#3. I liked how it ended because you knew part 3 is next year. Already finished filming I think this is going to be a very successful movie franchise for Disney, even though it is based on a simple ride.

I predict it will make over 300 million. Special effects was amazing and the storyline was not too bad at all.

It is a little fast paced so you might want to pay attention or you might get lost a little quick. Yes I do realize I am saying this about a Disney movie.

It is about 2:20 long so.

And saw the preview for Rocky at this movie. Judgement is still out on that one.

I saw it and liked it. Fun flick, wish it was a little more self-contained. Solid flick, and that last half hour is really over the top.

And the movie is 2 hours, 30 minutes

I loved the LOOK of this movie.

Massive sets were actually constructed out of wood...not CGI. And, much of it was actually shot outside in the sunlight. (not on a studio set). It all adds to the realism.

The movie itself was a bit too long. In a way, it was too much of a good thing.

This dumb movie made $132 million this weekend, crushing the former record Spiderman held with $115. I do not understand the appeal at all.

The appeal of a movie like this is a no-brainer!

Chicks LOVE both actors and the romance storyline. Cha-ching.

Guys love the action, monsters, explosions & effects. Cha-ching.

It's got the Disney angle so, kids are definitely gonna go. Chaaa-ching.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much:

This is by definition a big summer movie, no doubt -- big in the grandest sense of the word, and moreso than Superman Returns. More action and adventure than it's summer movie counterparts.

Pirates had a kind of paradox to it, that felt odd to me. They tried to step up the story it seemed, tried to make it a bit more complex and more adult. As well, the intended audience seemed to be more adult as they showed people dying, had just had hints and jabs to more adult themes and sub-plots(not in a horney way, just more mature). But at the same time, the antagonist of the film, Davey Jones and his ship and crew looked so cartooney, almost goofy, to me more immature, as if intended for kids. In my opinion, they just went too way over the top with Davey Jones' appearence and would have done better to keep the film as either aimed at adults OR kids, not really both at the same time.

I think if I went in cold, having not read about it I might have been pissed at it's conclusion. But after reading the reviews, and seeing the film, I would say -- it definately had a "Luke, I am your father" type feel that left you with the understanding that this is only half of the sequel. I guess realizing that going in, I knew what to expect. Like seeing Kill Bill part 1, I knew that there was more to come and the conclusion didn't really bother me; instead it left me looking forward to part three.

Some of the things that I didn't like about the film were the hokey call-backs to Pirates one. They added sensless and out-of-place one-liners, seemingly only to remind the audience how much we all liked the original. It seemed kind of hack, but eh...it didn't detract too much.

But, said and done, I liked it...I will end up owning the DVD, and most likely watching this again and again. For some reason, there is an alure to the subject matter. This is such a rich part of our collective history, and there really is a romantic --for lack of a better word-- feel to the stories of pirates, and to the mythology of the sea. The Disney folks brought out so many of the truely finer points of this mythology and really seemed to capture the swashbuckler life on film, yet again.

the boys were talking on monday and were surprised how well this movie was doing compared to Superman and other movies. My guess would be Johnny Depp. The guy has great star power and appeals to men and woman (no homo) The actor who plays Superman i have never seen or heard of before. He did a great job but some people go with who they know...

I think this movie will make ANOTHER $150 million when it comes out on DVD.

I think there are people out there that heard it was a long movie AND the it had a massive cliffhanger ending and, ultimately, decide to just wait until it comes to Blockbuster.

I also agree that Davy Jones was torn between being really frightening and really cartoony. I mean, did we REALLY need to see our villain playing an organ solo with his beard of sea-snakes? Scenes like that kinda take the wind out of his bad-ness.

loved the first one in the theatre, bored to tears on DVD and cable

saw the second one yesterday, and i thought it was as good (or even bad as the first one) ... there didn't seem to be a lot of story -- it just seemed to be a series of setup scenes in the beginning and action scenes towards the end ... the twist was cool and it kinda peaked my interest for the third flick

saw it once, wasn't wowed & won't go out of my way to see it again

In or to avoid being a hack myself, I have to admit from the start that this notion was seeded, and firmly planted by a really funny, Philly/NJ comic Chris McDevitt who I post with at another board:

Also WARNING: Spoilers below:

The writers of Pirates 2 are definitely Star Wars fans, and at the very least they worship George Lucas, there are so many similarities to Star Wars, specifically Empire that it’s really striking -- pun intended. First off, Will’s objective in the film is to save his father from a life of servitude from the evil master, i.e. save him from the dark side. This is after his Yoda, the mystical oracle in the swamp talks to will about destiny. The father eventually sacrifices himself to save the son from the evil lord -- sure, not a theme exclusive to Star Wars, but still another similarity.

Jack Sparrow the pirate (similar type occupation to a space smuggler, BTW) who commands his beloved, the fastest ship in the galaxy, the Black Pearl, got this ship from the underworld, or undersea as it were. Because of his debt, he’s being hunted, and eventually backstabbed into a self-sacrificing act, after a passionate kiss, that leaves him as one of the cliff-hangers at the end of the film. We’ll have to wait until the next film to see if Luke and Leia…er…um Will and Elizabeth will be able to save him. I wonder if Davey Jones will keep Jack stuck to the wall at the end of the main chamber as his “favorite decoration“.

Elizabeth the rich daughter of a powerful political figure, is involved in a love triangle with the main two male protagonists.

Commodore Norrington (Lando in this comparison), seemingly a good guy, well at least honorable, backstabs his current employer to gain favor with the empire -- The East India Trading company.

Does Jack Sparrow’s time as god over the tribal natives along with his friends hanging from the bamboo remind anyone else of the C3PO and the Ewoks from ROTJ?

There’s also a lot of other little things that are just too similar, like the sword play/light sabers, Hammerhead from A New Hope. Although the sea-monster looked much like a giant squid, as you saw it’s mouth it’s circular mouth lined with teeth looked exactly like the sand creature at the beginning of ROTJ that Luke was almost forced to “walk the plank“ into. The soldiers now instead of working for the Governor are now working for the Lord Beckett of the Empire. Compare Davey Jones’ picture with that of th Quarren:

http://www.starwars.com/databank/species/quarren/index.html

Also while I’m at it, there were some other seemingly direct rips from other Lucas productions -- that chase scene on the cannibal island with the spears seemed directly from opening set-piece of Indiana Jones with the natives chucking spears and shooting arrows into the water. As well as the beating heart, outside of the body, from Temple of Doom, along with the ultra-high cliffs and the long drops of the crewmen…come to think of it a large water wheel rolling through the jungle strongly resembles a large ball rolling down the hill.

There’s probably other similarities that I’ve missed, as well as some of these are a bit of a reach, either way interesting.

So when Will and Elizabeth set off to save Jack from his inprisonment (same as ROTJ), I'll still be in line, as I thougt this was a fun film, even with all it's flaws.
