Just got back from Ninja in New York. The place was great, has anyone else eaten there?

From the moment you walk in the elevator door to be transported down to the Ninja village you are in a whole different world. We forgot for a while that we were in downtown New York. Each party has their own private booth / house / room thing instead of sitting in a large common room like you would find in your typical food eatery. From your table you really don't see much of anything as the corridors are long and narrow but ninjas are constantly running past and showing up in the shadows. The food is a fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and maybe a hint of American. The sushi was top notch and the wasabi was amazing. Oh, the wasabi. Instead of the horseradish mustard mixture that just about every single Asian restaurant in the world uses, Ninja uses real Wasabi root and grounds it up right at your table on a traditional sharkskin platter thing. I thought that was quite impressive. One dish was soup cooked at your table by an 800 degree rock and another was a grapefruit with a sword through it.

Expensive, about $100 a person, but worth it. Don't listen to the snobby reviews that complain that the place is an over priced theme waste of time. It's a lot of fun for anyone looking for some original food in a great setting.

Meh. The food may be good, but it sounds way too gimmicky for my tastes. Besides, I get my ninja fix from Ask a Ninja.

Looking at the menu it also looks like straight up Japanese fusion, ie,
Japanese with some french influence... I don't think I see the "chinese" and
"american" in it... which is good, because it would be silly to pay $100 a
person for a japanese themes restaurant which served chinese food. It may
have been fun and it may be good for the generic american palate, but if it's
going to cost over $100 a person, I think I'd prefer a review from someone
who knows their food a little better. On the other hand, I hear that the
Ninja restaurant in Japan is very popular... but you know how the Japanese
like their kitsch...

It's not like it's just a theme with nothing else going for it. The theme just adds to it all. The food was pretty high end. I just got a call from a co-worker who went to try it for himself, he's a total food snob and he said the sushi there was great and the sake menu was one of the most impressive he's ever seen. If you are a fan of food people should really give this place a shot. It's fun and not jus a worthless theme place.

Revered by some as the world's first special forces, some modern practitioners of budo ninjutsu argue that ninja were used primarily as spies, not assassins, and this appears to be borne out by some historical records.

need to pay anywhere near $100 a head for phenomenal - with real wasabi!
- sushi in the city.

I have been to real Japanese places and they all use the same horseradish stuff that you find in just about every single sushi place in the country uses. After having real fresh grated wasabi the difference really stands out. It doesnt burn at all and has a very mild flavor.
