Sex offenders in the neighborhood? [Archive]

A friend of mine moved into an apartment with his girlfriend a few months ago.  I checked out their apartment, and I was actually pretty jealous - it's a nice, clean, quiet apartment, with a decent amount of space and a pretty good monthly payment.However, he just found out that there's two level two (moderate risk of repeat offense) sex offenders living in the apartment complex.  This is apparently not general public knowledge, as he found this information just doing some random surfing on the sex offender registry. The apartment complex is pretty big - over a half-mile long - but my friend has been having some major issues with keeping windows and doors open at night knowing this information, and he hasn't told his girlfriend yet because he doesn't want her freaking out.  He has been debating going to the Management office and using this information to try and break the lease.  I'm not sure of the legality of breaking the lease just because a criminal lives in another building.  Is this possible? And should he try to get out of his lease, or just live and let live, especially given how nice the neighborhood is?

Not to get off topic Matty, but what websites are out there that tell you where sexual offenders and child predators live?  As a parent, I would love to know.

Fine, I'll get on topic. These laws are bullshit, and just cause exactly whats happening here. I wonder if there's a website that tells you if there are any embezzlers, mafioso, bank robbers, assault with a deadly weapon, etc etc people living in your building. Maybe somebody in your building killed somebody by vehicular manslaughter. Gee, I'd like to know that if I'm going to be driving down the same street as him every day. If I was a worry wart. Life is full of risks. Deal with it.

<a href="http://www.familywatchdog.us/" target="_blank">This site is tons of fun when it comes to knowing your neighbors.</a>Bottom line, BDC is right.  Criminals, major and minor, are pretty much everywhere.  You're only going to be truly free of them if you live out in the middle of nowhere.  I'm assuming this apartment is somewhere in the vicinity of NYC, yes?  Well, you're not going to get away from these kind of guys in a major metropolitan area, period.But let's say your friend moves...where's he going to go?  Granted, a sex offender living in the same complex is creepy, but what's the magical distance that makes it OK?  A block?  A mile?  10 miles?  Again, check out the sites listed in this thread and you'll realize that sex offenders are all over the place.  The most important thing to do is be aware.  Tenbats, your friend NOT telling his girlfriend is about the worst thing he can possibly do if he's actually worried this guy will try something short of actually introducing them to each other.  It makes infinite more sense to tell her, show her a picture if there's one on the sites, and make her aware.  That sends the odds of something happening plummeting to next to nothing and is MUCH better than keeping her in the dark in the big picture.

We already get photgraphed all over Manhattan, You get tickets from cameras where no cop was present, Bush is listening to phone calls without a warrant, asset forfieture, etc, etc. All to make us saaafe, as if there is such a thing. I've noticed that a lot of people, like a 22 year old who slept with a 17 year old - are registered as a Level 1 sex offender.  Personally, I think that's a little wrong - I remember a story about the same situation (slightly older guy sleeping with an underage girl) and had to register as a sex offender. He moved to a new apartment after he did his time, and started a new career as an auto mechanic.  Well, the parents in the neighborhood found out there was a sex offender in the neighborhood and FLIPPED THE FUCK OUT, nearly lynching the guy.......until his 19 year old wife came out.  The same person he slept with when she was 17.  With their newborn baby. Ooops. So yes, the registry fucks people who get caught on statuatory rape. But.. what about Timmenquendas?  He was a sex offender who was released and living with OTHER SEX OFFENDERS - and murdered someone.  Duncan was released - REPEAT OFFENDER AND TURNED INTO A QUADRUPLE MURDERER!  There's a lot of kids in the neighborhood.  While I wouldn't move out, I'd make damn sure that my kids would stay away from the buildings the offenders live in, and explain to them why.  THAT'S the purpose of the sex offender registry.  A lot of times, with violent crimes, there's not as many repeat offenses as there would be with sex crimes, because sex crimes shows a pure psychological problem, where drug dealing/armed robbery/etc. are not deep-seeded psychological problems with issues of repeat offenses if they are not closely monitored.

Example: Most armed robbers/dealers are the result of people needing money.  If you get mugged, you have to deal with the trauma of that happening, but you lost your money.  You file a police report, you move on with your life.   You lost your shit, but that's what insurance and good customer service at your bank is for.  Do you have any sort of IDEA the kind of psychological trauma victims of sex crimes have to go through?  There's a MAJOR difference between the crime subset. There's no NEED for an attempted murder/murder database BECAUSE THOSE PEOPLE ARE IN PRISON.

I went throught the Wendy's drive through yesterday. There was a guy working in there, and my only thought was, "Damn, that guy looks creepy". I just looked up the registry on the VA State Police site, and sure enough... He's on the list for having child pornography.The one's that really creep me out, are the one's that are listed for "Crimes against nature". Does that mean animal fuckers?

On the State Police site, you can put in your address, and have it show you on a map a bunch of balloons (like on that frapper thing). You can choose the home address, or their place of employment. It also shows you a photo, and says what they were convicted of. It's a good site, but it's really slow.
