Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett dies

Lived his last years in reclusive anonymity.

I'm betting there will be some strange tales of what he was doing if people start investigating.

That's weird. Last night I heard "Welcome to the Machine" on the radio (shocker, I know) and thought to myself "Syd must be about 60 now".

RIP You Crazy Diamond.

Not a floyd fan but it's always a tragedy when a brilliant mind/ear goes to waste. RIGHT?

Lord only knows what he has in the vault.

Syd

(fun fact: Syd Barret was very close friends w/ Glen Buxton, lead guitarist in the original Alice Cooper band, sad fact: Buxton died in 1997, he had a hard life too...)

w/out his artistic contribution, pink floyd became muzak 4 potheads...

I love the original Floyd. Barrett was one of those true geniuses who didn't have the benefit of the modern medical advances that could diagnose his problem. Guys like him and Brian Wilson may have been helped considerably by the current science if it was available back in the day.

I have loved this song since I was about 15:

Bike (Barrett)

I've got a bike. You can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings and
Things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I've got a cloak. It's a bit of a joke.
There's a tear up the front. It's red and black.
I've had it for months.
If you think it could look good, then I guess it should.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house.
I don't know why. I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I've got a clan of gingerbread men.
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men.
Take a couple if you wish. They're on the dish.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I know a room full of musical tunes.
Some rhyme, some ching. Most of them are clockwork.
Let's go into the other room and make them work.

However, the fact that they DID NOT get help - may have been what made their creativity more brilliant. could've been like a wet blanket being thrown on a candle.

It's weird & frightening how some of these guys do what they do, are really great at it, then stop usually due to some stress related mental illness.
Huge fan of both...but Brian Wilson has actually been able to conquer way more of his demons than Syd Barret. SMILE actually does rule! Its a sad loss but the truth is, Syd gave us Piper at the Gates of Dawn and checked out on his own terms. Crazy crazy terms.

Look at the sky, look at the river...isnt it good?

Bobo brings up a good point. Kinda makes me think there MAY BE something to the ole crossroads curse of Robert Johnson.

Tho Syd was not taken at the age of 27, I still think there is some kind of weird connection between truely gifted musicians/ writers such as he ...as well as other types of artists.... and being cursed and or troubled.

WHY are all the greats fucked in the head?

considering the lengthy list of dead at 27, is it pure coincidence, or curse?

Robert Johnson/ bluesman / poisoned
Jimi Hendrix / Jimi Hendrix Experience / overdose
Janis Joplin / Big Brother & the Holding Company / overdose
Jim Morrison / The Doors / heart attack
Kurt Cobain / Nirvana / suicide
Brian Jones / The Rolling Stones / drowned
Chris Bell / Big Star / car accident
D. Boon / Minutemen / car accident
Jimmy McCulloch / Wings / heart attack
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan / Grateful Dead / alcohol
Gary Thain / Uriah Heep / overdose
Jason Thirsk / Pennywise / suicide
Al Wilson / Canned Heat / suicide
Wallace Yohn / Chase / airplane crash
Les Harvey / Stone The Crows / electrocuted
Johnny Kidd / Johnny Kidd & the Pirates / car accident
Helmut Koellen / Triumvirat / (accidental) poisoning

I read he spent most of his time tending to his garden and painting. And shunned fans and the media.

He was a brilliant man. I'm not sure if drugs caused his downfall or if they just aided in his descent into mental illness. I just hope his last years were full of happiness and peace.

But let's celebrate him and his talent! My absolute FAVORITE Syd song, Love You:

Honey love you, honey little,
honey funny sunny morning
love you more funny love in the skyline baby
ice-cream 'scuse me,
I've seen you looking good the other evening

Oh, you dig it, had to smile just an hour or so
(are) we in love like I think we be?
It Ain't a long rhyme.
It took ages to think
I think I love it in the water, baby...

Honey love you, honey little,
honey funny sunny morning
love you more funny love in the skyline baby
ice-cream 'scuse me,
I've seen you looking good the other evening

Flaking you are an nice little one
to put it all around, its just good
I like it, hey hey hey
S'pose some time that day
we'll be swinging along over across to me

Honey love you, honey little,
honey funny sunny morning
love you more funny love in the skyline baby
ice-cream 'scuse me,
I've seen you looking good the other evening

Goodtime rocker woman we'll stray our pieces
little creepy we shine so sleepy,
so whoopee!
That's how you look...

Honey love you, honey little,
honey funny sunny morning
love you more funny love in the skyline baby
ice-cream 'scuse me,
I've seen you looking good the other evening

This song makes me smile everytime I hear it. It has so many good memories attached to it. I think that is what every artist wants.

To me, he's always been the JD Salinger of rock, with the mystery of his life after success. When I was a bike racer, I always sang "Bike" in my head, while out on the road. It made for a good mental mantra during those long stretches of isolation.

He also supplied me with a good joke for one of my brothers (who's middle name is Eugene), many years ago. He accidentally cut his foot with a chainsaw, so I would say "Careful with that chainsaw, Eugene".
