I've been in the direct marketing field for about 9 years now. I kinda just fell into it. I have a degree in psychology, but I couldn't pay my bills on the awful salaries I had when I first got out of school. I became comfortable for the most part because my bosses have always been really cool and I was left alone and was able to pretty much do as I pleased. Work got done, clients were happy. But an office job is just not my bag. To have a job for the rest of my life that I couldn't care less about is just too depressing to me. I've made changes over the last few years in which I eliminated things or people that helped contribute to my misery. I also finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up…a massage therapist. I'm currently enrolled at the Swedish Institute and I absolutely love it. I'm so excited about this. The only thing now that is holding me back is this job. I thought I'd be able to stick it out for another year or two while I'm in school, but I figure, why be miserable if I don't necessarily have to? I really don't want to work in another office, but I would love to maybe get a receptionist job at a spa / therapist's office so I can get my foot in the door, but I'll probably settle for another office job, knowing it'll only be a temporary thing until my actual career as a massage therapist takes off.

So, are you a student, or are you working. If you're working, do you consider it a "job" or a "career?" And, are you happy?

Jennie - I've had a variety of jobs in my 42 years of life, eventually ending up where I am right now in the online Medical Market Research industry. I'm happy here because the people here are cool and they let me do my own thing. In return, I work hard and sell a lot of projects for them. I've never had a real "career path" in my life (the curse of being an English major) but have always managed to pay the bills and keep a roof over my head. I never wanted to set the world on fire and become some middle management asshole who gets hard at the thought of a promotion and a new job title.

My job is just what I called it - a job. It is a way to allow me to be able to provide for the people I love and to give me the $ to be able to make sure that they are happy. In return, that makes me happy. People say to me "You could be a better VP of Sales than the current VP - why don't you shoot for that job?" No thanks. I just want to do my job from 9-5, go home, play with the kids and love my family.

I'm rambling somewhat but what I guess I'm trying to say is that you should find something that makes you happy but don't let it be the whole reason for your being. You are not defined by the job you have.

I am 26 years old and I am now in my second Financial anlyst position. I am working at a hedge fund and the money is decent but I really could care less about what I am doing. It does not interest me at all. My fiance is in the same industry and the same boat in terms of opinion about her career. She is even more dissatisfied with her career because she has always been one of those people who can not leave work at work, fortunately for me the frustrations I have here, stay here.

Anyway, we have a plan which is probably not going to work in reality but we hope when the time comes we have the balls to at least try. We are saving as much as we can now and in two years we plan on selling our apartment and quitting our jobs. Our dream is to live and run our own restaurant in Martha's Vineyard. We realize that most businesses, especially restaurants, fail and we do not intend on trying to open some place right away. We want to rent a place and work in the industry for a year and not touch our savings, and then from there decide if it is feasible to make a place work. If not, we move back to NYC and rejoin the finance industry a year later, neither of us will even be thirty by then so I do not think we will be behind the eight ball.

In reality, this may never come fruition....but for now, it gets us through the days to have a goal.

I am the Director of Residence Life and a Judicial Officer for a University in the DC area. It pays very well, and is a lot of fun. I have been in the field 7 years. In grad school I had an assistanceship that payed my way through school. Nothing beats a free masters, well maybe doing 2 chicks at once, but whatever. Hopefuly in a few years I will take over some more departments and move into a Dean position.

Like Mr. Snow my job allows me to play online through out the day.

Well after getting a B.S. and a M.S. in Marine Biology (what the hell was I thinking?), I decided that I like sports much better and for the past 18 years I have been employed as a Sports Information Director. The money isn't great (but a good perk is free tuition for spouse/kids which my wife already has taken advantage of with a second master's and she's now working on a PhD and hopefully the kids will take advantage of it) and the hours can really suck (lots of nights and weekends) but I have blast doing it and I can't imagine myself doing anything else so i guess you could call it a career.

I barely made it out of High School and went to work for Pizza Hut, became a store manager by the age of 20 and the Father of 2. I worked for Dominos Pizza for some time and my marriage hit the shitz. After my ex took the kids and moved back home, I fell into a huge alcohol and drug trap that sucked me down like a whirlpool. I then had the bright idea to move to Florida, the last place you want to be when you are running from a drug and alcohol addiction. It was there I sold Kirby Vaccums door to door and Insurance while working at a Lobster House near Disneyworld. I took BIll Murray's cue and joined the service primarily to get straight. I wound up in the Army served my time, saw foriegn lands, took up arms in defense of my country and was a better man for my experience. I worked as a bouncer in some Bars and nightclubs along the way. I worked in Tampa Fla during the same time Ron and Ron were giants there. Little did I know that our paths would cross again. I came back to NoVa after my time was up and found work as a bartender, club manager, then a Chef/ more like a cook (sorry ESD) a beer truck driver and then managed a club again. I broke a vertabrae in my back and was laid up for months and rediscovered RNF when they were on very late at night. After I could walk upright again I took an internship for the RNF show, JDubs of Hideout fame was the one who gave me a chance. JDubs nothin but love for you man, you are the best. I knew that I needed to change my life and get away from the booze or life would be just a series of relapses. After RNF and The Hideout I went to work at XM. I had a lingering Vicodan problem that was a result of multiple surgeries and a really bad staph infection and taking way too much for way too long. I beat that only to realize how much I missed the boys. It was then I realized that the RNF show was special and I did not have the desire to work in corporate radio, just for them. I had been developing a BBQ catering following and decided to follow my dreams once more, so I pursued being my own Boss. Now I am on the verge of opening up the first of what I hope to be many BBQ locations. I want to compete on the BBQ circut and will be making the journey to Memphis in May next year. I have found that money, while it does buy you nice things, is not the root of happiness. As long as you are cool with the person in the mirror, things have a way of working out. I know this sounds more like this is your life, but sometimes I wonder how I got from Pizza Hut to here. I feel like I am in group. Love you all, even the crazies.

This is a great thread, and is making me feel better about some of my decisions so far. I hope to someday prosecute, and that's the reason I went to Law School, but it's easy to second guess yourself when everybody goes and works cushy firm jobs making ridiculous loads of cash. I have no problem with the loads of cash, but I'd never be happy doing that kind of law. So for me, hopefully, it'll be way less cash doing something I adore. I just have to get hired first (since most prosecutors offices don't hire until you pass the bar.)

I have a job. The pay is ok, the bennies are pretty good, and I am system administrator.

Mainly, I take the clients submissions, and get them ready for print. I have a handful, who are just masterful. I can get them ready to go in about 5 minutes. Then check here for about an hour and still be able to justify my time. If you check who's online between 7:30am and 4pm, I am a constant.

Then I have some asshole, designer-wannabe's, who will send a Quark with no fonts, no pictures and an impoper layout, and it is my job to make it look like gold. IN 1 HOUR! I can usually pull it off. I am good at what I do. There is a level of stress with the deadlines, but I almost always come through.

My commute is 5 to 10 minutes. A plus! I am SA, so I have dummy e-mail accounts, unlimited downloads, unfiltered net access all day long. I can listen to XM while working, which is nice. Sometimes, if it is slow, I can go over to the shop and schlep cartons of paper for a while. Keeps me fit and trim!

Bottom line. I've got a tolerable job, flexible hours, enough money to pay for my over taxed house.

Is it my dream job? Not by a long shot. But at this point, I am not in a position to stake my claim. Too much on the line with the house, the wife, the kids. I can't afford to be without a paycheck.

Since my last joke went over like a car crash I'll get serious. I graduated in 1980 and was told I had some acting chops, so I went to Nassau Community College (on Long Island) to study acting (don't laugh, one of my classmates was Eddie Murphy, who stayed there for a month, then got hired for SNL). When I left there I bummed around off-Broadway for a few years not making any money. I survived as a stock runner on Wall Street. Since the acting thing was going nowhere, and I had gotten married, I began working full-time in the securities industry. After four years of marriage ended in an amicable divorce, I decided to go back to school for art, so I went to The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. Their view of art and my view ended up being vastly different, so I left there and started selling copy machines on Long Island in 1986. I also started doing radio work at Hofstra University (WRHU) with some buddies who actually paid to learn radio from the school, while I was getting a free education. I decided radio was the life for me, so I started working at small stations on the east coast, WLIR and WGBB on Long Island, and WVLT (Mix 92) in Vineland, NJ. When I realized that radio was not going to afford me the lifestyle I would require (like being able to pay the rent). I started working for an Evironmental company in 1988, selling enviromental waste clean-up services to large manufacturers and industrial companies. When that company (Safety-Kleen) made the Fortune 500, some of the top administrators decided that embezzling funds was the way to go. Unfortunately they were caught, the company went into bankruptcy and I left in 1992 to work in a more stable union job (Food Service) in New York City, Where my late night deliveries introduced me to Ron and Fez dot Net. Being re-married, and now with two children I decided I had to get my act together. I've been with the food service company ever since, now as Director of freezer operations. I also went back to school a few years ago for Computer programming/Networking (Earning a BS with a 98.6 GPA). I do networking and computer repairs on the side. I also do an editorial cartoon for three local Long Island papers. I am a survey crew chief. I work for one guy who owns the company w/ 3 other employees. I do some land surveying but my main job is construction surveying. I get to tell all the construction workers where to build their stuff. A little stressing at times, but very challenging and a lot fun, different jobs all the time. The pay and vacation time is good, but the insurance sucks. I get to set my own hours but sometimes it's too many, the boss' office is at his house, my office at mine and sometimes I'll go for weeks without seeing him.

I've been working for UPS since I turned 18...thought it was just a great job while I was going to college, but I never figured out what I really wanted to do for a living...and I still havent...I'm still here...don't know how I lasted this long, but the money, job security, and especially the benefits and pension(they pay almost $13/hr just for that) are too good to go anywhere else...I'm more than half home to retiring(I'll be fully vested at 48)....but it is a godawful place to earn a living...they work the shit out of you, my back is destroyed, and they treat their workers like shit...the only good thing about it is that its a union shop(Teamsters)...They don't really fuck with me anymore, and its sad to say that its come to a point now that I am pretty much only looking out for myself, but its the only way I mentally can make it through the day...I know the job market isnt the greatest out there, so I count my blessings...It helped when I finally took responsibility for putting myself in the situation that I'm in now, and not bitch about it all the time...I made my bed, I have to sleep in it...But even if I do finish my last year and change of college, I still don't know what the fuck I'd want to do....Oh well, only 17 more years until I qualify for the Senior PGA Tour...So I got that going for me; which is nice.

Ten years ago, I was working at a job that gave me a bit of a leg up in getting something like this exhibitied. Not only don't i have that now, but the times have really changed - very competetive and such. I've sent it out to a few festivals, and there are will continue to do so, but everytime i fill out the submission forms, and send in the check, I get to thinking, "Filmmaking is for suckers!"

It was this thought that got me asking questions with other peeps here in NoVA, and after some brainstorming and handwringing, as well as some naysaying, I decided to go back to my experience working in rep exhibition and try and pull off a festival. Since that time (I worked several fests in DC back during the 90s), I have had a lot more marketing, PR and event planning experience, so much of this is actually coming pretty easily for me (right now).

The initial plan is for something big next summer - "independent" is dead - "underground" is the new independent. With a DC Underground Fest already established, I had to look at other models and I think I found something that could actually fly - but I needed to see if it could happen, and if ultimately it would be worth my time.

Hence - my longer than standared sig pic, which is also a banner (thanks Jon & Mikey), which is what I'm 100% focused on right now - THE SPOOKY MOVIE FILM FESTIVAL. This is my test balloon / canary in a coal mine. If things don't play out like I hope they will, the venue will let me cancel it out with no damage, which is great. I've got some really cool people helping me, and if we reach my second level of financial goals with this, we are going to have some reachh exceptional things going on. At least 3 theatres are signed on for various events - maybe a 4th (only one is linked right now). It's all very nerve racking and exciting and pretty much the only thing i think about anymore - asleep - awake - whatever.

IF THIS WORKS - we are going to try and pull off a Documentary fest in the winter - and then really build off of all that to pull off something very cool and very unique - to DC - by this time next summer. NOT EASY, considering that last year there were over 100 film festivals in the DC metro area. At the very, very least, I'm finally getting hooked back in again. Hopefully by then, Suggums, you and Mojo can have a place to screen your no-budget homage to "Chuck and Buck."

OTHER THAN THAT - for a living I do what I can piecing together various communications contract work - government, non-profit, for-profit and (these days) even the church. I have a lot of things that i do that i don't get any dough for, which is annoying, but at the same time is fine - I often worry that if I did follow my bliss, and I got paid for it, that I would ultimately regret that something i did because I loved to would simply because something I did because I had to.

I'm the Parts Manager at a RV dealership near my house. I started as a cleaner there scrubbing dirty RV rentals a little over 2 years ago and have moved up the ranks pretty quickly. WE have 2 buildings and I work with the mechanics down in our service and parts department. We have a large warehouse for service and a store front for selling shit. I am in charge of keeping the store stocked, finding parts for customers, a lot of customer service, a lot of online research, a lot of phone work and a lot of warehouse activities. I also am in charge of grilling when we have cook outs.

I like my job and it pays fairly well. What I really enjoy is it's equal parts blue collar and white collar. One minute I'll be searching online for something in an old trailer or talking a customer through a problem on the phone and the next I'll be helping a delivery guy offload a truck or removing an old washing machine from a motorhome. Since it's not an office the atmosphere is extremely laid back in the garage and back room, and we get to know our customers pretty well and joke around with them. And I still get to joke around all day with my co-workers, which is the part I missed from my old carpenter's job. Well that and I was making $29 an hour, but that was fucking crazy money and it's gonna be a few years before I can even think of making shit like that again.

I work at a utility company and when people want natural gas and are over what the state says we allow, I determine the charges and inform the customer. If the customer decides to go ahead with it, I send then an invoice and paperwork to start the process. Once they send me the money and paperwork, I give it to someone else to generate a work order, while I create their account and register that their money has been received and I forward it off to accounting. While I am doing this I am also fielding calls from plumbers who are trying to set up meter sets and also setting up a queue of prequalified leads for our sales group to contact customers that they were unable to determine if gas was available and at what cost.
I also work on special projects and support a few other groups at the same time. I also research and claim jobs that are indicated to have been complete. I use several kinds of maps and software and make in and outbound calls and I also cold call some people. I try to steer unprofitable jobs into a profitable zone. I use charts to determine capacity of existing customers and figure out if what they have is sufficient for what they are telling me they need, and if necessary, begin the process of our construction department to go out and change the size of existing customers gas services to handle a larger volume of gas, and we charge them for it, and suprisigly, there are many people willing to pay to use more of our product!
I also make judgement calls and grant incentives when I see fit. I exist in kind of the netherworld between the marketing department and the construction department and the accounting department and customer relations. I love it!

I design and layout newspapers. Our small company (5 people) puts out a huge
variety of newspapers a month. I've been with the company since my boss
started it 10 years ago and it was just me and him for the first 3 years. Back
then I worked my ass off to keep the company going, and now reap the
benefits. I show up when I want, leave when I want, work from home often
and get paid pretty well. As long as I get my jobs done, my boss doesn't care
what I do. I guess he feels he owes me. And I still enjoy the work. I got into
this career because I was interested in it and enjoyed it--not for the money.

I run the parts dept. at a Ford dealership. The good part is I'm on the road a lot, so I can hear the buddayys.

Hey guys and gals,

I haven't posted here in a long time due to the job that I have. I'm a flight medic for the police department. Do I like it? Hell yeah! you never know what your going to see out there and if you see me, it means something serious. Nothing like scrapin' people off the pavement!

The only thing that sucks about the job is that I'm always on call and live off of my pager. it can go off during dinner, dropping a deuce, busting a nut, anytime. Sure the pay is excellent, but the timing sucks sometimes.
