<p>As hinted on O&A this morning, CBS radio cut 150 jobs nationwide yesterday, Wednesday 7/12.</p><p> </p><p>Among the unemployed is the VP/GM of WCBS (Jack-FM) here in NYC, along with the PD of WJFK, Greg Gillespie.</p><p> </p><p>
</p><p><strong>R&R</strong>
has confirmed the elimination of dozens of positions
at CBS Radio, including the departures of KROQ/Los
Angeles VP/GM Trip Reeb, WCBS-FM/New York VP/GM Chad
Brown and WJFK-FM/Washington PD Greg Gillispie. According
to an internal memo sent to employees today by CBS
Radio Chairman/CEO Joel Hollander, the layoffs are
part of an initiative "designed to manage costs
as we move to reshape and restructure our radio group."</p>
<p> Admitting that "reducing headcount is never
easy," Hollander assured the company's staff
that the elimination of reportedly 115 positions nationwide
"is an altogether necessary step, one designed
to ensure our competitiveness and position us for
future growth in a changing business. While any number
of such cutbacks is painful, today's move affects
a small overall percentage of CBS Radio employees."
Hollander added that he does not anticipate additional
layoffs at his company.</p>
<p>Hollander continued, "The radio business is
changing, and we have to change with it. There is
increased competition for our listener's attention,
and we must deploy our resources wisely and aggressively
if we are to succeed and grow. Across the nation,
we are responding with programming and format changes
at many of our stations, and working to bring our
message to our audience with expanded and creative
marketing initiatives."</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>A lot of heads also rolled in San Francisco.</p><p>What's weird for me is that, for some reason, as part of these cuts, a Promotions Assistant was let go. Now, I can understand getting rid of a lot of big salaries who were underperforming, but a Promotions Assistant who was MAYBE making 25K a year?</p><p>Damn.</p><p> </p>

San Francisco...does that include Rick Delgado? Or does he no longer work for CBS radio?

<p>Suprisingly, talent and producers got off lightly, from what I can see. A lot of the people who were let go were management types. The talent that was let go was mainly big-contract guys who were underperforming, like three oldies jocks who were on their HD-2 channel in Chicago.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

memo from JOEL HOLLANDER tells employees "as you may have heard, this
afternoon we gave notice to a number of our colleagues at CBS RADIO.
This step is part of an initiative designed to manage costs as we move
to reshape and restructure our radio group. Reducing headcount is never
easy, and as we do so, I want to assure you of several things. First,
this is an altogether necessary step, one designed to ensure our
competitiveness and position us for future growth in a changing
business. While any number of such cutbacks is painful, today’s move
affects a small overall percentage of CBS RADIO employees, and I don’t
anticipate additional plans along these lines. <br /><br />"As I said, the
radio business is changing, and we have to change with it. There is
increased competition for our listener’s attention, and we must deploy

changes at many of our stations, and working to bring our message to
our audience with expanded and creative marketing initiatives." <br /><br />HOLLANDER did not specify the number of employees headed out the door, but <a href="http://today.reuters.com/investing/financeArticle.aspx?type=bondsNews&storyID=2006-07-12T191210Z_01_N12345406_RTRIDST_0_MEDIA-CBS-UPDATE-1.XML" target="_blank">REUTERS</a> reports that the number is approximately 115 of the company's over 8.500 employees.<br /><br /><strong><u>Confirmed departures include</u>: <br /></strong><br />-- CBS RADIO President/Programming ROB BARNETT <br />-- Adult Hits WCBS-F/NEW YORK CITY GM CHAD BROWN <br />-- Alternative KROQ/L.A. <p> along with the PD of WJFK, Greg Gillespie</p><p>It's funny how little I know about WJFK since R&F and The Hideout left. I have no idea who Gillespie is.</p><p>On a side note... Massive layoffs can be pretty damn risky. Sure, it's needed sometimes. But I'd be willing to bet, most companies that take this route, end up tanking. Though I don't listen to regular radio anymore, I hope it works out for the company and the people who lost their jobs.</p>

Well, that may not be so bad, then. I've always had the opinion that the whole "Free Fm" thing was a stupid idea, and I still can't understand the logic behind the Jack format. The only times I hear a Jack station are while I'm in my store. All I can say about what I've heard on Jack is, it is a terrible mix of music styles. The Hispanics seem to like it, though.

Please tell me that they didn't let "Jack" go. I listen to the station just for his hilarious one-liners.<img src="http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/help.gif" border="0" />

I think that the whole industry is changing, I know in Pittsburgh, Clear Channel let go a Morning personality because his contract was up, and I'm sure that we have heard about ManCow. The problem with Commercial radio is in a real slump many because they only have playlist of like 100 songs that they play daily. With the internet and such it is time to target big money makers and start promoting any artist that actually has a good song. It is time to let programmers be programmers and not not just someone who talks on air and plays what they are told.<br />
