dear oracle,

i was at my ex's place last night and there was a bat in the house. i freaked out like a little girl but after one swing and a miss i got it with a nice overhand volley. i put it in a plastic bag, and she called animal services today so it can get tested for the rabies.

has anyone had this experience before? i slept there the night before, do i have to potentially get rabies shots? and how many?

thanks folks.

signed,

scarrdied bat

What the hell are you doing spending the night your ex's?

And I think you will only get rabies if the bat bit you (or frech kissed you).

If the bat is tested and found to be rabid, you probably have to get the shots, evedder. Bat bites are tiny and almost undetectable so you'd have to go the "better safe than sorry" route.

The good news is that they no longer administer the painful stomach shots for rabies. It's a series of 7 injections in the arm now. About half of one percent of bats tested wind up being rabid, less that skunks or raccoons. They're actually amazingly useful and interesting creatures.

about 10 years ago a bat got into our building at work and was on the 1st level . we have long corridors and i was in the hallway and the bat was flying right towards me. all i can think of is the bat in 'Abbott & Costello Meet Dracula' flying as the wolfman jumped and grabbed it and they fell to their death together on the rocks below...

I've had to chase two bats at a time, two years in a row. The first year, I fatally injured one of them by accidentally slamming a door on it. Both of these incidents took place around 2AM, and almost exactly one year apart. No bat sightings, since.

Don't worry too much about rabies. Rabies in bats is much more rare than most people think.

My parents have a bunch of bats in their attic and the exterminator can't do
anything about them until September because they are endangered and summer
is when they're having babies--some environmental law. Meanwhile, the bats are
covering everything in the attic with 3 inches of poop and ruining it all.
