Two thumbs up.

Audience was applauding at the end of the movie, and no, not because they were happy it was over.

Not sure why all the critics hate it, it's a simple little kids movie that was fun to watch and had a great ending.

Who else has seen it?

The Wall Street Journal Destroyed this movie. I don't usually go by reviews though.

I'll save judgement for if/when I see it.

The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite,
held Excalibur aloft from the bosom of the water to signify by
Divine Providence ... that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur ...
That is why I am your king!

Look, strange women lying on their backs in ponds handing out
swords ... that's no basis for a system of government. Supreme
executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from
some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I was really looking forward to this one. Paul Giamatti is, as always, frickin' amazing but.... this story never really grabbed me. I was never totally engrossed. I don't have any suggestions as to how to improve it but, I know I didn't like it.

I do think M. Night is a great director. He really knows exactly how long a shot should last. He knows when to add music and when to have silence. I love that stuff.

This time, the flaw was the actual STORY. I couldn't really follow it and I never fully understood any of the characters motivations.

I give it a 5/10.

I really like Lady in the Water and I really believe it is an incredibly passionate and entertaining film (especially if you compare it to just about everything else that came out this year. Both Indie and Hollywood films are being paralysed by nearly unanimous stagnation.

But Hollywood does find this nutjob M. Night a problem.... and he is a problem....he has messianic meglomania and has achieved more success in a short time than anyone else...along with that is also a rampant paranoia......

Or is he just fucking with us.....

Still I loved the film and as Jezero or whatever said......the average movie audience should be enchanted ....if they ever see the film after a phalanx of critics gave muddled reviews of M. Night himself and as an afterthought the film itself.

As entertainment, I couldn't reccomend it more highly....

Personally, If M. Night asked me....I'd go out and kick some critic ass.

I always find it interesting when a movie is able to completely divide entire GROUPS of people.

Clerks II supposedly got an 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes and yet, diehard fans of that universe aren't exactly in love with it. Some are....but it's not a slam dunk.

Some people are saying that Lady In The Water is unbelievable and that people were clapping in their theater when the movie ended. Other people hated it and noticed that people were walking out before the movie was over.

I find that interesting that people who enjoy a movie can often be found in "pockets". It's as if people who live in the same neighborhood have the same mentality. Everyone HERE loved it...everyone over THERE hated it.

(BTW, an eight minute standing-O is complete and total hogwash. Eight minutes of sustained applause has never happened. I would be very surprised if it was 90 seconds. 2 minutes of sustained applause didn't occur after the Live 8 finale, or the Freddie Mercury Tribute Finale, or when Oprah gave away 200 cars, etc etc)

(BTW pt II: please attempt to stand up and applaud for 8 straight minutes before responding!!)

I saw Lady in the Water and loved it. I gave it a 12 minute "Standing O"!

M. Night dropped the "twist" and put himself in a real role in the film and hit a home run. Now that he doesn't depend on a "twist" ending* M. Night can start making some really good movies. He's a good film maker who seems to have been stuck for a few films (I loved Sixth Sense and Lady, I thought all his other movies have been crappy!)

* I don't really consider Unbreakable and Signs to have twists, they just have a reveal that adds to the events that happened before, they didn't totally change everything, Bruce was dead the whole time is a twist, the fact that they were not living in the 1800s was a twist.

I liked it. It was a nice movie and it really works if you just see it what M. Night intends it to be - a bedtime story.

Like his films or not, M. Night is a fantastic director, visually.

And I liked the jab at the critics.

I can see where people might have a problem - even with suspended belief it was a little too convienient how quickly Cleveland just accepted what was happening to him, but as the movie went on I let that pass.

I was hoping Reggie would use his monster arm as well.

But I enjoyed it. The theater did too... I didn't see anyone walk out and there was applause when it ended.

This barely belongs in this thread but, here is the link to the cannes ovation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_PZNBjB0_A&search=kevin%20smith%20cannes

They might've clapped for 8 minutes but, it wasn't in direct response to the movie. The cast and filmakers are right there in the theater, walking around, shaking hands, taking photos, waving, taking a bow etc etc.

I thought they wanted me to believe that the movie ended and people just stood up and clapped at the screen for 8 solid minutes. Impossible on every level.

I didn't know that, at Cannes, there is basically a meet-n-greet as soon as the credits roll.

My mistake.

I am eager to see this movie... I have enjoyed all of M.Knight Shamalamadingdong's films...

(even after the "TWIST" to the I See Dead People flick was ROONED for me by a mean friend)

...
I especially like the fact that this started out as a bedtime for his
kids. I admire a truly creative and visionary mind. I
think in this day and age of Instant Gratification, that these minds
are harder and harder to come by... and therefore more precious than
ever.
i just saw the movie on hbo after avoiding it because of the reviews and what people were saying about it

i dont get why everyone hated it
i mean its not the greatest movie ever

i think people were just obsessed with the sixth sence and the twist and cant handle him making a reasonably straight forward narrative

i liked it
2.8/4 pats-o's

it was just ok. the story is really simple, it pretty much is a kids story, but i might not shut it off if it's on when i'm bored. freddy rodriguez was the best part in the movie for me. his part just killed me.
