If you have any tips, tricks, hacks etc. for using an iPod or any other MP3 player, post them here. If you have any MP3 player questions, post them here.

Courtesy of the latest issue of Wired magazine.

RECOVER TUNES FROM YOUR IPOD - Some day the hard drive on your computer will crash, stranding thousands of songs on your iPod. Here's how to get them back on your PC or Mac.

1. Reinstall iTunes - Launch the app and sign into your iTuns music store account. Don't plug in your iPod yet.

2. Install and Launch a free trial of Podutil from Kennetnet Software (www.kennetnet.co.uk). The app will sit there idling, displaying a waiting-for-iPods message.

3. Plug in your iPod. Podutil will detect it and display a window that shows the files and playlists on your iPod. Click the "Choose" button at the bottom of Podutil and select your iTunes music folder. Next, click the "copy settings" button. In the dialog box that appears, select both "add tracks to iTunes" and "rebuild playlists." Click "OK".

4. Read the Don't-Steal-Music Warning in the lower right corner of Podutil. Think carefully. Click the "Copy" button below it.

5. Watch as Podutil Copies your songs, videos, playlists, and podcasts back to your computer and then loads them into iTunes. Reauthorize your iTunes music store tracks. Done!

6. Happy? Hit the "register now" button and send the site £10 (about 18 bucks).

Also, a question...

I have between 8,000 and 9,000 songs on my iPod, and using the scroll wheel to look for a particular song or artist can be particularly time consuming.
If you really want to get the most out of your ipod, go rockbox.

I have my iriver running rockbox and it is simply amazing. It is a user modifyable firmware that supports many more music formats than the standard ipod firmware. It gives you gapless playback. It allows you to use your ipod as a hard drive and frees you from having to use itunes. You get games and plugins galore. Since it is user modifyable, it is constantly being upgraded. I don't know if ipods allow for bookmarking long files (like downloaded radio shows...ahem ahem) but you can do that in rockbox (normally, iriver firmware cannot do any of these things) Since rockbox is a dual boot firmware, you still get to use the ipod firmware should the mood strike you.

Go to www.rockbox.org for more info. If you have an iRiver h100 or h300 series, you can get info from www.misticriver.net

Two of my Children have IPODs. One has the NANO (she's on her third since Christmas), the other has the Video 30GB (he's on his second since March). These things are pieces of crap! I have a stupid $80.00 Sony Network Walkman 1GB MP3 player:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5610/nwe105bluetv8.jpg
I store a bunch of R&F and O&A files on it as well as a number of music files. I've dropped it numerous times, and it still works like a charm. I might upgrade to a 2GB but other than that i'm very happy with my little player.

Does anyone know of a cheap MP3 player (only has to be about 256-512mb) that has a radio transmitter? I'm assuming that a radio transmitter is the only way to go. I like to listen to R&F and Hideout files during the weekend, in my car. My car stereo has a CD player, but not a tape player (hence I can't use a tape player adapter).

I've been burning CD's to listend, but I'm tired of running through 5-10 CD's a week. I also don't want to replace the existing stereo unit in my car.

Maybe someone can help me with this one.

I have a Shuffle that was given to me for X-mas last year. I filled it up using my gf's laptop that had the most current version of ITunes on it.

Last week I put the version of I Tunes that came with the it on my computer and reloaded the shuffle with the music I had on that computer. The problem is that I cant get the stupid thing to play now even though its showing that its full of music when I connect it to the computer.

Am I getting some kind of conflict since I am using an old version of itunes or is the thing just a piece of shit ?

here is the link to Ipod support. I just ran into the same problem with a 1 gig shuffle. My kids playlist from a previous Itunes setup, loaded then it locked up. I had to basically reset the whole thing and start over. Time consuming, but George Clinton never sounded better when it finally worked again. OOOWWwwwWe want the funk...gotta have some funk..OOOwww

I just bought the 30GB vido Ipod, my third ipod since June 2003. I
averaged a year and a half on my first two which for 400 bucks each is
unacceptable. I bought this one at best buy and bought the warranty for
an extra 60 bucks. I figure when this thing cxraps out on me in Jan 08,
Ill get a new one for free or at least for 300 off the next one

If
apple wanted to create an ipod that lasted 5 years they would, but why
should then wyhen sales for these thigns are through the roof. I wish
someone gave these guys a real run for thier money. Especially for mac
users like myself

Hello,

Just had to replace the battery on my Iriver
H320. Had it about 1 1/2 years. Cost me $80. Why can't they make a
portible player that the battery won't fuck up on ya. I called Iriver
and since it was not under warrenty, they told me to bring it to a shop
and have them fix it. Cost me $40 for the battery and $40 for the
install. I think I was robbed. It works fine for now but for how
long..FOR HOW LONG???!

If you have a Ipod or Iriver
and the battery dies and it is under warrenty, if you send it back to
them you will not get your orignal player back, they just swap it for
another one and they will not transfer your stuff. Check the serial
number.

Great you get to spend a few hundred on something
and the support sucks. If I am going to pay that much and get sucked I
want to at least finish on someone's face.

Also any way you can test a battery for the Iriver, I mean outside the player?

LAter

Mikeyboy - I have the same problem - I would see if maybe you can find an
answer in the apple forums...
And everyone else, what the hell are you doing to your ipods? I had a 10gig
second gen one that still works fine (even the battery - I guess it must be
3.5 years old now?), and I got a 60gig video one in December which I've
never had a single issue with. My sister and brother have 3rd gen ones (with
the 4 buttons) and my dad's got a clickwheel one that's working great. I
don't think any of us baby our stuff... so what the hell is wrong with you

A year and a half of daily use is about all you are going to get out of your iPod's battery. You only get so many cycles in a rechargeable battery. If your iPod dies and you do not get the file exclamation error or the sad ipod error, then you most likely have a dead battery. Instead of buying a new iPod, replace the battery with a new one (available on eBay).

Replacing a battery is easy since it plugs into a standard battery port on the board.

On first through fourth gen ipods, place the ipod face down and press on the apple logo on the back. This will cause the sides of the stainless steel case to bend and open a small gap on the sides. Take a plastic knife and wedge it into the gap and then move the knife slowly up and down the side until the case pops off. Pull out the old battery, plug in the new, and put the case back on the unit.

For those who want to customize their iPod with unique graphics like this

read this

PS-For all of those iPod haters out there, my 1st generation 5gb iPod is still going strong.

I just won an ipod nano from work but it's a 1gb version.

Question 1) What store will take an unopened ipod so I can simply upgrade to a unit that holds more than 240 songs? (I own a couple thousand fucking cds dammit.)

Question 2) State your case if I should go for some other unit at the place that allows me to upgrade. Which unit is best but not too big? The Ipod video is a little too big, I guess the 4 gb ipod nano is my best bet?

Q #3) I also have the inno but rarely use the recording function due to the constant replays so I can catch the shows at least once a day. How do I record the show in one file without it seperating each segment and commercial? Also, how many songs will it really hold itself??

Thanks for the help in advance.

I've been trying to figure out an inexpensive option for listening to my Myfi in my car without using the FM transmitter. In addition, on the weekends, I've been looking for an a way to listen to old shows (and Hideout & internet show downloads) without burning a shitload of Cd's.

I'm thinking that THIS MIGHT BE AN AFFORDABLE OPTION.

I'll be able to connect the Myfi directly to the stereo, instead of using the FM transmitter, and for the downloaded files, I can use a cheap flash drive or SD memory card.

What do you think? Is it a good way to go for 90 bucks? I've read the feedback from people who bought this unit from this seller, and they all look good.

For those looking for a nice Ipod like device I recommend the Sansa e200 series. These are a little thicker then the ipod nano but they have a memory slot and can do video too if you so please. It can record voice and radio if you so please. I am quite happy with it. I found the best price at Circuit City but other places also have them. I got a 4 gB unit for about 200 dollars.

And Dave just get a new cord if you can't get power and see if it is that first.

My iPod broke AGAIN. Third time in less than 3 years. First two times it was the battery, this time it was the hard drive. It's been a little weird sine the day I got it. Sometimes the thing would lock up when I connect it to the computer. Sometimes it would lock up in the middle of music, or when I selected a song. Every single time it was when it had to access the hard drive. It happened rarely at first, kept on happening more and more often until finally tonight the damn thing doesn't work at all. Every single time the thing has to access a song it locks up. One time when i rset the thing it wouldn't even reboot, an icon with a sad iPod came up with the address for the Apple iPod support site.

I am convinced this fucking model of the iPod is crap. It's the fourth generation click wheel model without the color screen. Everytime it broke they sent me back a replacement of the same model. It's still under an Applecare plan, but I really don't want to recieve another fucking iPod that will break on me in 6 months. Has anyone else ever gotten an upgrade when getting a replacement? If so, any tips for me? I tend to pussy out of all real life confrontations, even over the phone. I'm going to call tomorrow.

So, I bought that car stereo that I mentioned in my last post. They actually ended up sending me the VRCD500SDU MODEL instead of the the 400usb. I just installed it a few hours ago, and it ROCKS! No... it's not a high end stereo. I'm a simple man with simple needs.

I can now plug my tiny USB flash drive directly into my car stereo to listen to MP3s, and my problem of bad Myfi FM transmitter reception is solved with the aux input jack. I wasn't expecting to get better sound, since I still have the same 4 speakers that came standard in my 2000 Chevy Prizm, but this new stereo sounds WAY better than the standard GM supplied unit!

All in all, I think it was 90 bucks well spent, for someone who spends most of his music and talk radio listening time in a car.

Okay, if I follow those directions Mikey and run the application, when I connect the iPod won't iTunes automatically launch itself and effectively overwrite the songs before I can backup everything?

Reefdweller wrote:
Okay, if I follow those directions Mikey and run the application, when I connect the iPod won't iTunes automatically launch itself and effectively overwrite the songs before I can backup everything?
It shouldn't. Granted I haven't tried this method, but I do charge my ipod at work using my laptop rather than the computer that my ipod is synched with. When I plug my ipod into my laptop, I get a message telling me that the ipod isn't synched with that computer and asks me whether I would like to erase the contents of my ipod and synch it to my laptop. Obviously, I always choose no. My point is that plugging your ipod into a new computer shouldn't automatically erase your ipod, and you have to affirmatively choose to have the ipod erased and synched with a new computer.

Also, when you have the Ipod "mounted", you can click on the Ipod icon in the lower right of Itunes and turn off the automatic sync setting, which is for soccer moms and crybabies. There is a message that comes up that says you'll have to manually take the Ipod off, and you say OK.

Now you're free! You can pull stuff off of other computers, friend's computers, etc. You aren't The Man's whipping boy any more.

Well it worked. I installed iTunes and the podutil program, connected the ipod and it came right up asking me what to do. iTunes does also launch though it gave me a message asking for me to let it install some ipod software. I ignored that as I assumed doing that would probably sync it up and wipe my stuff off. The pod util program worked very easily. The only annoying thing was that every 50 songs it would pop up a reminder to buy the program and you need to click the pop up off to get it to continue. I had over 2550 songs so I had to do that a couple of times, but it was worth it. All my songs are now backed up on my external.

I'm also going to back that up to dvd tonight as well. It went pretty well. Now to rebuild my system. Joy.

Let itunes install the new ipod software. Apple releases new software from
time to time - eg the newest release now allows me to download ipod
games, do gapless playback, and vastly improved the scrolling through
artists/songs. It shouldn't erase anything.

There are some cool features to the new version of iTunes, but I'm also having a problem. I purchased a few TV shows through the iTunes store over the past year. When I installed the new iTunes software, some of those shows were erased from my ipod. They are still on my hard drive and are still playable through iTunes, but they are no longer on my ipod. Anyone know anything about this?

Man, reading these iPod problems brings back memories of my last 2 that were replaced under warranty. The things are cheap, get that extra year of replacements from Apple. It'll pay for itself on the 1st replacement.

I work in a freezer warehouse, and we arent allowed to use any kind of headphones at work, so I built a rio forge sport 512 mb with a 4 gb SD card into a headband. The whole deal cost me about 150 bucks. And I can fit like 1000 tracks onto it. I also super glued a piece of plastic over the pause button, so I can tap the back of my head to pause it if someone talks to me. It has a built in FM radio in it as well so I can keep a myfi with me and listen. Here are some pics.

Looks like a regular headband, its actually a gater (neckwarmer) folded in half with all the pieces inside.

Here you can see the Mp3 player, and two headphones that line up with my ears, and the piece of white plastic i glued on the pause button. All the stuff is velcroed in, so i can remove them and wash it. Im quite proud of my invention and the envy of my coworkers

It's just a question on changing the settings.

I am an Ipod newbie as well.

I got mine in August, and I have some tool videos I wanted on my ipod, my sisiter said to convert them so they may play on my ipod, I converted them, downloaded them onto my ipod; but they had no sound. Today I decided to plug the ipod in and do some stuff to it, I just downloaded the newer version of itunes and it said it couldnt put those files onto the ipod, but when I look at the videos in my itunes library it says they have already been converted. It has been about 2 months since I have even looked at this thing. When I cant figure something out it just frustrates me and I dont want to deal with it, thats why I guess I have only used it 2 or 3 times since I got it. I also have 2 other mp3 players I use on a daily basis that are sooo easy to use, so I guess I just stuck with them.

Maybe im just getting old. newfangled contraptions!!!!!

I have a nano and 30g video, Mine are both working great, hardly ever gave me issues, and it's unfreazing is easy to do. Zune does have some cool features, but that sharing only last for three days then you cannot use it.

Bump!
OK. Again, Ipod newbie.
The Ipod I have now is currently tied into my desktop. However, I've been considering wiping the computer and refurbishing it for Liz.
Is there a way I can disassociate my Ipod with the desktop and re-associate it with a new computer without losing what's currently on the Ipod?
I have about 5000 songs on there and I don't want to lose them.

See my first post in this thread for one method. We tried it with my brother's girlfriend's iPod, and it works well.

Go into iTunes, and De-Authorize you computer. I believe its under Store on the menu. Once you rebuild, go back into iTunes and Authorize.

I believe plugging in the iPod is unnecessary. Just do your thing in iTunes, and you should be set.

i don't know what you people are doing to your ipods!
one of my ipods is a first generation mini which works great. no battery problems or anything. and that is after my wife beat the thing up. she's dropped it at least 20 times.
My other ipod, a first generation nano works just fine. never a problem.
to get my music off of my ipods to the HD i use tinker tools for OSX.

But wait a second - if I plug my Ipod into a new computer and run itunes, won't that wipe the Ipod? I thought it could only be hooked up to one computer.

No, it can only autosync with 1 iTunes. Otherwise just set it to manual after you plug it in to any other computer.
