usps.com. Nice little site. Buy postage, check zips, track packages, etc.

My question is, why the .com? Why is it not .gov? Last time I checked the postal service was part of the federal government. Hell it is part of the major functions of the government. Deliver the mail, maintain post roads, mint money, and defend the borders.

Why .com?

they do also have usps.gov but it automatically takes you to usps.com. They most likely figured the normal person online is use to .com and not .gov

I may be misremembering this, but I think that it actually used to be ".gov", but the USPS itself decided upon the change based on several factors, not the least of which is the signification of ".com" in most "old-school" heads as a "commercial" site, where you can buy and sell things, rather than a scary government entity. I tried really hard to find this on the USPS site, but their search function, much like the letter carrier supervisor at my local delivery master-center, stinks.

Totally aside from that, you gotta figure that most people are fucking dotards anyway and will type ".com" no matter what.

I don't know if its already been said, but the USPS is actually a private company that has been given a licensed monopoly on all US metered mail, or something like that. I used to work on a contract for the post office and got to watch a super fun video on the background of the organization. But trust me, it is technically separate from the government.

Here is the wiki for it. It doesn't explicitly state that its separate from the government, but this line 'In 1971, the department was reorganized as a quasi-independent agency of the federal government and acquired its present name.' confirms what I was saying. From what I remember, its mostly regulated by the DoT.

it's easy to be profitable when you're a government-sponsered monopoly...
