I don't think i've ever felt more underwhelmed by one of his trailers.

His last few movies have been subpar at best and with the pending projects listed on IMDB he really needs to lose his hardon for DiCaprio.

the cast seems to blend enough together, from the trailer anyway

it can't gove too much away, it's a remake of a (brilliant) hong kong film, 'infernal affairs' ... it'll be interesting to see if they can pull off the cellphone sequence

i think that version of 'comfortably numb' is by van morrison (with roger waters)

I think it looks real good. I would go see it just to see all those actors in one film.

I didn't know people had Dicaprio hate he's good in everything he does all the way back to critters 3

pluss it's got mattdamon and even though the credits say marky mark is in it i don't see him in the trailer

you know this will be violent and you know the shots will look great

the
worse thing about the trailer is the lame pink flyod music but if you
put it on mute its an awesome trailer it got me excited

DiCaprio had me at Basketball Diaries.(Marky Mark too)

Hate on him all you want. He's one of the finest young american actors we have today. Leonardo fan since day 1!!

Being irish i'll see it. But it has a long way to go to get to "State of Grace" in my book.

DiCaprio, I admit hating him years ago until I saw him in Romeo and Juliet, Gangs of New York and Catch Me if You Can, he really impressed me in those movies and I've liked him since. He was brilliant in The Aviator.

Apparently you all need your eyes checked because I never said DiCaprio OR the last few movies Scorsese made sucked or were made horribly.

Personally, i LIKED GONY when i first saw it but after watching it a few times it became less tolerable despite the great performance by Day-Lewis. If you sit there and even try to pretend their shitty accents didn't irritate you you're lying to your soul.

The guy knows what he's doing but every now and then his movies are letdowns.
I'm not gonna pretend that I won't see this new movie but, I think it's about time Scorcese did a movie that was outside of his comfort zone.

These ensemble-cast-in-the-underworld movies are a bit too predictable at this point. Right down to the super slow-mo car bomb.

I saw this this afternoon. Really good. Very very good. Nicholson, Damon and DiCaprio were all great with DiCaprio the best of the bunch. Alec Baldwin was good too in a different kind of way. I thought the huge cast would be distracting but they were all on their game so I didn't notice. The only thing I disliked was that it felt a little too long. Towards the end I felt some scenes dragged on too long.

And I heard more of that Van Morrison/Roger Waters version of Comfortably Numb. I stand by my opinion. Fucking awful.

It's decent...but the movie it's based on, Infernal Affairs, is a zillion times cooler and, well, better. I know it's the movie snob thing to say, but the original was so much more raw and kinetic and mind-blowingly awesome. Scorsese is just too reserved these days...I think he's getting too old for these type of films.

I thought this was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The acting was great all around, with stellar performances from Nicholson, Baldwin, Marky Mark, and Damon. Even Leo was good, although I can't stand his acting and his phony phony accents (did anyone catch the preview for a Blood Diamond - his accent sounds almost comical in that).

I thought the movie had a lot of suspense and some pretty shocking moments. And I disagree with an earlier comment, the movie was over 2 1/2 hours long but it went by very quickly.

Best Scorcese movie since Goodfellas.

I really liked The Departed.

I also got the box set of Infernal Affairs I, II, and III, the movie that The Departed was a remake of. (wow. bad grammar.)

I don't know which I liked more. Infernal Affairs solved the plot holes of The Departed and it got rid of the romantic sharing the same girl subplot that I didn't like.

The main difference I think was the Matt Damon / Andy Lau character. In TD he was selfish, insecure, and he killed Costello because he thought Costello would dime him out. In IA he was more complex and wanted to turn straight and just be a good cop. He killed Sam to protect his identity so he could stay a policeman.

I hope more people see Infernal Affairs to spark discussion. FRED needs to watch it.

I got the IA boxset, too, and loved it. TD is a good flick, but the IA trilogy is all class. TD tried to cram too many parts from IA 1 and 2 into one film and something was lost. I also liked the mob boss in the Hong Kong version better...Nicholson was entertaining and kinda scary, but that's only gonna go so far until the badasses working for you say, "OK, fucking this asshole. He's a prick and I'm sick of his shit." The boss in IA has a menacing side, but you can also see why people like him and work for him, or feel some guilt about secretly trying tot ake down his operation. And while I love Scorsese, I think the IA films look much better. Very classy and "noir-ish."

Oh, and Martin Sheen can't possibly compare to the top cop in IA. If anyone has ever seen the Hong Kong classic Hard Boiled, it's the same guy who plays the chief inspector in that film. Again, like the IA mob boss, you can understand so much more why he generate such strong feelings in the people working for and against him. And he and the mob boss just seem so much smarter than their American versions.

Tony Leung is one of the best actors of all time. DiCaprio is good, but he can't hold a candle to Tony.

But everything else you said is absolutely true.
I love how in IA they set up the Boss in a believable way by making him think that Keung was the mole and that is why he had to go to the warehouse. TD didn't really do as well of a job setting up Costello's death.

Leung is great. There is a lot of his Alan character from Hard Boiled in his Yan character.

In a way a TD/IA comparison is similar to a Abre Los Ojos/Vanilla Sky discussion. The best thing about the remake is the 'Americanization' to appeal to a Stateside audience. I.e., the lines about 'in our next life when we are cats' and the soundtracks. But, taking out some of the snappy dialogue and the soundtrack, where else did all the millions go?

That's right, he was Johnny Wong in HB. Damn...I knew he was in it, I guess I just remembered him as a cop because of IA.

After months of avoiding any The Departed talk, I finally saw this and thought it was great. That ending was shocking! I'm really glad that wasn't spoiled for me.

I bought the two disc DVD set, which comes with an awesome documentary "Scorsese on Scorsese", which is worth the price of the set alone. It's basically Scorsese talking about his growing up and then he talks about all his films, with clips included.

I saw this film, finally, over the weekend and liked it a lot. Jack was Jack, of course; Matt Damon was very good; Alec Baldwin showed his trademark smaller role brilliance (see also Glengarry Glenross and The Cooler); and DiCaprio showed, once again, that he is so much more than just a pretty face. What caught me off guard was how much humor was in the movie. This film had a lot more laugh out loud moments than Scorsese's usual fair. There's always some laughs in his films, Jimmy Conway choking Morrie for example, but this had some really, really clever moments in it. I found Mark Wahlberg's character to be just a little too over the top to be believable. That's was really my only major complaint. It stepped into the realm of the ridiculous a little. The other (minor) problem I had was the ending. ** I would have been much more satisfied if it had just ended with a cop shooting DiCaprio, maybe even Anthony Anderson's character. Seriously, how fucked up would it have been with Dicaprio dead, and Damon just continuing on, sliding into the life of a Special Unit Statey? ** I dunno, what do I know? Wait, how many Oscar does Scorsese have? Hmmmm, that's the same number as me, maybe he should listen to me next time.

I saw it last night and enjoyed it. I dont think it was Oscar-worth in a manner like Silence of the Lambs but it was very good.

I liked DiCapprio a lot and he played a good character.

Nicholson was too over-the-top for me and kinda distracted me from the other characters.

As far as the character he seemed a little too small time to be as bad as he acted.

Why wouldnt he have felt some retribution from the Italians ?

His " empire " didnt seem to be that big.

I hope by this point anybody reading this has seen the movie but I didnt like the **** SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER **** killing of Martin Sheen's character. Unbelieveable. You think that if an criminal killed a Captain in the State Police or any police officer for that matter that there wouldnt be a wholesale crackdown on every criminal enterprise ? They'd pressure the criminals to take action themselves until somebody had paid for the crime. Plus the one undercover cop would've had to have blown his cover once that happened. No way his cover was worth the death of an officer.

The end had a few twists which I didnt see coming and enjoyed.

Did anybody notice that when Damon comes out of the elevator heading to his apartment that the neighbors seemed to shy away from him ? Like the lasy with the dog just gave hime a look. I thought that'd play more into what happened when he went into the apartment. No once in there wahlberg was acting solely out of revenge for Sheen & Dicapprio right ? There wasn;t supposed to be any hint that he was " bad " was there ?

Incidentally the movie may be based on an Asian movie but some of it seems to have come from a true life story about an irish mob guy in Boston ( Whitey Bulger ) that was being protected, while still commiting crimes, by an FBI agent. The FBI guy blew all kinds of covers of state police, local, DEA agents.

Here's a few links to info on that story :

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Mass-Unholy-Alliance-Between/dp/0060959258

http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/mob_bosses/james_whitey_bulger/index.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitey_Bulger
