View Full Version : Shot putting babies

Ron thinks he can shot put a baby 25 yards. Earl said 40.

Do you think they can make it?

And how far do you think you can shot put a baby?

(And yes, I know about the other thread, but it turned into a tooling thread because it was poorly spelled and really vague, so that one is for tooling, this one is for discussing shot putting babies.)

So in which thread do I put my golf putting babies comment?

Shot putting or hammer throwing??? There's a huge difference. I don't think I can shot put a baby (weighing about 11 lbs.) more than 35-40 feet. However, I think I could probably hammer throw one 40 yards or more. The weight just helps build momentum.

There's also holding the baby by the torso and using the discus method. I think I could do about 20-25 yards that way.

I've got a bum shoulder. But, I think I could place kick a baby about 40 yards.

I want to know how far you could hurl a baby with one of THIS THINGS...

evedder's numbers look pretty close to the mark, But I bet I could get 5 to 10 feet more with the hammer method Lots of momentum and that over-sized baby head..

I threw the shotput and discus in high school and I think some of you are going a little lofty with expectations of throwing a 12-15 lb baby 40 feet. At the high school level, good, in shape shotput throwers would throw a 16 lb shot just upwards of 50 ft. With a shotput, you have all the weight in a very dense package that is easier to toss. A baby is much less dense and won't stay balled up, posing problems when attempting to hurl the lil thing. I'm thinking 25-30 feet on a good day.

The hammer toss, now, is a whole different ballgame.

Nice pic of the Trebuchet, Funkman. Those thing cand throw a piano 100 yards.

I looked up the world records for shot put and hammer throw, both of those are 16 pounds, so if ya had a baby that weight:

Wikipedia has the mens world record for shot put at about 75 feet, or 25 yards. So a shot style Baby throw will probably not launch a toddler that far. I think Earl said something about 40 yards, and Ron said 25 I think, not sure if that was a baby throw distance, or baby shot put.

The mens world record for hammer throw is about 285 feet, or 95 yards. But that would involve attaching a steel wire to a handle and then the baby, and again, world class technique in Baby ballistics.

I'm ignoring the mentioned air resiatance of flailing limbs. My prediction for both shot and hammer throw style baby throws would be a Baby launch angle of a bit under 45 degrees, compensating for height of Baby thrower.

I wonder if we could stuff a baby down a potato cannon type thing...

I don't think I could go more then 30 feet with a shot put of the baby, but with enough engineering I may be able to make it survive the toss or even a drop from a 5 story building.
But with a little junk hanging down, you might be able to train the
baby to use it as a sort of rudder so it can fly straight and narrow.
you're all nuts. I don't think anyone can shot put a baby more than 15 feet. A baby isn't aerodynamic at all, plus its heavier at one end so the flight will be wobbily.
