I watch either one whenever it comes on, and there isn't something else really good on. I don't think I could pick a favorite between the two.

Yes, they've both been on cable recently and I'm stuck in front of the tv when either of them is watching.

I think they're the best submarine movies of the 90's (since Das Boot for that matter) but I just wanted to get a feel on what others think.

Right now... I'm going with Crimson Tide. I've been feeling more tension in the acting and there are just so many great performances in the film. Gandolfini has never been slimier. Hackman and Washington are just so good. Lipizzan horses.

Hackman and Washington are just so good.

The scene where Hackman hits Denzel on the bridge is incredible.

Scott Glen as Bart Mancuso is the best movie ship captain of all time.

I gotta go with the hunt for red october. I think the story was alot more entertaining. Plus it has the phrase "Scuttle the ship" in it. That bumps it up a bunch for me.

I prefer Crimson Tide. Having served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Fleet for 8 yrs., Crimson Tide is closer to the real thing.

My vote is for Red October. Far and away.

I was just watching The Siege, and Denzel gave Bruce Willis the same exact speech that he gave Hackman in Crimson Tide...to the effect of, "youve really fucked things up while in command "sir" and if you dont stand down you WILL be arrested! blah blah blah".....hack, man.

So if you wanna compare October to Tide because they both have submarines in 'em.......why not include these movies as well?

-Operation Petticoat

-Under Siege

OR, navy films....I think Mr Roberts would have them all beat. You wanna talk tension between characters? Nothing beats Henry Fonda vs James Cagney.

(trivia---what did Cagney's character have in common with Hackman's character in relation to how they felt toward their respective antagonists? Hint--there was something their underlings had that they did not)

Montana."

As for your trivia question... I don't know! What?

Red October is the better overall movie, but I do agree Crimson Tide was well put together.

Ambassador Andrei Lysenko: There is another matter... one I'm reluctant to...
Dr. Jeffrey Pelt: Please.
Ambassador Andrei Lysenko: One of our submarines, an Alfa, was last reported in the area of the Grand Banks. We have not heard from her for some time.
Dr. Jeffrey Pelt: Andrei, you've lost another submarine?
