Gary was always my favorite.

Sad news. I can remember all the busting Gary took for his dad being an "ice cream man" and how it would infuriate him. It always seemed like he had a ton of love and respect for his parents and Gary always seemed like a pretty regular guy. I hope his father's passing is treated with compassion and respect by everyone, including certain pesky fans of Howard's enemies.

On a side note, I've got fond memories of the Stern show and was a big fan up until Jackie left. Artie never grew on me or seemed particularly funny. He also had an incredible knack for talking over everyone and never seemed to grasp the concept of "3rd mic."

Like the rest of you, I'm also sorry to hear this bad news. I hope Gary is doing well under the circumstances. My neighbor has Sirius Radio, and after talikng to him tonight he had no idea this had even happened.
When Don Geronimo's wife was killed, I felt bad because it was a untimely loss. If I felt bad for every old person that passed away naturally, I would lose my mind. I've never met Boy Gary, let alone his father. When my family is gone, I doubt a producer of a radio show that doesn't know them will give a shit.

o&a were talking about it this morning, and it's on wackback. beth hurt her foot, so howard "couldn't" go to the wake or the funeral. he paid for the catering, though, cuz he's a swell guy.

I don't think Beths injury is the real reason.

I suspect that Howard isn't going because, if he DOES attend, the event will be about HIM. He can console (sp?) Gary at another time. And Stern was not best friends with thte guy who died. Also, when they were asking Spade how did he feel when Farley died, what they really meant was "how do you feel knowing you movie career is completely dead now that this fat mess is no longer around to carry your unfunny ass?"

Stern is just a selfish prick. Or at the very least, it's noticeable.

I don't understand your comment. I was saying that a person should support their friend and colleague no matter what, public and press be damned. There are ways to subvert the paparazzi and press scrutiny if necessary, but there is also not likely to be as much attention brought to bear because Gary's dad is not a celebrity in his own right.

The only caveat to "always support your friend" would be if said friend specifically asked you not to come in order to avoid some perceived trouble or discord. If Gary asked Howard not to attend because his presence and the possible "hullabaloo" it might entail would be distracting to the family, then its a completely different issue. That's what I meant by "we will probably never know;" if Howard is a class act he wouldn't reveal that Gary asked him not to attend and would make up an excuse. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, although I don't think that is the case.

EDIT: Also, I agree that it is news because Howard didn't go to the funeral. I don't believe it would be as newsworthy if Howard did attend because everybody expected him to. His absence is the news that is creating the furor - if he had attended it wouldn't be that big a deal.

Well said Madd Matt, it is many of the sentiments that I was going to express. Especially the part about always supporting your friends no matter what. If the press makes a lil furor about you being there, so fucking what?? You still go in support of a long time co-worker. No matter what the fuck your status may be.

Hey Matt.

I really do agree with most of what you're saying. A friend SHOULD be there. Hell....a friendly acquaintance shold be there. No doubt about it.

I'm just saying, I give Howard enough credit -as a human being- to know that he is SUPPOSED to be at the funeral. I also would like to think that he knows that Beths twisted ankle isn't really an excuse to not go. It's just too lame. In other words; I truly believe that SOMETHING else was going on behind the scenes. There has to be some explanation as to why Howard wouldn't go to this important event in his friend/coworkers life.

I honestly don't believe that Howard "just didn't feel like going". That's unbelievable to me. I also don't believe that his manager, agent, girlfriend, parents, and co-workers would "allow" him to just not go. There would be some peer pressure there.

So, I assumed that it was a situation similar to the Spade/Farley thing. Ya know....to let the focus be on what it's supposed to be on.

The ONLY reason I even know about Spades reasons for blowing off that Farley funeral is because he used to talk about it on Howards show, and Howard agreed with Spade VERY MUCH.

I'm sure Howie will go into full-on Spin cycle when he goes back to air. I seriously haven't listened to him in ages but, I expect that he will address this "controversy". That's kinda what he's known for.

Does anyone (besides Howard Stern, of course) really believe that if Howard dares to show his face anywhere it will turn into a full force media blitz?

I seriously doubt that a C list celebrity like Stern would turn an event as solemn as a funeral into a circus.

Stern is turning into a fascinating case study of someone with delusions of grandeur. I only hope he finds some solace and joy in his perceived greatness.

It is also very valid and makes sense. To be fair, I haven't listened to his show in more than 10 years so you have more insight into the Spade issue than I do.

However, I also think that if Howard believes his presence would have been too distracting it is the height of hubris. By not attending he is bringing about more negative attention than by attending. Gary is going to have to fend off questions like "are you disappointed that Howard didn't come" or "how will this affect your working relationship" for the next several weeks (at least until shortly after the show is live again). Instead of moving on the loss will be smacking him in the face for a prolonged period.

EDIT: Wow, GVAC did a better job of explaining it than I did. Thanks!
