On the news a few days ago they mentioned a new automat opening up in NYC, the first one in many many years. Thing is I can't find anything out about it anywhere. Does anyone have any info on this place? I want to go check it out in a few weeks. I think it's called Robo something or another.

An automat was a form of a cafeteria-style restaurant
in which simple foods, usually coffee, sandwiches, and other fare such
as macaroni and cheese, were served to the clientele by means of
coin-operated vending machines. The diner inserted the required number
of coins and then slid open a window to remove his meal, which was
generally wrapped in waxed paper. ...

one step closer to the Foodarackacycle.

Didn't Elmer Fudd work at an autumat and throw pie in Humphrey Bogart's face? I'm probably wrong but I remember an automat somewhere in a Bugs episode. I remember my dad telling me about an automat called Horn and Hardart (sp?) in NYC back in the day.
There was a sushi bar in the 90's on Fifth ave that had a conveyor belt...you sat on a barstool-like chair and the food would float past on a belt...you'd pick the dishes you wanted and paid by the plate....my wife loved this place....and the food was FRESH,,,you watched the sushi chef prepare the meal and place it on the belt!!!!!

If you live in NYC, where you can get some of the best food in the world...why would you go to a place where your food comes from a vending machine ?

Did you learn nothing at all from that Food Channel guy last week ?

I passed it by the other day; it's in the east village. I was expecting something more American 50's retro, but it's actually pretty Japanese-pop looking. The interior is all plastic pink. I definitely want to try it though just to see what it's all about.

I give them 6 months. Too cold, robotic and impersonal. I've never thought of a vending machine as something that will give me a decent meal.

I just got back from the press event opening party. Got a chance to try everything out on the menu, it was quite a nifty little place and looks like it might be someplace fun to go at the end of the night, being that it's open 24 hours.

Full review, part 1, with pictures.

The founders are really nice guys and I wish them all the luck in this little project of theirs.

In case you have no interest in this subject here are some girls to at least make this thread a little less waste of your time

There was one in Times Square and one downtown around 6th street since the 1930's I believe. We used to go there for a sandwich or pie after hitting a club in the 70's and early 80's. I think they closed in the mid 80's sometime. We were very sad when it went. I think it's a very cool idea for the modern era.
