as i have told many of you i am looking into moving to Charlotte after our wedding in the fall. i am also thinking of changing my career. i want to be my own boss, i am sick of my hard work paying off for other people.

what i am thinking of doing is buying a snapple route or a bread route, etc.

any opinions?

I'm not sure about Snapple, because I have always considered it sort of a fad drink, but a bread route seems pretty stable.

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

You could stand to make a lot of DOUGH!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry - couldn't resist.
I'm in sales and I can tell you it's a whole lot more stressful than some people might imagine, but it definitely has its perks, too. Being on the road all day can get pretty damn aggrivating, especially with the drivers in the NY/NJ area. I'm sure the people in Charlotte will piss you off just as much, but maybe traffic won't be as awful. On the plus side, there's no boss on your back and you can make your own schedule.

If you think it's something you'd like to try, you'd be a lot better off seeing what's available working as a sales rep for a company before you go and make the investment of a route. If you discover you absolutely despise sales and being on the road all day you'll be stuck with a huge debt if you purchase a route.

Most companies offer a pretty fair amount of freedom for their reps. At my job if I see my boss once a month it's a lot. As long as my numbers keep rolling in there's really no need for him to speak to me. I handle all my accounts, collect all the money, and keep the customers happy. I treat it exactly like it's my own business, but the best thing is that I'm not shelling out any money for the product, I drive a company truck, they pay the gas and tolls, etc. You'll be liable for all of that if you buy into a route.

A buddy of mine got into a Snyder chips route and has been doing it for years. I don't know how much he makes, but he's got a damn nice truck now. That reminds me. I'm out of chips. I gotta call him and have him hook me up.

gvac, your opinion to me means alot because of your experience. traffice wouldnt bother me. the thought of doing something that have control over and the freedom to work as hard as i want for myself means alot to me.

On a serious note...

GVAC makes some really valid points. I was in a similar situation with my last job, doing coordination work for a corporate PR department. I took a lower-rung job to try things out and ended up hating the straight-up corporate world. That experience helped push me back into the tech sector and gave me the impetus to find a job I really love.

Especially starting out in a new location, it might be best to get your feet wet first and get a feel for the situation/area. Charlotte is a beautiful city that is rapidly growing (my brother used to live there and did corporate consulting), so there should be continued avenues for opportunity - especially in service type industries.

My suggestion would be to try things out first, but I'm also a "play it safe" guy regarding matters that have financial implications.

Editing to bump the thread back up - This is an important matter for Stugots, so it deserves more attention

What kind of sales do you do? I was think pharmasutical (SP?) but then you said you collect money and then I went blank.

very funny BoBo.

Gvac is in crystal meth sales. thats common knowledge.

this career move and relocate is not set in stone. so far i have applied to 50 jobs and not even one phone call. i will be tinkering with my resume and cover letter this week. as for the career change, it might be something that is done down the line, only because i think if we move i should get a feel for things once we are settled. the one thing that holds me back for doing is that i am really good at my job. i hate it at times and others i love it, but like i said i am damn good at it.

Good luck! Definitely go for it, if it is something you think you'll like. Then again, you'll never know unless you try.

I'm in the middle of changing careers right now. I'm studying to become a massage therapist and have another year to go, but this is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Have Reefy massage the back of your lower head, in between the nuchal lines (where your skull meets the spine, you can feel kinda two lines, bumps...that space in between). there are muscles there that attache right into your skull, and can attribute to headaches (migranes). Have him rub that area for a little bit...it helps me!

Just be careful when choosing that new career, Stugots. It wasn't all that long ago that Reeshy was proclaiming how happy he was that he changed careers and became a nurse.
