I've tried several times in the last few months to quit smoking cigarettes. This time I decided to quit smoking everything for a while, mainly to see how clear I can get my lungs (I want to be able to sing again). The other day I noticed that after I toked up I wanted a cigarette, so I was thinking maybe one of the keys for me in quitting this time around would be to cool it on that also.

I'm on day 3 today, started with the 14mg patch on Monday. Hanging on so far, but the cravings are getting to me. I've read things about how to quit, listened to the cd that came with the patches, but this time around the only thing I feel like doing is playing around on the internet all the time for distraction as last time around when I tried to quit I felt like I was eating too much. That was a long sentance.

Tuesday on the way into my workplace I had a nasty trigger (I said trigger!) because some people were out in front of the building smoking, when we have a perfectly fine smoking area on the side of the building. Plus I work for a healthcare company, so it looks kinda bad when clients visit and stuff. I got pissed off and talked to my boss about it and I hope an email goes out. I kinda felt like a narc...

Was just wondering if any of you have any special suggestions to get through?

In Canada they put crazy yucky pictures on packs of Cigarettes and include a little paper on how to quit. I think they should do that here too...

'they' say that the one thing worse then a non-smoker is an ex-smoker. I say, go to your hole and smoke fuckers!

Hey can i bum a smoke?

The longest I've ever made it without a smoke was the eight weeks of boot camp. That was easy though, because I didn't even see a cigarette the whole time. I smoked a whole pack my first day out, though.

hang in there budday, hopefully as time goes by it gets easier. just take it day by day, stay mentally strong and take confidence in knowing you're stronger than the cigarette

I tried to quit for years. Finally my doc said "You quit or you die!" I decided to quit after 25 years. He gave me Zyban to help. It worked wonders! Talk to your doctor. I'm not a guy who's into pills to fix my ills but this one worked like a charm (and you only take it for a few months). Don't give up. The main thing is that you must really want to stop or nothing will work. When my doctor used the word 'death' I finally took the matter seriously.
Friend of a friend quit recently - she's using dumdums. She goes through a lot of them. She stayed with the friend over a weekend, and went through more than a whole bag, but I guess it takes care of the oral fixation part.

From how it was explained to me, basically, everytime you feel like having a cigarette, you have a dumdum instead, and it helps a little. I imagine that's why the girl in question went through so many dumdums, but they're small anyway.

I'm just glad I never started smoking. I have a really bad oral fixation as it is.

I've been smoking since I was 13 (christ half my life now) and I've gotten myself to the point where I don't smoke in the house anymore. I work from home, so I'm down from a pack a day to a pack a week, or a week and a half.

I don't think I'll ever be able to quit social smoking. I HAVE to have a cigarette after a drink.

I'm hoping to eventually just smoke less and less. This is the least I've ever smoked in my life. I don't think I could quit cold turkey.

My Unlce is a Dr and I was talking to his wife, My Aunt the other day and she told me there is a new pill out that works. She also said that there is a laser theropy thing. Were they put the laser thing in your inner ear and it stops you from smoking. I have also heard about hypnosis.

Anyone used or heard of any of these treatments? If so please tell me what yopu think about them and if they worked?

The first time I quit was because I found out I was 3 months pregnant. Doesn't work for everyone, but worked for me.

Started smoking again when kid was about 6 months old. Stress.

Quit
the second time after hubby called after being in Dallas for a week,
and said that he hadn't had a smoke since he got there. He said
he felt good about it, and was hoping not to pick it up again. I
finished my pack that night, and just refused to go and buy any
more. By the time he had returned a week later, all physical
cravings were gone. Used dum-dums for the oral fixations, food
for the cravings, and started going to the gym.

Been 3 years.

Still would kill for one though. Don't know if that will ever go away.....

like bobo, I quit 40 or 50 times...

there's no one solution obviously...dums dums and patches (i really don't know what a dum dum is...candy?)

my solution was to just keep quitting and then when I'd smoke again, I just tried to not feel bad about it...

if you can let go of all the emotional stuff like: "I'm a bad person for smoking" or "I suck cause I can't control myself", you'll get a little closer.

like Mr. Beckett said Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. (fail better by not beating yourself up about failing)

so if you light up again...just enjoy it...then quit again some day...

sounds like a crap method...maybe it is...worked for me...

good luck buddy...maybe you should start singing more?

Thanks for all the tips buddays. Day 4 is almost over! I'm still using the patch and distraction method and it seems to be doing the trick. It really seems like there is no magic bullet for this, and different things work for different folks...

The fail better method seems like I've been doing that without putting a name on it I learned a while ago that the best thing I can do to myself if I'm trying to change a behavior pattern and not getting it right is to not feel guilty about it.

As they say in "programs", one day at a time!!

fa fa fa fa, one day at a time fa fa fa fa...

edit worst/best

I had been smoking off & on for about 7 1/2-8 years and I'm only 21. Everyone in my house smoked so naturally i was either going to detest the habit or pick it up...unfortunately it was the latter.

I basically just stopped, cold turkey. I tried to ween myself off, didnt work. I tried only smoking socially, didnt work either. I would smoke when drinking and even that would be pretty much an entire pack to the night.

Finally it was just an issue of it being too expensive. I'm highly uncomfortable with the fact that money i am working for is going towards such a useless habit when i could be saving it or treating myself to other things that i find 100% more enjoyable.

My clothes don't smell, i don't get pissy when i go over an hour without having one and my chances of getting Cancer have just decreased about 10%.

As dumb as this sounds - I quit a pack-a-day habit nearly three years ago by approaching it as if I was breaking up with a girlfriend who I was crazy about but I knew was bad for me. Ignore those voices in your head- you will be happier as a non-smoker. And drink a glass (or bottle) of water when you get the urge.

I quit smoking and started using snuff. Talk about an awful habit. Try waking up at 3:00 am in front of the TV with a dip of snuff in your mouth and your throat burning like hell. Then gave up the snuff and went to gum. The tougest part of the whole deal was work. It seemed that without the nails or snuff the day took FOREVER to pass. I haven't had a smoke or dip of snuff in 4 years but it was really tough in the beginning.

And I still crave the nails. One thing that helps? I don't know what you're paying for a pack of smokes where you live but around here they're $4.50+ a pack. Do the math. That has been a motivation to me not to restart. I got better things to do with my $ than slowly poisoning myself.

Dip is just bad. I used it back in high school when I wrestled. Everyone who needed to lose weight dipped, I didnt need to lose weight but tried it and didnt care for it. Now I need to stop smoking. Its tough to break a 17 year habit.
